MonsterZeroAlien: Covenant ForumRidley Scott blames the diminishing returns of AC on the "Alien" itself

So we remove the AI antagonist from the next movie.

Back to a Bishop like 'hero'.(Walter or whoever, a female synth maybe)

Make the bad guy human...maybe someone onboard the Covenant in cryo sleep.

This human character kills some crew a real psycho. A human version of David.

The end of the movie a Xeno kills the bad guy(the audience hates the guy and wants the xeno to 'get him')..The xeno becomes the hero....a happy ending.

IF David was human would we be having this discussion? Would everyone be freaked out by a human doing what David has done?

Lawrence of Arabia Who knows. I think Disney will try to protect somewhat the profile of 20th Century Fox. After all it is one of the studios with most history in Hollywood. However, they will be after the money for sure.

They'll rehash Aliens over and over, make Ripley a Disney Princess, not take any risks, and throw in plenty of jokes for good measure.

Yes. It's possible that it is similar to an action figure, you can play with it, open the chest, etc. :) - as the images with the girls show it.

Scary!

And just how sentient is MUTHUR? It must know something is happening!?! A monster running around killing crew...Quarantine protocol broken. Suppose David has shut her down to a degree...

Or are all the AI in cahoots and keeping secrets from humans?

Even Walter or Bishop(Ash obviously)could shield humans 'for their own safety'.

MUTHUR "Our probes report nothing of importance on LV223....Seems the Prometheus suffered a catastrophic anti-grav failure...All hands lost"

Weyland Corp "Thank you for the report. Case Closed"

MUTHUR "We have yet to find much of anything from our advanced probes....By the way, how is your golf game?"

Weyland Corp "Haven't played much this year! Again, thanks. Please keep us informed if your scans reveal anything of importance"

Yep, Giger's first attempt at chestburster. He was inspired by Francis Bacon's Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion c.1944

The AC one's head looks like that of a pterodactyl, has elongated limbs and its chest resembles Engineer's pressure suit a bit.

Looking at that image you shared Ati, in the film it looks like its chest is wide opened but in these Instagram images, it looks intact. Weird.

For a moment it reminded me of a monkey thing from Prometheus fire and stone

Well, it was with the cargo hold full of urns with pathogen that the engineer on LV-223 tried to set off to Earth to wipe out the human race. It was with this pathogen that David wiped out the engineer civilisation (and all fauna) on Planet 4. So it is clearly a bio-weapon of mass destruction.

So, apparently, you can both destroy and create with the pathogen - beings like the deacon, the neomorph, the xenomorph etc? Both Ash and David seem to label the xenomorph as "The perfect organism. Its structural perfection is matched only by its hostility . . . A survivor... unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality." But would it be easy to control? :)

Yes, its head is covered by its body in the movie:

But the AC version has a different head, no doubt.

Im DurpAlien: Covenant ForumSomeone on this forum inadvertently predicted that Disney might buy Fox. What does this mean for the Alien Series?

Well just using other examples it's likely any nonmovie material for Alien becomes noncanon, if it already isn't and will get started over. They also tend to go with the large crowd and focus on what is liked rather than controversial, so if they did pursue an Alien movie it would likely be the general idea we got of 5, because the general consensus is that after the first two movies the movie quality dropped and 5 seemed like it heavily connected to the good movies.

O they just don't touch the alien series because it doesn't seem to be the safest franchise at the moment.

H.R.Giger's original chestburster design. Cool that Ridley includes little easter eggs into canon.

That is interesting that the bio-weapon was the pathogen and not the Alien/Xeno. What if the goo was not the original form but rather the Engineers found that pathogen, developed it to the goo and made the Xeno out of the goo because since the goo was better it was way more chaotic and could easier (in their mind) get out of control while also being deadlier and that the Xeno versions could more easily be controlled, or so they thought. I am not saying that this is the case it is just something that occurred to me.

Perhaps the perfect organism is the goo or what the goo is made of and not the Xeno since it can take so many forms and maybe it will be more lethal. This far I have thought about the Xeno as being the perfect organism (like Ash said) what if Ash wasn't aware of the goo but that it is more deadlier (more perfect) than the Xeno? It could be that Ash was wrong.

I hope that they will keep the origin of the goo a secret.

Maybe my reply seems confusing and not very structured but my point is that we (by being told this by Ash) might have been wrong about the Xeno being the perfect organism, maybe the goo is that in a way or what it is made of since it is deadlier. I don't buy what David says about it either that it is a form of AI since he is full of his thoughts about AI and androids ruling the world.

MonsterZero: Yes, the engineers were perhaps the only travellers in space (until the humans showed up)? They would therefore not need to hide the facilities - just isolate them from their homeworld(s) in case something went wrong (which it did)?

BigDave: Many interesting possibilities. Yes, there seem to be 4 or 5 facilities (at least) on LV-223. As I see it, the bio-weapon wasn’t the xeno (or deacon) it was the pathogen itself. There must be plenty of it left for David to pick up? I wonder how they created it? We saw no labs in Prometheus, just the product (the pathogen). As you point out, they might have had eons of time to develop this product, unless LV-223 was a totally different planet 35.000 years ago (perhaps a paradise)?

You suggest that LV-223 was a watch-house and that they experimented on humans and other species of earthly life? Like David did (only the engineers had eons of time)? I think that LV-223 might have been a paradise once, maybe in a friendly way seeding planets and evolving humans, animals and plants, but as time went by they became destructive, creating this weapon of mass destruction and ruining LV-223 (into a barren wasteland)?

Doubt that will happen, but Disney might either bring it back or royally screw it up. I want Alien 5 though as a Force Awakens style movie.

id say a character is half writing and half actor who brings the character to life. it might just be me but I felt the awful accent Rapace used was the characters biggest downfall. I liked the idea of the character as it was original in the franchise. id have switched Theron and Rapace personally and u would have gotten 2 completely different outcomes imo.

daniels was just boring for me. not an original character and wasn't portrayed well. just a member of the crew for me who couldv gone early on or later in the film and it wouldn't have mattered. Tennessee was a much better character

LMAO! Ho ho ho! Thanks ali81, that was fun as hell.

Yeah I would also rather have a movie about the Engineers and their connection to the Xeno rather than a AC 2.

Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumDaniels V Shaw (Lead role meat-grinder)

Shaw was a religious, stubborn, and indoctrinated without much of common sense. Even when a lot spoke against her beliefs she still with a fanatical outlook held on to it. I didn't like the character a bit. She deserved the way she ended up, it made me happy because of the way that she was. When a character is made up in a way that doesn't make you have much sympathy for it then something is seriously wrong because it seems to me that they tried to make her a somewhat sympathetic character or at least someone with many likable sides. A fact that made her worse was that she was the lead of the movie, yuck.

Judging from the end of AC Daniels will probably either end up totally dead or a test subject of David.

Daniels was too anonymous for me and didn't have very distinctive personality traits but at least she wasn't naive and dumb as Shaw. I would take Daniels over Shaw any day. As far as being a Ripley clone she was more like Ripley compared to Shaw but I think that they made a mistake by making her a bit more Ripley-like. It was almost like they thought that it needed to have some sort of Ripley if only a Ripley-lite to make a movie, I think that was a mistake. Daniels was alright but she could have been written a lot better, as could most of the characters.

I wouldn't mind if they have a new lead-character in the next movie but maybe that would be too much like repeating Prometheus to AC. Develop Daniels and add some more personality traits something that we didn't see in AC or make a new lead.

As Big Dave said: the problem wasn't Rappace, the problem was the character.

A lack of Ripley clues hasn't been a bit of a problem this far in the prequels, there are other issues that are more important to why the prequels have failed this far.

i def think a film that delves into the backstory of the engineers and their connection with the xeno has huge potential, more so id say than a synthetic Gengis Khan in space

Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumAs Ridley Scott continues to deny his creation, a poll reaches its tipping point

Focusing on androids is boring so they get what they deserve. I think that the path that the franchise is taking now is just bad (AC and to a lesser degree Prometheus).

They believed that Prometheus lacked Xenos and that it was the big problem. It seems to me that they were wrong. It lacked well done human characters something which unfortunately undoes many of the interesting things in both AC and Prometheus.

Sorry Scrib but I would rather watch Aliens than AC, it has more interesting characters and is not a AI crap fest.

Prometheus had too little of the Alien and too many bad characters. AC had the beast and still too many under-developed characters. They both had problems in common and things that were different but still bad. Two problems with AC is that it had too many slow parts and too much AI crap.

Having things about the Engineers could be interesting but they were never done too well in Prometheus or AC. I would rather watch a movie about the Engineers and their connection to the Xeno rather than a movie about AI.

Yes it seems like the gestation period of the Xeno was messed with but that was far from my biggest problem.

David as the creator of the Xenos is really stupid maybe even more so since I find the take-over of the Alien franchise and turn it into a boring AI angle just bad. Sure they could have done that in more interesting ways like the Engineers finding the eggs and developed their own versions but they sort of went with one boring explanation. I sort of blame this on Scott but maybe Fox is responsible for that too.

Some scenes were too slow and too long so they bored me. Seeing David and Walter talk about things was interesting but the scene was too slow and made me feel tired in the end when that scene was over. Maybe my attention-span is too short, that is a possibility.

If they would drop the Xeno and just focus on David I would be maybe not pissed off but at least I would not be happy. If that would be the case I would probably tell people to avoid that crap.

Having well developed/well-written human characters is the most important thing. That is in part what made Alien so good and why Prometheus and AC are in huge part failures. Please focus on the humans in the next movie and make them sympathetic and interesting. At least make them more than two-dimensional or so they won't be like archetypes.

Big Dave: To me the Alien movies have never been purely about the Xeno, it has also got to do with the human journey or what ever to call it. How we as humans behave when we get into situations that none of us could ever imagine that we could end up in. When I look back at it, it made it interesting because the Xeno was a threat and the reason why that worked is that the actors in Alien did that so well so you found that to be a believable threat. A Xeno costume could be thrown in in a comedy movie (closest to that is maybe AR) or a drama movie, it is the atmosphere and how the humans respond to that that is the important thing. We got to care for the characters and since they failed with them in AC and Prometheus the movies sort of became what they are, disappointments.

Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Romulus 2 NewsRidley Scott wants to 'replace' the Xenomorph in Alien: Covenant 2

The short reply is this: Is there any online petition that we can sign and ask them to replace the director? It can't get much worse than it is now.

A long reply is this:

The Xeno has been in the Alien movies since day one and was based on Star Beast. If you ask anyone about the Alien franchise and what they think of when they hear that I bet that most would say Ripley or the Xeno. This is how much they are associated to the franchise. Very few would probably say David or Shaw.  Sure you can have different characters in movies but the monsters got to at least be Xeno related. Having an Alien movie without a Xeno or something related to it is just a bad move because then it seems to me that it stops being something related to Alien.

Scott says that the Xeno is cooked (not effective anymore) my thought is that maybe Scott is cooked. I have a dislike for where this franchise is headed with all the focus on artificial intelligence which I find boring.

I think that the Engineers are more interesting than David. Give the Engineers a stronger connection to the Xeno and have better human characters, then I would be interested but not the way it is headed now.

Making it all about David and AI would make it boring, I would rather watch a movie about Lassie (the dog) than more movies about AI masking as Alien movies.

Reply
Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumRidley Scott blames the diminishing returns of AC on the "Alien" itself

He still doesn't get it, he doesn't understand that a lot of people are not as much into AI as he is. The beast isn't cooked but a story that isn't interested in the human characters is. I don't want another AI movie with the human beings as something that is thrown into the back of the room so to speak.

Give me a movie that focuses on well-written human characters and what they go through so I can have some sort of sympathy for them. I can't sympathize with a mad android.

If this is what they will do (more David) they should quit because it just gets boring (I repeat - boring boring boring). No (or very few) sympathetic or interesting human characters plus and over-reliance and focus AI = crappy movie.
