Ah, that's why I don't remember! It's been a long time since I watched Alien3. Thanks for telling me.

The Xeno attacked the claw. That Xeno was trying to fight that claw. I think many animals would try to attack the claw because they thought it might be another animal. The Xeno's not stupid, but was just mistaken.

For Close Encounters that's not the smartest alien, being the first created by David based mainly on the fauna from Paradise, probably that's the reason he is running on all four, like the dog alien from Alien3, even his feet remind me of the dog alien. The Protomorph is nothing like the Big Chap and when the script was written they were well aware.

However the Protomorph is not worse than the "bugs" from Aliens who were running like idiots against the automatic sentry rifles.

@ IIapagokc,

Sorry for the delayed response, if you haven't already be sure to check out the Hadleys Hope Aliens: Isolation proposal I posted on my Gaming Blog, as well as its Facebook page. IMO the ideas there would be a good jumping off point for the gameplay.

Kethol I want to understand what is a biomechanical organism like the xenomorph and possibly the engineers from LV223. How can you alter an organic life form to become biomechanical?

Can David arrive to such outcome with his limited means and knowledge?

To get his organic Protomorph play basketball and sing, maybe, but to make it biomechanical?

hoxAlien: Covenant ForumWhy was the lifter so out of control?

Yes. As I recall it, the Protomporph had a bit of a snarl at the opening crane mouth before he had a go at it. Maybe not the smartest of Aliens, his aggression got the better of him.

SuperAlienAlien: Covenant ForumWhy was the lifter so out of control?

The cargo lift had reduced maneuverability as it was meant only to transfer the heavy machinery from the ship to the ground. It was basically a platform with 2 engines at the stern and 4 vertical thrusters at the corners. Plus the cargo crane. It was not designed to maneuver in a city or a plaza packed with statues. The controls of the cargo lift were also very basic in design to allow easy maintenance without some electronic spare parts. Tennessee was actually struggling to maneuver the cargo lift due to said reasons even though he was a good pilot.

The Protomorph attacked the crane because it threatened to push him off the platform. And Daniels used the crane because she was out of ammo and also had to distract the alien who was bumping his head into the windows and any crack was dangerous when the cargo lift would have been out of the atmosphere again, they did not have the suits with them.

Kethol In defence of Daliens I must say that the Alien franchise is not precisely known for being scientifically orthodox. Furthermore, not that I consider what is on the short "The Advent" to be canon, but in there David mentions that the pathogen is a form of radical AI, which would lead some to believe it is DNA mixed with something artificial. If I am not mistaken there was an Alien 3 script that introduced the idea of a synthetic getting infected by alien DNA.

Reply
KetholAlien: Covenant ForumConfusion

Daliens, I think you may not understand what DNA is, or what David or Walter are. DNA is a nucleic acid that stores genetic instructions inside the cells of all living organisms.

David and Walter are androids, made of plastics, polymers, alloys, and microprocessors. They are not made of living cells containing molecules of DNA. They are machines.

Actually it is explained at one point in the movie; Daniels, Tennessee and Upsworth deliberate about whether the cargo lift can work or not for what they intend to do. Tennesse is very skeptic about it. I think its simply a vehicle that is not good  for maneuvering.

Yea but it was unstable way before the crane was deployed!

I mean it narrowly misses several columns, Tennessee says he's beginning his ascent and he it crashes into and scrapes along the roof of the temple, then comes down the other side, almost at ground level, all before the scene with the crane/grappler.

And yea, the alien makes a point of jumping into the claw and attacking it.

For Close Encounters I think it is a leap of faith on behalf of Daniels. She assumes that the xenomorph is going to feel threatened and attack the crane, as it it was another beast maybe. Of course it is too much assuming, because she just met the xenomorph.

Good Point, that does sound like something he would do lol.

Michael Weyland is the company rep that looks like Bishop. Him and a security crew shows up to Fiorina 161 at the end of Alien 3 to try and convince Ripley to surrender her Queen chestburster. Promises they will remove it and destroy it. She didn't believe him.....

No. Because no huge, slow moving claw should have ever captured the xeno. They are much to quick, agile, elusive, stealthy, smart to be caught by that. Lazy writing.  Very disappointing aspect of the whole film.    Why be scared, just use huge slow moving cranes to kill them.   Dumb.

A therapist is nothing to be embarrassed about :) But, I know what you mean though. I don't tell everyone that I see a therapist. I tell friends but not coworkers. Not cab drivers whom I've just met, either.

Recently I was going to my therapist by cab. My therapist works in a multi-story office building and the driver asked me what kind of appointment I had there.

"A doctor's appointment." I said. And, he was super nosy, asking me what kind/what for. So I just said "Fungus." Mostly because...I was super annoyed at his pushiness and nosiness, lol.

Anyhow, I love how we've once again evolved a conversation about androids into a discussion of philosophy and human psychology.

That is the beauty of Science Fiction.

Good night. :)

David has only 2 facehuggers now and no pathogen. If the facehuggers are the same he used on Oram and Lope he cannot hope to get a biomechanical xenomorph even if he uses all 2000 colonists. The best he can get is a bipedal Protomorph, after a long cycle of facehugging and chestbursting.  And now, without any pathogen the only chance to mix his synthetic DNA (or whatever gets close to that meaning) with the alien DNA is to get facehugged himself.

The second chance is to have Walter facehugged after their fight and to get a biomechanical xenomorph out of it, something that would fill with eggs the hold of one of the Juggernauts in the underground hangar. In this way, when the engineers return to Paradise one of them would try to fly the Juggernaut and so he becomes the Space Jockey.

I have one miniaturized Big Chap just in front of my eyes and there is no way such design can be the result of 2 facehuggers and 2000 colonists. Even if we have 2 androids to play with, this xenomorph looks more like the engineers' technology. It's all tubes and looks more mechanical than biological,  not hard to imagine that his skeleton is mechanical as well.

I said no because I felt embarrassed and I just didn't want to spend my money on that.  I have been called cheap before, so maybe that's why I don't want to spend my money on that.

I do agree they can be.  Not that I know from experience, but it just makes sense from reading about their kind of work.

I love that part where Daniels is shooting from hanging off the side of the lander.  It is really epic.  I love it.  What a way to kill a Xeno!  She really made it look easy!  What skill!

Yup! joylitt and I Moon Girl are right. While the cargo lift is in motion the crane is meant to be stowed. The crane is just for loading and unloading cargo while the lift is landed. Releasing the crane set the lift off-balance and made it really difficult for Tennessee to compensate.

@I Moon Girl

Well, I think therapists can be very useful, in that, they are meant to teach you practical skills you can apply even when they're not around.

They should be somewhat like teachers.

I think, instead of my therapist trying to talk me out of each of my irrational anxieties individually, it's better if she can teach me how I can talk myself out of them.

So, instead of me coming to her every week and saying "I sneezed on a person 10 years ago, and lately I can't stop worrying that they may have died from it, what do you think?" and having her tell me "It's probably fine." and doing that with each and every one of my problems, it's better if she can teach me methods of not dwelling on potential but improbable catastrophes.

It's like the "teach-a-man-to-fish" proverb.

Now, if I had a Therapist Walter standing around me 24/7, I'd probably just constantly ask him stuff like: "Hey, did I run over someone back there?" and he'd be like "Nope."

And "Hey, do you think I washed these lentils enough..., I think I didn't wash them enough." and he'd be like "You washed them plenty."

And, I'd just get really dependent on him, and not learn the skills to talk myself down.

But, I think therapists who teach coping skills can be super useful.

When the Xeno got on board the lifter, Daniels order Tennessee to unlock the robotic arm attached to the lifter.  The massive robotic arm eventually grabbed the Xeno and killed it.

That massive arm is what through the lifter out of balance.  Tennessee even said to Daniels after she ordered him to release it that the arm was going to throw the lifter off balance.

That is what we are seeing in the movie.  After the Xeno died, the lifter was brought back into place and locked down.

The deployment of the crane is what destabilizes it.

That's a good point actually.  I went to a therapist once and after I left I said, "I'm not going back," and I never did.  There Therapist Walter did sound interesting to me until the point you made.  Now that model has lost some of it's luster to me.  Still, I would enjoy "someone" who can remind me of the what really matters in life sometimes.  I guess not enough to spend $100,000 dollars on one though.  I still choose the Teacher Walter!

Of course, the David from the beginning of Prometheus would be the best option hands down, but after he found out about what the Engineers do, than the decision gets much more interesting.  I think David would remove the Xeno and would be captivated by it and study it IF that was the David at the beginning of Prometheus.  He wouldn't kill me.  I treat people kindly, so I don't think that David would hurt me either.

The David after Prometheus makes things harder to decide.  Honestly, I don't know who Michael Weyland is.  I couldn't trust Gediman with my dead body almost like I wouldn't trust the David after Prometheus with my dead body either.

I'd choose Carter J. Burke and just accept my death.  Plus, if Carter J. Burke is involved, he's probably the reason I'm all alone in a shipping container with a dead facehugger.  That just seems like his kind of style to me.  I would just try to escape the shipping container so that when the chestburster bursts, it creates mayhem.  I'm not letting someone impregnate me without at least trying to create a little mayhem before I die.  $h!t's about to go down!

I think the acid level was equal across the board personally

The facehugger's acid burned through several decks, but, if you remember in Aliens, Hicks gets sprayed with it and it burns through a couple? of layers of armour rather quickly too

It seems to imply it burnt right through and burnt his chest, but it's not shown.

It's tough. I think it is a dangerous road to go down (creating AI weapons) and since I am a scifi nerd I feel like it's wrong! "I wasn't built to serve and neither were you." Just making these machines to go to war and probably be destroyed is messed up.

Also, even though we are trated to pretty outlandish scenarios in a lot of scifi films, the risk of these autonomous beings going rogue is a pretty real worry. At least once the world really gets into the technology. It is still pretty young at this point, I believe.

So, I don't know. Do everything possible to try and prevent or account for the pitfalls with this technology. I don't see a way to ban people from using weaponized AI and I don't see a future in which it doesn't happen.

@I Moon Girl

That is a very good premise for a movie! I'd watch it!

Actually the quiz was pretty accurate, and I actually do already see a therapist. I wouldn't consider myself insecure though, at least not socially.

I have an anxiety disorder that revolves mostly around irrational guilt - fearing that I'll be responsible for catastrophic harm to another sentient being.

Like: I'll have to retrace my route when driving, because I'll convince myself that I've run someone over. Or, I'll get half-way through making dinner, and then throw all the food away, suddenly believing that the ingredients have become contaminated somehow, that if I feed it to someone they'll be poisoned (this fear only arises when I cook for someone other than myself). The list goes on and on.

I suppose a Therapist Walter could reassure me that such concerns are irrational. Though, it'd be better if I could develop those self-reassurance skills without being dependent on an outside observer.

But, this...poorly wired guilt circuit of mine... is undoubtedly why a series that explores such out of reach themes as being unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality provides a welcome escape for me. :)

@VivisectedEngineer

I don't know how the website decides who we should "buy" when we only answer 4 or 5 questions.  Still, if you think that's you than I am amazed how how the website can get the right model with the right person after 4 or 5 questions!

Hey, if a Therapist Walter is for you, I'd spend that $100,000 dollars on that!  You don't have to tell anyone though.  I guess the Therapist Walter would start its therapy once it hears that your insecure with who you are and your Walter choice and would want to listen to you and hand you worksheets so you can figure out who you are or something.

Honestly though, a Therapist around you all the time could always be there to bring you back to what really matters in life.  There would also be "someone" there to listen to you too and talk about your day with.  That doesn't sound like a bad option either, but I think I would be a little insecure with that decision since I don't want people to know I have a Therapist model.

I think that would make a good movie actually.  The life of an emotionally and possibly mentally unstable person who can function in life, but isn't the best with people.  The android would always be there to help the person see the better side of things.  I think it would actually be a comedy and also a "feel good" movie because it always talks about the most important things that truly matter in life that people tend to take for granted.  Haha, I think it would definitely have some funny parts in it!  I'm not gonna type it out though because I just don't wanna...sorry!

Very good points! It would be very interesting to learn from the Teacher Walter.

Lol, when I took the quiz it said I was most compatible with the therapist Walter. I wonder what that means? Probably that I'm too anxious, lol.

I remember there was one called the "Adversary" Walter. Lol, who wants that one!? I bet it would be almost just like a David. I think it was meant to be an attorney?

@IRaptus

Oh gosh dammit! There you go making it all ethically complicated. But...very valid point.

Well, in that case, David is definitely the worst choice because his vendetta is against the whole of humanity.

"My choice: Weyland,...perhaps even in death you might have contributed to something greater... "

I do admire your optimism...and after all, he did create Bishop. So he's got a brilliant mind...which can be a double edged sword when it comes to weapons engineering (and, let's face it, what else can research on a xeno be used for?).

Realistically isn't suicide the most altruistic option in the case of chestburster infection? Can altruism really be expected to trump survival instinct? We likely wouldn't persist as a species if it did.

Well, in the interest of self-preservation, I'm sticking with Gediman and I think I can hardly be faulted for it.

I Moon GirlAlien: Covenant ForumSoy Meat- You can only choose one synthetic for your crew. Who do you pick and why?

I took the Walter personality quiz to see which Walter I should get.  The Teacher model was almost a 100% match.  As I looked at the other options, I realized that the Teacher model is actually 100% for me.  The more I thought about it, the more it made sense to me.

I love learning and if I had a Walter model, I know I could learn so much more.  That Teacher model just excites me for that very reason.

I feel AI androids would be similar to the Internet we have today with all of its information.  Like with the internet, you just wouldn't know how awesome it is until you have lived with it.  Nobody is going to return the internet now that they have it because it is so awesome. So, if I had the Walter Teacher model, I see that Walter model as being able to answer my questions and help me with researching the answers to questions and help me research.  Plus, if the Walter can teach, then the Walter should also know how to do the tasks it is teaching.

I see the Teacher model as an extension of today's smartphone, but a million times better because it would be like talking to a person.

Very interesting! What do you want the teacher model of Walter for? To teach you about some specific subject?

To be honest with you, when I first took the quiz/saw the advertisements, I really wanted the teacher model of Walter too!

But, I just wanted him to stay home and write all my lesson plans for me. Not actually go to my classroom to teach. ...Because then he might replace me <_<

Actually...I find myself really in need of a Walter android to write my lesson plans now, as I'm spending all my time on this board procrastinating when I should be working on tomorrow's lesson, lol!
