Agreed Jonesy, this trailer really invigorated my excitement for this series. There really is no better time to be an Alien fan.
I noticed several nods to Alien 3 and Aliens in this trailer too. Very atmospheric and on brand!

It feels unreal to have another epic Alien saga so soon. I am somewhat still in Romulus mode and I still have the Alien VR yet to finished. And there is Alien Isolation 2 in the works. Such an amazing period to experience.

Also, neat callback in this pic to Ripley 8 in Alien Resurrection, when you see her in the jail cell before Call comes in to confront her.
In an interview with Fandango, Ridley Scott compared the Engineers to "dark angels" inspired by John Milton's Paradise Lost, highlighting their complex and ambivalent nature. He also described their role in Prometheus as that of an ancient and advanced civilization, responsible for the creation of humanity. However, he did not use the exact phrase mentioned in your question.
This idea that their body—especially their bone structure—is perceived as a “cultural document” to be preserved makes me think of a kind of aesthetic or philosophical conservatism, where evolution does not mean total erasure of the past, but rather integration and homage.
I wouldn't mind an alien-movie that has the Engineers in it in some way, that would be cool but they need to get the characters right.
Oh my god, Timothy Olyphant looks amazing as a Synth, very Roy Batty (according to the director, the look was Olyphant's choice). The Westworld/Caprica vibes are off the charts now, totally can't wait to see the series.
Interesting theories, I'm leaning towards there being many different factions of Engineers.
In David's Drawings artbook, David had this to say:

@jdvyne, I hear you and I agree to a degree - I also hope the Xenomorph isn't diminished to an easily defeat-able "bug" yet again. It should be the epitome of terror but in the show I believe the Xenomorph specimen on board the USCSS Maginot is an adult form, not sure if any eggs or Facehuggers are going to be part of the containment breach. If that's the case then these Hybrids and Synths will only have to track and kill a single Xenomorph - which is doable and mimics that of the Nostromo plot. If there are eggs / Huggers however then yes, I don't think the Alien infestation should be eradicated so easily.
@Svanya, I concur, I loved Westworld and the Synthetic story arcs have been vastly more captivating than the Human ones in pretty much every Alien film. While I expect the Alien won't get as much screentime as the Hybrids / Synthetics, I do hope they don't wait to crank up the heat for the final 2 episodes - leaving us on a cliffhanger to Season 2. So many series partake in that kind of setup and it's frustrating. Slow burn for the first 6 episodes and then bombard us with the content we've been craving for the last 2 episodes. Given FX have already ordered a Season 2 before Season 1 has even released makes me nervous this show may play that game too.
Also I'd like to tell you one of my earliest theories from a time before "Alien: Covenant" (it is still probably my favorite one but with Alien: Covenant Ridley Scott seems to have moved away from that direction).
The Story:
There is only one Engineer faction. They have seeded many worlds, including earth, where they have created humanity. The Engineers revere and worship life and as an religious act the seed worlds and create life. And because the Engineers think of themselfs as the pinnacle of creation, eventually they always create life in their own image.
Then one day the Engineers stumble upon a planet, where they find the ruins of an ancient civilization. THE FIRST ENCOUNTER OF ALIEN LIFE! This civilization seems to have been wiped out. But in the remains of this civilization they find: The Xenomorph-eggs or -DNA. They try to recreate it and are somewhat successful.
The Engineers realize, that this life form is superior to the life, that the Engineers have seeded. To use a metaphor: The Engineers have seeded daisies so to speak and now they have found a rose. It is more beautiful, resilient and able to resist (it has a blossom but it also has thorns). The Engineers - who worship life - realize, what they have made a mistake, which they now must correct.
So the Engineers drop Alien eggs on every planet, that they have seeded and sure enough on every planet the Aliens supplant the previous life forms. To continue the metaphor: In every garden, that the Engineers have created, they now plant roses. And in every garden the roses supplant the daisies, while the Engineers stand by, watching captivated how every garden of theirs is being embellished.
Since the Engineers have come to the conclusion, that the Alien life form is superior, they have started to incorporate its DNA into their own DNA. This is why they look biomechanical at the end of Prometheus. Humanity simply is one of the last of the Engineers creations, that is to be "updated". The Engineers don't hate or despise us - THEY WANT TO HELP US GETTING BETTER! THIS IS LOVECRAFTIAN HORROR AT ITS FINEST!
Unfortunately 2000 years ago on LV 223 there was an accident, so the Engineers couldn't complete their work. The last step of course, after all their creations would have been updated, the Engineers would have updated themselfs!

What must be clear, is that Alien is essentially Lovecraftian horror. That means, that the horror essentially must be beyond human comprehension! Lovecraftian horror is beyond good and evil. There are forces at work, that are so much above us, that they don't even care about us!
The Alien must be from the far reaches of space and time, it is ancient and we cannot understand why it is there. It is like a force of nature! It is truly alien! Its origins must remain in the dark!
With my story Ridley Scott could have introduced the Engineers and made the Engineers into an all-powerful race and the creators of humanity and so forth - all while still not touching the origin of the Alien and its Lovecraftian horror!!! The Engineers may have found the original form of the Alien or something similar but they must not have created it in the first place (ESPECIALLY DAVID MUSTN'T HAVE CREATED IT!!!). But the way "Alien: Covenant" was made, it seems to me that he has shut the door on my version of the story...
Wait the Engineers wanted to prevent A.I. technology from developing on Earth back during the Iron Age? That doesn't make a lick of sense.
But B and C were good choices too

I honestly think the Xeno won't feature much in the series and it will be more of a Westworld type story, there's too much focus on the Androids/Synths for it not to be the case. The whole Neverland theme is also interesting, quite a few of the Hybrids have names from that story/movie (Wendy, Tootles).
I personally am intrigued because I love the android lore in this universe but i'm betting people that prefer the Xeno will be disappointed. Ridley Scott always said he wanted to make a 3rd movie after Prometheus and Covenant that explored the androids more than the Xenos and I think this will be it (He is listed as the executive producer on the project, so he is involved to some extent).
This also seems to follow some of the themes and storylines that were covered in the comics.
I've seen Fargo and Legion and Noah Hawley is a genius imo, so I have faith in his vision for the series.
I'm not convinced.
Also I'm afraid of the premise of this series. As far as I understand it, a ship crashes on earth - a ship that carries an Alien or an Alien-Derivative. The Search-and-Rescue-Team, that was sent to the crashsite, discovers the Alien and then has to fight for its survival. In the end the Crew will surely win and the Alien-threat will be banished.
This diminishes the Alien yet again. The Alien is supposed to be the personification of absolute evil and a perfect organism - designed to destroy. As soon as no more than one single Alien touches the surface of a planet, that should be game over for the planet. Yet here we go again - humans find and destroy it. The Alien seems not to be a threat after all... In AVP 2 (not that it's canon) at least they had to drop a nuke on the city! Surely that won't be necessary in Alien: Earth, since they can handle the Alien more easily. In one concept art I saw a human fighting an Alien with a sword - WITH A SWORD!
I thought Prometheus wasn't going to be part of the TV series's lore? Hawley make up your freaking mind!

Looks incredible, I can't wait. Timothy's looking a lot like Roy Batty which is a nice nod to Blade Runner, also we finally get to see Yutani and she looks amazing! (She kinda has that Rachael hair so another nod to Blade Runner).
Yea, i'm really thinking the show is going to focus a lot less on the Xeno stuff and more on the Synths/Androids. I would be happy with that tbh.

David used his beloved Shaw to create that monster, it's his child and his life's work, of course he's gonna be upset it was killed. He wanted to create life and become more than an android or the humans and engineers, to become a god I suppose. David certainly never followed anyone's instructions once he was left to his own devices. He also contacted WY at the end of Alien:Covenant so that's probably how they knew about the Xeno and replaced the Science Officer with Ash in the first movie, to get a specimen.
I honestly don't think an AI is running WY, I do think they will expand on the Android/Synthetics lore in the series though, so i'm looking forward to that.
The series seems to be taking notes from the old comics like 'Aliens: Earth War'. WY knew about the Xeno because of events that happened in some of the comics IIRC. This series is set a couple of years before either Prometheus or Alien and WY was aware of the Xeno in that too.

Do we think the other creatures are variations of different Xenomorphs / Facehuggers? That would be interesting actually... Different Xenomorphs from different environments and hosts would be fascinating to explore.
Yea, it looks a bit like Shaw's squid-baby, it's also hatching like Sil did in Species (Alien Romulus used that as well). I think this series is using the old Kenner toys versions of the Xenos. The poster that was released today features the flying-bug facehugger/Xeno that was in the trailer and was part of the toy collection from 1987 ish, after Aliens came out. The same toyline that had a metallic looking Bishop.
I'm honestly more excited to get some Android/Synthetics lore, Scott was going to do that for the 2nd Alien Covenant movie that was never produced, hoping they expand on the lore here.
That's definitely a flying-bug facehugger in the container, just like the old Kenner toys! The one in the first teaser was flying so it's got to be this one.

BUMP! I've revived the Alien: Analects official page here on the site and added a link to it in our sidebar (expand using the = menu icon top right if you're on mobile). It's been many years since we announced this series and since then it's garnered discussion across many platforms even without us promoting it. I figured with the new series coming out it would be good to bring attention back to this project and fun to reminisce!
I'm all for expanding the lore and exploring different Xenomorph host concoctions but I really hope they don't get carried away and diminish the essence/mystery surrounding the organism itself.
I think there could be a genetic handshake going on, between the engineer DNA within the Xenomorphs and the minimal Engineer DNA still left in humans after all this time, but it would mostly be coming from the Xenomorph's recent engineer
relationship.
