Certainly rumors can join an official plot, but what I meant is the apparent displeasure that some people seem to feel respect the idea of Blade Runner, Prometheus and Alien may have some sort of link. As I said I do not think something so incoherent, on the contrary I think the idea would be pretty well...

The theory this thread is based on is interesting, but very cliched I found. The only part I liked was how one of the characters fits in with the actual Prometheus mythology in early human history. I just hope that this movie IS dark/gritty and horrifying! Not some crappy pg-13/12a rating, or I'll be majorly pissed. . .

That quote from Damon about Prometheus being an ALIEN/BLADE RUNNER mash-up is interesting, but I think we are taking it too literal. I'm guessing we won't see actual Blade Runners (police division that hunt down replicants). We might see David called a replicant which is basically an artificial person. Maybe we'll see a reference to Tyrell Corporation (I doubt it, but maybe), or even a reference to artificial persons with implanted fake memories. Call me crazy, but I don't think a character named Deckard will be a member of the crew.

@Kane77, Yeah I know the crash at the end of Ressurection was on Earth. What I meant is that there is no point of reference that would link 'Bladerunner' and the 'Alien' universe so it is entirely possible that they co-exhist in the same universe. A few seconds of crash footage and deleted scenes of Ridley 8 and Call talking by the wreckage is not enough to establish more than Earth, France, Paris......

Walt Disney, took aside every single person he hired personally aside, and told them this... "'round here, we keep moving forward" "not matter what, just keep moving forward" Just FYI, I always liked that, there was more, much more to it, but that's the "jist" of it

@Engr... yes i saw that months ago i'm reading between the lines here but to me that suggests tone alien blade runner mash up could mean anything that's not a confirmation that the films are being linked directly im guessing that there are tonal elements that could be considered elements from alien/blade runner in the sense of artificial life/genetics, or look, i cant see there being a tyrell corp or reference to nexus models etc . I can see references that explore the same themes as both of those movies like mortality, possible crisis of conscious from artificial life forms androids and alien sympathy. and the possibility that the biomechanic is born from the artificial life. ENGR...."And c'mon Jesus, this is a fan forum, furGadsake, not journalism", a lot of what you say is correct in as much companys create artificial news to create buzz etc but that was just damon speaking on the spur of the moment to a JOURNALIST using those two films to give an overall sense of tone in my humble opinion. Ok yes wild speculation is fun enjoy yourselves.

@Jeffomorph I don't think PROMETHEUS would lead directly to the rumored BLADE RUNNER sequel which Ridley is gong to do (this may turn out to be false as Ridley is now linked to a project called THE COUNSELOR developed by a writer of NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN). But I would say it is interesting that the movie would use the idea of Replicants/Slaves made popular by BLADE RUNNER. I don't think you would see a noodle-eating Bounty Hunter chasing renegade androids in PROMETHEUS.

If any of you have read Chariot of the Gods by Erich von Daniken then you'll have an idea about PROMETHEUS. It's really the story of who is out there, the ones making the stars, and possibly if someone is trying to screw humanity over (okay maybe that opinion would get me killed if I was in a Sci Fi but sue me).

@Jeystone - You have managed to put into words exactly how I feel about this movie been watered down to some Walt Disney, kiddy friendly sci fi flick. I have been so excited about this film, and find it hard to verbalise my utter disgust if it gets the kid rating. To quote Ridley "its gonna be really nasty" "its the dark side of the moon" "I want to scare the living shit out of you" ...Playing it safe with Prometheus is not the correct strategy, even financially I think it would get more traction in the long term if they really went for it(the Gods_- Xenos doing really perverse things) Its not that I want to see violence and perversity for the sake of it, I just believe those ingredients are required to make this the dark, foreboding, unnerving entity that it should be. I fear Ridley has gone all Lucas on our asses! He should tell the soulles fox suits to go fuck themselves and not have bothered, or at least had the creative intellect to make the thing on a lower budget.

I can honestly say i have never in my adult life paid to see a pg13 film at the cinema the last time i did go to the cinema i had a press pass when i did a review for revenge of the sith and I was doing a short column in a local publication.

Anyway, I just hope it's not softened as in the case of the Expendables 2 ... or as Carter of Mars (Disney) where we see a Dejah Thoris running across the sand dunes of Mars with more costumes than Mother Teresa...instead of wearing a dental floss

The biggest problem is the movie budget...they don't make 150 million R rated movies...period! That is the only reason why this movie might end up as a PG13...I trust that their will be a directors cut on the blueray/DVD...but in the cinemas...we will be lucky to get an adult rating.......sadly!

Hey I wish PROMETHEUS to be a hard R, but just by analyzing the market (AVATAR & APES movie success, both Fox Production), I think it is safe to say that the movie will likely be PG13. Europe almost definitely will get the R version, if Fox decides on 2 ratings. I hope not.

PG13 or R, I'll be at the theater to see it along with my wife, while my daughter stays at the grandparents'. :-) I think/hope Prometheus will be good regardless of the rating. Besides, 2012 looks to be a good year for movies, so one of them on my list (and hopefully several) are going to satisfy me.

We adults deserve to see an R rated version, period. True, a film of this magnitude must be "milked" for all of the profit that it can bring. That's just business. But, to dilute art (which is what Scott and Giger are all about) is a travesty. If they want to make this available to children (IMHO this is NOT a kid's film) as well, then allow people a choice between seeing the PG13 OR R rated version. Today's modern multi-screen theaters certainly can accommodate one of each. The closest to my home has 18 state-of-the-art screens. Mr. Scott: Tell the suits your art MUST NOT be watered down to the point that adults will not want to see it. We might as well just wait for the Blu-Ray to be released in your Director's Cut.

also, just my pinion but if I am in the demographic FOX is shooting for, that is a teen angst filled 15-19 year old male, I am going to be far more attractyed to a 14+ rated film, than one rated PG...it's a bad move by Fox, not very bright in my opinion, and in the end it matters not cause Ridley said there will be an explicit dvd version. I cannot wait for it.

@Juxtapose, 'Girl with a dragon tattoo' was a 100 million dollar budget, R rated movie....so um yes, they do make large budget R rated movies...if the director stands his ground and doesnt pussy out

agree completely with the thread statement, i dont need to give reasons as they - and many more, have been well stated in the previous comments. still love the film though because i am a true fan, dont feel the need to bash, just focus on the good aspects of these movies!! well said rc8, there is a lot of alien snobbery in these forums. i think the series has to be looked at from an all encompassing position. yes while alien is great, it is lent more weight by virtue of the other films. there are people on here giving reviews on the series and they hav'nt even seen all the films....thats just plain stupid.

It's a little unfair to say the film hasn't aged well; it was 1986 and the resources that Cameron had back then were well used to make the film. You could arguably say all films from that gendre haven't aged well (e.g. the face repair scene of the terminatior, etc). I think the introduction of special effects, cgi, 3d have made our expectations so vastly different from 1986 that people become way too critical. I think we should respect and enjoy them for the time they were made and the impact they have had..........

@fuck it- lets go for it! Exactly! Their judging the entire series off of their own opinion. And as you said, they should be judging it from an "all encompassing position". I'm a true fan as well and to be honest, what makes a TRUE fan of any film series is that you acquire the taste and embrace all the films. If someone is a TRUE fan of a 4 part series such as Alien. Saying that you only love one film is to me not really a fan. Your not accepting the FULL story that has been put forth from the start of the first film. Whether you enjoyed it or not, there's a difference between a true loyal fan and just a fanboy of one certain film. There's a lot of Star Wars fans out there that I know of that only like the last 3 Star Wars and ignore the first 3. If your a true fan you'd accept every film as part of the franchise and not neglect any of it. To me if you only love say one of the Alien movies, to me your just a film enthusiast or a regular film goer. If you love lets say the first two Alien films ALIEN and ALIENS, I consider that a partial fan or "half ass fan" as I like to put it. They are only accepting half of the concrete story of Alien. I run into these types of fans more than anything else and to call yourself a TRUE fan when you've only accepted 2 out of the four films is blasphemy. I've run into people That only like the first 3 Alien films, ALIEN, ALIENS and ALIEN 3. To me thats just a fan. Yeah your accepting the first 3 films but your leaving out the fourth which is, whether or not you liked it, is still canon to the series. To me what defines a TRUE AND LOYAL ALIEN FAN is that your willing to accept and embrace ALIEN, ALIENS, ALIEN 3 AND ALIEN RESURRECTION as a full circle series. Its a 4 part collection of films that defines the Alien species and Ripley's story. If you love and accept all the 4 films to me thats a TRUE ALIEN fan. To say you only accept one or two them and still consider yourself a TRUE fan of the series is to me just a load crap. And like I said above, opinions are JUST opinions. Facts are facts. If your a true fan you'd accept the films that are canon in the series which are the 4 films.

If you want to see a Sci-Fi classic that has stood the test of time!!! watch Forbidden Planet!! it's over fifty years old, and the SFX still look awesome for a film of that era!!! When I first saw Aliens it was a fantastic film!! and by modern standards no,it does not look too clever now!!...Mind you if they re-rendered Aliens using CGI or 3D would it really add anything to the movie???

It is what it is - STILL A LEGENDARY MOVIE! We're spoilt today, that's our problem, and life before cgi doesn't exist for many. Truth is, on the contrary, the film HAS aged well. I don't even think the backscreen stuff is a problem. Everything retains the aesthetic of future industry, the drama of the piece is still intense, the characterisation excellent. It still looks like a big-screen movie that can entertain audiences for year. I argue that Avatar will probably date more visibly than Aliens, because of it's very dependence on a technology that is being refined by the hour. Personally Alien remains my favourite, but Aliens still gives me the chills and thrills too...when the sentries run out of ammo lol how I wish they had more!!!

im not so sure we are spoilt today i haven't seen a true sc fi classic in years depending on what rocks your boat i never liked any of the matrix films and i'm struggling to think of a genuine classic in the scfi genre . Am i supposed to like transformers. pitch black The Chronicles of Riddick ? battlefield LA SKYLINE i dont count super hero films i think they are their own genre. the best sc fi in recent years has been on the small screen bsg , finge etc the last star trek was enjoyable but im struggling cowboys and aliens haven't seen yet. Although sunshine wasn't bad . wall-eeeee terminator salvation was ok solaris was good but a remake. the day the earth stood still the original was better.

yeah the big problem today is that everyone is so entrenched in a world of action and instant gratification. We all want everything "NOW". Movies tend to over do the action, the story sucks, the cgi is overdone, movies rip off from other movies, every scene is spoiled through the trailers so that movie studios can draw in an audiences easier, audiences are always comparing one movie to another, studios are too afraid to produce anything original due to budget constraints and financial risks. Movies just don't leave an impact as they once did. Film studios and filmmakers alone are looking to just please the audiences and make films that will bring in a large profit. Nothing is just "story" anymore. Its all about pathetic and overdone cgi and action. Everyone goes to the movies to be entertained but nowadays its like their spoon feeding us rushed and overdone crap. They put everything in the trailer just so we can spend our money and increase their profits. A good director knows that they have to fight for their vision. They can't just let studios walk all over them just to get what they want. Film studios don't care about the creative content of a film, they just want things in a film that they know will draw in an audience. What a good director knows is that he will have to fight for his vision in order to convince the film studios to up the budget and thus giving the director more room to expand his vision. It seems like either directors nowadays either depend on too much cgi or they just want to remain "friends" with the studios thus giving the studio the opportunity to take advantage of whomever may make the film. In the end I feel like over 60 percent of the films we get nowadays are done in small amounts of time, rushed out the door and milked dry for advertisement purposes. Very few films, if any leave a lasting impact anymore. Originality has been thrown out the window for cash and cgi is overdone pathetically to the point where we have just accepted it. What happen to miniatures. What happened to "REAL". Is everything just going to be done in cgi one day? I really don't know. All I know is that film itself has taken a turn for the worst and the biggest problem is, it doesn't seem to be getting better anytime soon.

I'm not going for the whole spoiled thing either but movies do age. Just think on another 20-30 years from now how dated Avatar and Prometheus will look when we have interactive hologram movies with multiple endings based on critical key decision points throughout the movie. Or hell in 50 years we can go in and get lojacked in the cerebelleum like in Schwarzenneger and live out a fantasy movie.

PS. What truly attracted me to the ALIEN franchise, wasn't so much the life & times of the xenon (though very cool)... it was the story of Ridley, I mean Ripley. There will never be another like her. As long as she was in the franchise (I liked her human version better, no offense RC8), I was a fan... But movies take awhile to make and people grow older... The continuity suffers... Just ask Newt.

I have the boxset but have only seen the first two and one of the others (can't remember which). The antagonist Sil was actually designed by Giger, and the whole sexual element of the movie fits well with Gigers work. In the first one your really felt that there was this monster that wanted to consentually rape you so it could take over the world. But the sequels just became an excuse to show some skin and sex scenes which was a real shame, although there was the male version that appeared in 2, but it came over as OTT. The first I felt was a really good and clever film, I especially like it when the little girl cocoons herself on the train and emerges as Natasha Henstridge. but sequel by sequel it lost its core and became badly acted sci-fi erotica. A slightly arty alternative is Splice starring Adrien Brody.

I can't believe that someone dies in the first 28 minutes of a movie that lasted approximately 3 hours... unless of course, that there is something more scary and sinister that being eaten by a monster... in that case this premature death will only be an appetizer.

IMHO, I remember when Steven Segal was killed off in the first action part of "Executive Decision" and he was listed as one of the main characters in the movie trailer for the theaters. OK, wrong movie category, but I guess the early demise of a main character does drive the movie forward (in the directors eye). Maybe it gets them (The character) out of the picture (metaphorically) when the character no longer needs to be there and gets in the way of the storyline of the more major character(s)?
