cuponator3000Alien: Covenant ForumBest and worst characters of the Alien: Franchise?

Rick D, It seems that Ridley Scott isn't worrying enough about the characters, more the plot. I mean, we don't need character driven pieces from him, but he seems too worried about the big picture and, at this point, the spectacle of it.

I will make it simple. I liked pretty much everyone except Shaw, Milburn,  Fifield and Vickers- all from Prometheus. Hmmm...

My favorite design like many other people is the Alien Queen, the massive size and more insect-like appearance was always more creepy to me than any other alien from the movies

I agree that Oram and Shaw had some bad writing behind them. They had the potential especially Oram because he got the worst of the bad writing. He's stupid. He saw David rage at him for killing the Neomorph and the he just follows David to his lair and puts his face near the egg. That's some dumb writing. It's as dumb as Millburn and Fifield playing around with the hammerpede.

Another fun topic! I assume we are sticking with movie characters only? I think I'll stick to a top 5 for each category, myself!

Also here are some runner-ups for favorite (in no particular order): Parker, Brett, Ash, Hicks, Frost, Golic, Christie, Branson,Perez, and Walter. Bonus: Amand Ripley (from Alien: Isolation)!

Top 5 FAVORITE Characters:

1) David; He is part of a changing (at least for now) Alien franchise that some may not like, but he was the best part of Prometheus and I loved the delve into his madness in Covenant.

2) Ripley; One of cinema's greatest heroines!

3) Shaw; Wasn't written too super well, but Rapace made it a captivating role for me

4) Ripley 8; A super interesting (albeit, odd) spin on a beloved character

5) Oram; Once again, writing needed more work, but I relate to Oram in one way and think that Billy Crudup was awesome!

Top 3 LEAST favorite characters:

1) Milburn; Didn't get enough of his character to think he is anything but lonely and dumb.

2) Holloway; I sort of liked him, but the writing left him mostly one-dimensional

3) Vickers; Was pretty uninteresting despite the concept and the amazing actress

Wow... I can't really think of any characters I dislike THAT much! So, just three.

I wouldn't mind if they tone down the AI part but I don't want a connection to Ripley. Hopefully they will get the Engineer part right. No more Ripley, thanks (she is done). Also if they do some re-shoots I hope that they add parts that make the characters more interesting.

Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumWho's your favorite Android?

Call, Winona Ryder in short hair says it all really.

If I don't go by looks then I would say Bishop, he seems to be the most sympathetic android to me. Bishop is probably the one that I would most of all hang out with just talking about stuff.

Walter was OK, I almost forgot about him. David and Ash were assholes.

LOL at the dancing Ash. :D That would look so goofy on the dance-floor.

Blackwinter-witch: I wouldn't mind if they will put Walter in the next movie but I think that he is dead. The character was interesting as a counterweight to David.

No matter how I dislike Aliens sometimes, I must say it has the most and bestest one liners of the franchise.

"Game over man Game over"

"Get away from her you bitch"

"Stop your grinnin' and drop your linen!"

I am not really sure about what a one-liner is but anyways I like a lot of what Dillon says in Alien 3.

“I got to re-educate some of the brothers”

You can really see that he isn't just talking, he is dead serious about it. I wouldn't like to be the target of that re-education.

DK says something about Alien 3 being dark, that is one of the things that I like about it.

Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumSaid the Fandom...

Xenos can be menacing but you got to have sympathetic human characters to make it work and also not show the monster too much. This is why Alien worked because we had characters that we found sympathetic (maybe except for Ash, LOL) and they never showed the Xeno too much but still we knew that it was around and the atmosphere in the spaceship added to the feeling of the movie. My point is that just have an interesting monster isn't enough, you need other things also.

Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumAlien Covenant loses Certified Fresh Batch on Rotten Tomatoes. Fair or Unfair?

Honestly I am not the least bit surprised. If you have a movie with zero interest in the human characters maybe except for Oram, that is what you get.

I am not sure if it is misunderstood, I think it is fairly obvious that it sacrifices the human characters for androids and that it doesn't care about the humans compared to artificial intelligence. Another way to put it is this: the androids are not there as a part of the human story, the humans are there as a part of the AI story, which isn't of much interest to me.

They kind of get what they deserve.

To put it short: it is totally understandable that this is the way it develops for that movie (as far as its scores on Rotten Tomatoes is concerned).

Rick D mentions The Force Awakens, it is not a perfect movie and a lot of it has got to do with the lack of Luke IMO and also that Rey becomes a miss perfect. In no way is it as disappointing as Alien Covenant because it is about the humans mostly and not AI. Still it is better than the prequels by far.

50% is probably what I would give it (AC) at best.

Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumWhat's your favorite ship from the Alien franchise?

My favorite is probably the Sulaco. It doesn't look that clumsy and I like how it is arranged with all the guns at the front (if that is what they are). It is the best ship but it is not my favorite alien movie.

Thanks Rick D, I like this topic. There are so many interesting designs of space ships in this franchise.

Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumNeomorph Explained - Life Cycle of the Neomorph

That monster was interesting and new. I like how it was so small fast and deadly and very effective. Unfortunately it made the Xenomorph look a bit lame but I still think that the Xeno is an interesting monster.

I like how they did that scene when it smashed out of the back.

Maybe the spores are more effective than the eggs because they are smaller so you can't see them.

Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumMichael Fassbender seems to confirm in an interview that the kiss scene was a "joke"

I think that scene was both interesting when Walter and David discussed things because you could see the differences between their worldviews but at the same time it was so slow so it became a bit boring. They could have made that in some other way that wasn't so slow.

Thoughts_DreamsAlien: Covenant ForumVariety: Ridley Scott is in pre-production on a sequel to his 2017 “Alien: Covenant"

I really hope that the next movie will be good but from an article that I read it seems that it will be much about AI. I am afraid that this movie will be really bad. Keep more focus on well done human characters instead of what became of AC. Unfortunately I don't have very high hopes about this one because of how Covenant became the way it did.

As far as forego events I am not sure if every detail that leads up to the SJ needs to be told. There are probably many details that are not very important to the story.

Here are some that I like, just a random list

  • Ripley in Alien 3: She has been through a lot and has changed compared to the previous movies. Alien 3 is the only movie where I think that she has that something special about her.

  • Vasquez: I like that attitude that she has. She isn't afraid to fight when it is needed and she doesn't take any shit. Take the scene when they are told that the can not take any ammo with them and she pulls out some shells or what ever it is, it says something about her.

  • Bishop (Aliens): He just seems to be there to help and is a nice guy. “I prefer the term artificial person myself.” Sorry for stealing the quote Rick D, I just think that it says a lot about him as a character. It is kind of sad when he gets ripped apart by the queen, he didn't deserve that.

  • Janek: Smart (he figured out about the alien installation), down to earth kind of character (“I am just flying the ship”) while others had the most weird ideas and seemed unlikable

  • Call: Cute, the only reason why I watch Alien R at times even though the movie is kind of a joke

Disliked in no particular order

  • Shaw: Extremely naive and with no common sense (“no guns”).

  • The Newborn: What the F were they thinking?

  • Fifield and Milburn: Fucking idiots, they just came off as dumb

Thanks so much for all the support and kind words!

I figured this scene would work since it was already kind of orange in the movie. I wasn't sure it would even work buy I am happy with it.

I was not a fan of it but almost any scene in Las Vegas from Bladerunner 2049 would probably work on a pumpkin.

this got me thinking about the blu ray scene between Vickers and weyland. weyland seems surprised she was onboard and her response is that did he think she was going to spend years in a court room fighting for control of the company. makes me wonder which direction RS was gna go with this. obviously weyland has left someone else in charge of the company in his absence regardless of whether Vickers was there or not. now if the company was share based and weyland had the controlling stake, on his death Vickers would be the legal successor, unless she was an AI which she probably knew would give the board grounds to contest her legitimacy. or did he leave the company to someone else in his will? an update David model perhaps whom she would have to fight with for control??

I found this

Predator is a 1987 American science-fiction action directed by John McTiernan.[4] It stars Arnold Schwarzenegger as the leader of an elite special forces team which is on a mission to rescue hostages from guerrilla held territory in Val Verde in Central America's Northern Triangle. Kevin Peter Hall co-stars as the titular antagonist, a technologically advanced form of extraterrestrial life secretly stalking and hunting the team. Predator was written by brothers Jim and John Thomas in 1985, under the working title of Hunter. Filming began in April 1986 and creature effects were devised by Stan Winston

LV-426 was sure desolate and the films eventually tie into that planet Ati. So, we can both have our hopes up for more time in that type of environment and the technology needed to conquer it.

Here below is an example of early concept art from Prometheus: The Art of the Film, page 27, with another example for suits.

I would like to see some new landscape concept art like what Wayne Haag did for Alien: Covenant.

I felt the exact same way MonsterZero. If they only had enough money for a single movie with James Franco in it...then they would have filmed some of the content from prequel novel with him in it and then go back to the happenings around Paradise. I wish.

Great point, the juggernaut pilot's chamber was shown for just moments in Alien: Covenant.

Exactly! You hit the target.

And if we don't want to/don't have time to name fifteen genres to describe a movie/AC, we say it is a science-fiction horror.
