dk It's more of an impulse idea, which has no basis to be a troublesome idea. David and Wagner are an inevitable correlation, and so maybe it's just being aware of the inevitability that messes with the sense that Wagner was correct for the film, or music that's like Wagner. Peter Weyland is the bridge to Wagner, which explains Wagner in the film, but it's also a wonder if very different music could have been chosen for the film instead
Someone complained online it's an all female cast. Obviously they haven't read the book because that is how it is in the novel. I have a little complain about the casting of the guy who is interrogating Portman's character though. If he is who I think he is, they changed his ethnicity ( I can see why he was cast though since he's been in "Sunshine"); the original character is a mixed hispanic/white man and his cultural background is very important in the second novel.
Sensitive topic. I'm not brave enough to make a comment. :)
Awesome moustache! :)
---- You drank too much yesterday then you had sex with an android, but the next morning you have to face the fact that... It was Walter NOT David! --- Screeeam!!!
Sorry...Please forgive me. :)
Ati Yes, you are right. That is why I mentioned "Roadside Picnic", which is the novel Stalker is based on. By the way Jack Paglen, one of the writers of Alien Covenant created a series based on Roadside Picnic that has much more in common with Stalker than Annihilation.
'an expedition sent to a quarantined site known as Area X, which apparently has been object of some kind of alien invasion (not the typical alien invasion though)'
So it contains the main idea of the other well-known Tarkovsky movie, the Stalker, as well.
It should be good. I love Portman, her beauty is enough for me to enjoy a movie. :D
dk - 'I never associated the mouth with an anal sphincter until now. Now I cannot un think it lol!'
The same here. :)
Covenant will never be the same again for us! :D
Well I read the 3 books and I can tell you it is not a remake of Solaris. And there are so many things left unexplained in the first part that it is not unlikely to have a trilogy. On top of that, a secondary character from the first part becomes protagonist of the second and in the third you get the point of view of every character and a final conclusion. This is the type of novel that can fuel endless theories and discussions. It is really a mind-bending narrative, a whole thoroughly imagined world of its own. The first book focuses on what happened to an expedition sent to a quarantined site known as Area X, which apparently has been object of some kind of alien invasion (not the typical alien invasion though). The second part takes place in a facility known as Southern Reach, a bureaucratic nightmare of place where the protagonist of Annihilation is being studied; the main character here is the new director of Southern Reach. The last part of the trilogy is fascinating, it is like a puzzle where you get to know more less the final fate of every character, and maybe of earth. Oh and i forgot to say it is also very Lovecraftian.
Grimm I like where your head is with the TV Series idea but because of the graphic content and film nostalgia having the language , violence and themes and character elements it has as well as just needing a budget big enough to support special effects good enough for fans to appreciate and good enough to represent the species it would only work well on a HBO or Cinemax style format without that it would fall short of expectations both within TV and the universe itself HBO could work considering there relationship with Damon Lindelof having work with them as well as TV in general many times but it would probably go way of a miniseries and if it worked they could bring it back as needed and as it is welcomed kind of like the open reservation they have with Larry David and Curb Your Enthusiasm but it doesn't need to be a season after season situation
Yeah, it looks like a Solaris remake, I mean the original Solaris (1972) by Tarkovsky. Probably it will be too much for a wider US audience.
I think it won't be a franchise but Portman is beautiful in it.
joylitt Alex Garland is a fantastic writer!!
Sunshine, much like Alien is a perfect 10/10 for me
I too would have liked to see way more detail regarding the alien evolution, but I immensely enjoyed the David story. The poetry and flutes were absolutely awesome, though I'm not sure how many actors other than Michael Fassbender could have pulled it off even half as well. Remember, the android issue/story has been a key part of the Alien franchise since the very beginning. Exploration of the character of Ash was a central issue in Alien (1979), no less important (and interesting, I might say) than that of the endoparasitoid extraterrestrial species.
The android theme in Covenant actually reminded a bit of the andoid theme in Star Trek: Next Generation. In fact, in Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) Data meets his brother too, and only of them can survive.
Given the richness of the Alien universe and the many issues that could (and should) be explored, perhaps the only truly satisfactory solution would be a TV series -- rather like Star Trek. The movie format simply doesn't do justice to the detail (in terms of both width and depth) that Alien fans crave. With a weekly 45-minute instalment, so many avenues could be taken and parallel arcs investigated -- androids, xenomorphs, neomorphs, Engineers, other species visited by the Engineers, Weyland-Yutani, terraforming, ...
trokanmariel Please elaborate/clarify. I do not know what you mean.
The music of Wagner is logical for the film, as it fits with David being a villain, but, objectively I'm forced to speculate if Boys II Men or if Backstreet Boys or if Cheryl Lynn couldn't have been used instead to represent David
Spearfish Yes, exiting through the abdominal area has almost no resistance but..........SMH.............sometimes we just need to roll with it friend! I hear you!
Awesome designs, I really love them. Wish we could see even more and know it's been hinted that in the next film we're supposed to I guess go back and actually see what David did - oh that we could have spent more time learning what David was up to in Covenant rather then poetry classes and flute lessons - So much flute!
[*snickers* Sorry couldn't help myself lol BTW if interested & enjoy a good laugh, watch ScreenJunkies 'Honest Trailers' of Alien: Covenant. It's quite amusing lol. But I digress apologies!]
These are so interesting looking and from a scientific standpoint, sorry can't help it lol I'm a scientist, love seeing the evolution as it were of all phases of the xenomorph. Would love to see his attempts of a Queen.
I'm still a bit unclear, and hopefully one of you here can explain it better to me, of David's comment "Their waiting for Mother" - as I thought Shaw was "Mother"? We've got an egg so umm, there's a mother involved somewhere yes? Unless David is trying to present himself as being a sort of hermaphrodite in a way. Yes, I understand he's got a serious "God" complex and all of that and that he'd I guess been using Shaw's reproductive organs to achieve his "Mighty Works" but that in itself again goes back to Shaw = Mother. So yes, please, if someone could untangle that for me thank you so much in advance! Or is it he's just, obviously, off his rocker, so the comment is of no real significance. Oh, and yes I get the whole Ohram being "Mother" too - sort of, but why would he alter the protomorph later into a basically larval stage when here it comes forth fully developed?! Sorry, just one of the questions for me that sadly seemed to be lost on the editing room floor - like a lot of this movie unfortunately.
Ridley Scott is, has been, and will always be a kind of hero of mine. His movies have always intrigued me with a few exceptions - hey no one can knock it out of the park every time, I get that! However, of late he seems to have become lost on his "quests". He started out with a clear direction but took a left turn at "I've reached 80 and I'm asking the bigger questions all humanity does at this/some stage in our journey through life, the 'What comes next?!' questions.". Which now has been placed into the universe of Alien, awkwardly and inappropriately insofar as the cannon of this series.
For myself at least, the Xenomorph's have no concern of or for philosophical ponderings. They have and will always be neutral in that department which is why I feel they've appealed to so very many people - there's no undercurrent of religious motivations driving them, therefore no need for people to get caught up in biblical principles no matter what slant a person's takes. It's goals are primal, steadfast, and sterile - it's what makes them as Ash said, "the perfect organisms" because their only goal is continuation and safety of the hive, all acting as one towards one goal, the further propagation of the species - period. It's perfection lies in its beautiful simplicity, again at least for me. But, Scott really threw a curve ball when he decided to make it about "faith" and "God". Which to me only accomplished destroying the purity of the Xenomorph - by making it seem you could lift its foot and find a sticker with, for lack of a better term, 'Made In (Pick A Country - or Planet in this case)' stamped on it! So perhaps at least being able to see the evolution as it were of them would have filled in a lot of gaps and got things better on track.
Although admittedly, after watching two movies of quite possibly the dumbest scientists and crews in the history of imagined space travel I'm quite apprehensive about the next installment, at least as a scientist myself, being any better - yes, yes I know, Star Trek they didn't wear helmets either and very valid point but hey it was a TV show!
Here we're supposed to believe they'd just spent 8 - 10 years researching the galaxy for a liveable planet to colonize, found a pretty much perfect match, but missed one basically 10 miles down the road but found the one 8 light years away?!?! Then we're just going to skip on down there, with just a curseorary check of conditions from the shipboard computers, with no protective gear, frolic in a wheat field - that oh yeah shouldn't be there in the first place, while touching everything and sniffing EVERYTHING?!?! And I thought they were beyond stupid in Prometheus! Wow!
Again my apologies - I've gone WAY off track sorry! Oh and please know - These are just my thoughts, and in no way meant to imply there's anything wrong with Scott/anyone asking the bigger questions especially at this/that stage in life. We all do it. I'VE DONE IT! I was just talking in relationship to these movies we love so very much. Lady Anne ^^ö^^
The back burster is evolutionarily rediculous. Why go through the spine when the other direction is soft tissue. Sci fi departure for the sake of screen shock. Plus, if that thing was growing during their walk back to the lander, he would have been a paraplegic almost instantly based on the growth rate. Ridley is no doctor LOL.
Guard- Mess hall, most of them. (Mostly).
(Call leaves Ripley's cell and...)
Military personal surround Call and one hits her on the head. Wren is with them and speaks like he's just been violated, his teeth are grinding out the words, "I think you're gonna find that this was ill-advised."
Things get serious and Wren continues, "Where are her friends?"
Yeah I like the idea. I Just want them to be in the cosmic horror vein. Shoggoths versus the Old ones.
Something like Iain Banks Iln machine. Something all powerful, uncaring and horrific.
Another reason Covenant was a mistake. They should have followed Prometheus to explain all of this.
Snow would have been awesome! But that's a big cold headache for the cast and crew. I could see the cast vetoing that idea!
I wonder how accurate the english translation is. Even as a german it is quite the read.
I never associated the mouth with an anal sphincter until now. Now I cannot un think it lol!
Daniels
I do not pretend to read many threads here particularly those about monster design so this may have been dealt with but I haven't seen anyone deal with Daniels other than whether she tropes Ripley.
John Logan obviously tried to give her an emotional context as a survivor and Katherine, who is a very accomplished actress capable of nuance, played that grief well. Right up to the point when she recognised the silence of Paradise she was disquieted and gave a cohesive performance but from that moment on she was the bleary eyed, numbed, out of her depth widow who ends up doing a Matt Damon turn swinging around on the rescue ship. Thats not Katherine's fault but unlike Elizabeth who gathered herself through endless tragedy got it, knew what was happening and survived (that incidentally is why it is so crucial for us to know how matters changed after David was repaired) Daniels was constantly outwitted and never once said "Hold on one fucking moment whats going on here". Daniels was a golden opportunity to wind her in to the original plot "the search for our creators". She had lost her husband and she finds evidence of the crew who left on a mission to find her creators. Why did she not ask David once what they find on LV223, how they got to Paradise and why they went there. Reason because the story logic is wafer thin and is over burdened with getting David on board and the troped third act. Walter would be programmed with the Prometheus mission and as the surrogate husband of Daniels rejecting David's advances would have got ahead of David and worked it out. The third act could have been a tense and terrific stand off between David/Neomorph and Walter/Daniels having found out the truth of Elizabeth and the Engineers.
The final scene would be Tennessee bringing down the lander and being met by one robot and Daniels comatose. Completely enigmatic with the audience unaware that Daniels is fine but David has ingested embryos which can be revealed in flashback in the next movie but the key is right up until that final moment we are rooting for her having discovered the truth of the Engineers and Elizabeth and survived.
Those are just random thoughts but her character had to be our eyes and ears until the twist rather than what we got, the school teacher dealing with unfamiliar events and not sure how to react. The moment she became aware of Shaw's tags she and Walter should have been much more knowing rather than David's lambs.
god that's terrifyingly cute. Cool concept using a pillbug for inspiration.
I love movies and often go back to them this year my favourite go back to was "Brokeback Mountain" Heath Ledger was outstanding.
On rental new to me which really stood out were :-
"Manchester by The Sea" Casey Affleck study of repressed grief was outstanding.
"The Man Who New Infinity"
"The Girl On The Train"
In the sci fi category I loved "Arrival" a real surprise, real creativity at work whereas I thought Life was dull in the way Covenant was.
I found the first Ape remake fun but the second one a trial but may watch the third.
Rogue One was entertaining nothing more nothing less.
From the Boxed sets Homeland and Marcella were riveting and always on the edge performances from the central character.
Most recently on Netflix I watched "First They Killed My Father" a brilliant harrowing look at the Pol Pot years from a child's perspective and reinforced by shooting the movie from a small child's physical perspective.
Probably the most surprising film was "Embrace of the Serpent" a genuinely otherworldly study of amazonian shamanism and a distant relative of elements of Prometheus 'tinkering with the unexplained mysteries".
I am looking forward to Dunkirk on the Home Entertainment system and Bladerunner in the cinema. Reading others makes me want to consider Get Out and Logan.
@Cerulean Blue Thanks. I thought the same thing with the figure on the left. But she/he could be praying aswell. Still really fascinating stuff. Especially the figure on the right in the middle, I mean thats basically the representaion of God, white clothes, long white beard etc. But we have to keep in mind that this is just concept art, so who knows if the mural to the right is actualy in the movie. But i think it is given the fact that the figures on the entrance are in there. Theres just so much detail and care put in the movie that you dont see or realize in the time it flys by you.
That would make a fine chest burster.
The pillbug would have been cool, along with more details on the evolution of the xenomorph, but alas, 'Alien: Covenant' happened.
It's a bird...
It's a plane? No it's a flying xenomorph.

perhaps to keep up appearances.
Granted they are all asleep on Covenant and WY are aware. But perhaps only top level execs. Mission needs to be "on course" in the boardroom
In A:OotS they already introduced another old race, said to be "gone" but not extinct. Equally, if not even more advanced than the Engineers.
From the look of it (later novels) they manipulate other unaware (lesser) races to do their bidding while staying in the shadows. Wich makes them a mysterious, unseen and lurking threat.
I'd love to see them involved in future movies.
dk - I love those decades! Some of the cheesy sci-fi movies are my favs as well - because of the thing you mention.
The only thing I wonder about is what would compel a character to throw the thing...
