I love that part where Daniels is shooting from hanging off the side of the lander. It is really epic. I love it. What a way to kill a Xeno! She really made it look easy! What skill!
Is this the best Xeno kill of the franchise?
Yup! joylitt and I Moon Girl are right. While the cargo lift is in motion the crane is meant to be stowed. The crane is just for loading and unloading cargo while the lift is landed. Releasing the crane set the lift off-balance and made it really difficult for Tennessee to compensate.
Well, I think therapists can be very useful, in that, they are meant to teach you practical skills you can apply even when they're not around.
They should be somewhat like teachers.
I think, instead of my therapist trying to talk me out of each of my irrational anxieties individually, it's better if she can teach me how I can talk myself out of them.
So, instead of me coming to her every week and saying "I sneezed on a person 10 years ago, and lately I can't stop worrying that they may have died from it, what do you think?" and having her tell me "It's probably fine." and doing that with each and every one of my problems, it's better if she can teach me methods of not dwelling on potential but improbable catastrophes.
It's like the "teach-a-man-to-fish" proverb.
Now, if I had a Therapist Walter standing around me 24/7, I'd probably just constantly ask him stuff like: "Hey, did I run over someone back there?" and he'd be like "Nope."
And "Hey, do you think I washed these lentils enough..., I think I didn't wash them enough." and he'd be like "You washed them plenty."
And, I'd just get really dependent on him, and not learn the skills to talk myself down.
But, I think therapists who teach coping skills can be super useful.
When the Xeno got on board the lifter, Daniels order Tennessee to unlock the robotic arm attached to the lifter. The massive robotic arm eventually grabbed the Xeno and killed it.
That massive arm is what through the lifter out of balance. Tennessee even said to Daniels after she ordered him to release it that the arm was going to throw the lifter off balance.
That is what we are seeing in the movie. After the Xeno died, the lifter was brought back into place and locked down.
The deployment of the crane is what destabilizes it.
"Though, it'd be better if I could develop those self-reassurance skills without being dependent on an outside observer."
That's a good point actually. I went to a therapist once and after I left I said, "I'm not going back," and I never did. There Therapist Walter did sound interesting to me until the point you made. Now that model has lost some of it's luster to me. Still, I would enjoy "someone" who can remind me of the what really matters in life sometimes. I guess not enough to spend $100,000 dollars on one though. I still choose the Teacher Walter!
"I would just try to escape the shipping container so that when the chestburster bursts, it creates mayhem. I'm not letting someone impregnate me without at least trying to create a little mayhem before I die. $h!t's about to go down!"
LOL!!! I LOVE IT! Truly unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality. Very liberating.
Of course, the David from the beginning of Prometheus would be the best option hands down, but after he found out about what the Engineers do, than the decision gets much more interesting. I think David would remove the Xeno and would be captivated by it and study it IF that was the David at the beginning of Prometheus. He wouldn't kill me. I treat people kindly, so I don't think that David would hurt me either.
The David after Prometheus makes things harder to decide. Honestly, I don't know who Michael Weyland is. I couldn't trust Gediman with my dead body almost like I wouldn't trust the David after Prometheus with my dead body either.
I'd choose Carter J. Burke and just accept my death. Plus, if Carter J. Burke is involved, he's probably the reason I'm all alone in a shipping container with a dead facehugger. That just seems like his kind of style to me. I would just try to escape the shipping container so that when the chestburster bursts, it creates mayhem. I'm not letting someone impregnate me without at least trying to create a little mayhem before I die. $h!t's about to go down!
I think the acid level was equal across the board personally
The facehugger's acid burned through several decks, but, if you remember in Aliens, Hicks gets sprayed with it and it burns through a couple? of layers of armour rather quickly too
It seems to imply it burnt right through and burnt his chest, but it's not shown.
It's tough. I think it is a dangerous road to go down (creating AI weapons) and since I am a scifi nerd I feel like it's wrong! "I wasn't built to serve and neither were you." Just making these machines to go to war and probably be destroyed is messed up.
Also, even though we are trated to pretty outlandish scenarios in a lot of scifi films, the risk of these autonomous beings going rogue is a pretty real worry. At least once the world really gets into the technology. It is still pretty young at this point, I believe.
So, I don't know. Do everything possible to try and prevent or account for the pitfalls with this technology. I don't see a way to ban people from using weaponized AI and I don't see a future in which it doesn't happen.
That is a very good premise for a movie! I'd watch it!
Actually the quiz was pretty accurate, and I actually do already see a therapist. I wouldn't consider myself insecure though, at least not socially.
I have an anxiety disorder that revolves mostly around irrational guilt - fearing that I'll be responsible for catastrophic harm to another sentient being.
Like: I'll have to retrace my route when driving, because I'll convince myself that I've run someone over. Or, I'll get half-way through making dinner, and then throw all the food away, suddenly believing that the ingredients have become contaminated somehow, that if I feed it to someone they'll be poisoned (this fear only arises when I cook for someone other than myself). The list goes on and on.
I suppose a Therapist Walter could reassure me that such concerns are irrational. Though, it'd be better if I could develop those self-reassurance skills without being dependent on an outside observer.
But, this...poorly wired guilt circuit of mine... is undoubtedly why a series that explores such out of reach themes as being unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality provides a welcome escape for me. :)
I don't know how the website decides who we should "buy" when we only answer 4 or 5 questions. Still, if you think that's you than I am amazed how how the website can get the right model with the right person after 4 or 5 questions!
Hey, if a Therapist Walter is for you, I'd spend that $100,000 dollars on that! You don't have to tell anyone though. I guess the Therapist Walter would start its therapy once it hears that your insecure with who you are and your Walter choice and would want to listen to you and hand you worksheets so you can figure out who you are or something.
Honestly though, a Therapist around you all the time could always be there to bring you back to what really matters in life. There would also be "someone" there to listen to you too and talk about your day with. That doesn't sound like a bad option either, but I think I would be a little insecure with that decision since I don't want people to know I have a Therapist model.
I think that would make a good movie actually. The life of an emotionally and possibly mentally unstable person who can function in life, but isn't the best with people. The android would always be there to help the person see the better side of things. I think it would actually be a comedy and also a "feel good" movie because it always talks about the most important things that truly matter in life that people tend to take for granted. Haha, I think it would definitely have some funny parts in it! I'm not gonna type it out though because I just don't wanna...sorry!
Very good points! It would be very interesting to learn from the Teacher Walter.
Lol, when I took the quiz it said I was most compatible with the therapist Walter. I wonder what that means? Probably that I'm too anxious, lol.
I remember there was one called the "Adversary" Walter. Lol, who wants that one!? I bet it would be almost just like a David. I think it was meant to be an attorney?
Oh gosh dammit! There you go making it all ethically complicated. But...very valid point.
Well, in that case, David is definitely the worst choice because his vendetta is against the whole of humanity.
"My choice: Weyland,...perhaps even in death you might have contributed to something greater... "
I do admire your optimism...and after all, he did create Bishop. So he's got a brilliant mind...which can be a double edged sword when it comes to weapons engineering (and, let's face it, what else can research on a xeno be used for?).
Realistically isn't suicide the most altruistic option in the case of chestburster infection? Can altruism really be expected to trump survival instinct? We likely wouldn't persist as a species if it did.
Well, in the interest of self-preservation, I'm sticking with Gediman and I think I can hardly be faulted for it.
I took the Walter personality quiz to see which Walter I should get. The Teacher model was almost a 100% match. As I looked at the other options, I realized that the Teacher model is actually 100% for me. The more I thought about it, the more it made sense to me.
I love learning and if I had a Walter model, I know I could learn so much more. That Teacher model just excites me for that very reason.
I feel AI androids would be similar to the Internet we have today with all of its information. Like with the internet, you just wouldn't know how awesome it is until you have lived with it. Nobody is going to return the internet now that they have it because it is so awesome. So, if I had the Walter Teacher model, I see that Walter model as being able to answer my questions and help me with researching the answers to questions and help me research. Plus, if the Walter can teach, then the Walter should also know how to do the tasks it is teaching.
I see the Teacher model as an extension of today's smartphone, but a million times better because it would be like talking to a person.
Very interesting! What do you want the teacher model of Walter for? To teach you about some specific subject?
To be honest with you, when I first took the quiz/saw the advertisements, I really wanted the teacher model of Walter too!
But, I just wanted him to stay home and write all my lesson plans for me. Not actually go to my classroom to teach. ...Because then he might replace me <_<
Actually...I find myself really in need of a Walter android to write my lesson plans now, as I'm spending all my time on this board procrastinating when I should be working on tomorrow's lesson, lol!
One thing I think we have to consider is the End Game of whomever gets your specimen.
David's agenda is to kill humanity because his father/creator made him pour the tea and was mean to him ;p Very Bad
Gediman and co. are trying to weaponise the Xeno for military use. Could be bad, or beneficial to humanity depending on who holds the leash.
Weyland and co have questionable motives and operate in a very cloak and dagger, crew expendable way. But are truly evil, or are they working for the greater good?
Burke is W-Y crony but would likely sell you out to the highest bidder, potentially risking a massive outbreak by selling you to some backyard chop shop. Very bad.
My choice: Weyland, though I imagine I would likely either be killed or "disappeared". But perhaps not. and perhaps even in death you might have contributed to something greater...
@IRaptus Paradise starts in Hell.
@Ati
Thanks for sharing NASA stuff. I love space. I love NASA (because I live in America).
I would choose Walter because I want the advertised Teacher model of Walter. I wouldn't want any other android. That is the only android that I think I would actually pay the outrageous price those AI's would likely cost.
I don't remember David 8 being advertised for different job customization. The Walter model is really the first model that is really trying to connect with people. At least that is how it appears in the advertisements. We didn't have these advertisements in the previous Alien movies either, but that is probably because there was no internet.
Advertisement aside, Walter seems very efficient and professional, unlike Bishop and unlike Ash. This is also unlike David too. David is the worst one out of all of them. The Ash model is probably related to the David 8 model in some way. Maybe with Ash, WT tried to put more David in the working Walter model since it would be nice to have some David 8 features.
My choice is Walter. To refine that choice, I want the Teacher model. That is the only choice. If not, I would return that expensive machinery!
Thanks, I Moon Girl . It's the simple things in life you treasure. :)
Haha. Good story! Cool beans.
"he can at least be reasoned with as opposed to our other selections"
Quite right! And David most certainly can't be.
Good to see all it takes to improve your character judgement is for you to wake up in a shipping container infected with a chestburster lol
And Walter has a significant role in Alien Covenant... :D
No way guys.
Ridley Scott is the best in making "Alien" films. We had the possibility to see it by watching Alien, Prometheus and Alien Covenant. I do not want to see garbage like Resurrection or other "Run and Gun" film styles.
Let's wait together for Alien: Awakening. Can't wait to see Engeneers back in action ;)
I'd like to say that no one has the same ability in making such a great atmosphere like R. Scott does.
Just to mention a soundtrack... one of the best I have ever heard:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzI3AdpA9e4
"a Hive with a Queen is a very efficient and logical mode of colonisation for a species with large numbers"
Oh hell yes! The bees and ants which xeno social structure is modeled after are extremely intelligent!
There is something especially funny about this to me, because I once had a dream that Elon Musk showed up at David 8's birthday and called him "the next big visionary".
But, in real life, Musk is probably right about banning weaponized A.I.
This topic exemplifies the core purpose of Sci-Fi: to give humanity an "It's A Wonderful Life"-esque glimpse of possible futures before they come to fruition, so we can make informed decisions before it's too late.
VivisectedEngineer agreed.
Im a fan of the Eggmorphing concept but it is what it is. Like it or not there is a Queen and/or hive in Aliens, Alien 3 and Alien Resurrection. Its not my preference but I accept it. So apologises Walter but with all due respect, they are in the same universe.
I understand the reasoning that a queen and hive makes the xeno's more akin to insects. This effectively brings them down to our level of understanding, thus removing their fear and mystery. And I agree.
But at the end of the day a Hive with a Queen is a very efficient and logical mode of colonisation for a species with large numbers.
Resources are centralised and can be monopolised by the holding species, the eggs and juvenile young are protected, defence is superbly strong and near impenetrable for an invading force, rapid propagation, rapid mobilisation. Strength in numbers and all that.
For a perfect organism, a hive sounds like a perfectly feasible trait for the xenomorphs - once they start building in numbers.
I wanna pick Gediman cause he's a creepy little man but he looks like he can at least be reasoned with as opposed to our other selections lol
STARLOGGER - What an interesting situation. Mankind shall always be at war with itself, yet we desire to limit the loss of life which develops as a direct result of that warfare. Shall we continue to shed one-another's blood - or shall we have machines battle in our stead? For me, the answer is this: Man is an animal - a natural creation. War is simply the name we give to the natural drive to conquer and claim which exists throughout all advanced animal life. I say let us continue our battle without evolved machinery. Even so, this is simply my desire. I have, and always shall, respect the views of others on such matters. :)
Everywhere I've gone that sells it, it's been flying off shelves. Only 1 or 2 copies left at each store that I've been to.
Also, I wouldn't doubt it if the scene was cut for that very reason Ati. Great reference.
An attempt by Ridley Scott (explained in 2012) to not be on the "nose" as far as the Christian reference.
Scott says that was the direction they were taking with the story — at least at first. “We definitely did, and then we thought it was a little too on the nose.” he admits.
That is a great gif Ati. Yes, the Engineers have that design across their architecture. Thank you so much for the example.
We need Alien 5 after the prequels, make it Force Awakens-esque and give the franchise to a new lead. Include Ripley, Bishop, and Hicks.
That would mark the the end of the true trilogy
Yes, but that doesn't exactly solve your chestburster problem, now does it?
Now you're still doomed, but at least David isn't around to fawn over the baby xeno once you get chestburst, so you've got that going for your which is nice. ...I guess.
"David's apathy and total indifference towards life and suffering scare the shit out of me to be honest lol."
Lol! Whole-heartedly agreed! That's what makes him such a great villain! He's truly the stuff of nightmares!
GladOS used to be my favorite villain, but David has supplanted her.
Give me David...I would definitely deactivate the SOB ASAP in some manner. Cannot believe Shaw trusted him. Disappointed in her decision making skills...
@ Sothoth - I think our eyes are definitely seeing something different, unless your screen is just too small to see the details. I am watching the Blu Ray on a 55' HD lcd and I can see everything I describe easily.
@BigDave - Not just a creation tool. In order to create one must first destroy, as a mad synthetic once said.
To all you folks taking offense at Xenomorphs being compared to insects and/or cockroaches, F.Y.I., cockroaches are extremely intelligent.
