From what I have seen and heard, there are two ships in the film, the "Prometheus" and the "Magellan". I wonder if the "Magellan was sent first but never returned and thus, the "Prometheus" is sent out. Perhaps the company sent out the first ship for first contact but contact was lost with their first exploration. Or there were underlying secrets of the missions, that were never told to the crew with the exception of the planted seeds (androids, human), like in "Alien" with Ash. Just throwing this out there.

Can also be that the magellan ( or the prometheus ) are what the Narcissus was for the Nostromo . So they can be both part of the same spacecraft .

it was written over one of the vehicles on the set "The prop is marked 'Magellan mess deck', which indicates that there may be more than one human space ship present in Prometheus "

Right, the Magellan could be the smaller ship and the Prometheus the mother ship but perhaps was the first ship sent and it never came back from it's mission. It was lost as the public knew but secretly it sent back a transmission the company kept in the dark and thus, the Prometheus is sent to investigate. The Magellan would have the concordance, a beacon sort of where it disappeared off the map.

I agree. I am going on the theory that this ship is a sister ship. Going out together or went out prior to the Prometheus.

What if Prometheus was not the name of a ship, but was a character instead?

can be also the name of the mission ...btw there are some fonts that say that could be the name of the ship ..one was ""And the ship, which I am told is the current titles name, Prometheus"" this ...

I'm with Cain1977's first Idea... I'm thinking that the Magellen is maybe the transport or carrier vessel for the Prometheus 'mission vessel' that maybe a large 'lander craft'.
