their will be 2 versions....i am almost certain!....but the toned down one will come first and the re release (more hardcore and explicit version) will feature in selected 3d theaters upon the dvd release....well that's my guess?

i agree mekja....the pg13 rating is a big concern for me, you and Ridley...and I am sure just about anyone on this forum....i want explicit violence, sex, horror and very disturbing subject matter.....not to mention some harsh language....but we will hopefully get that once they release the directors cut....hopefully!

half an hour of extra footage?....nah if we lucky....maybe an extra 7 or 8 minutes...those precious extra minutes can make a huge difference tho!

It's fascinating how the studio will ignore the fanbase to please a special interest when it comes to mangling a good movie. We have the power to choose yes or no, so release art as it was meant to be experienced. It's funny to see when they tweak a movie to grab a larger audience and it fails miserably. This is easy money for the studio, so hopefully they'll piss off on this on and let us see Ridleys's true vision. Hopefully!

I seriously doubt there will be two differently rated versions of the same film released at the same time. From a parent's perspective, I would imagine that could open up the liability door for Fox to get a lawsuit.
People are just that screwed up...
I can imagine some pathetic woman wants monetary compensation for the counselor visits her kid gets, because she gave him permission to see a film that she thought was PG-13, when in fact he saw the R version- and he was "injured" by what he saw...
If it's released PG-13, then I fear the R-rated version won't be available until the BD release.

i agree, a pg-13 alien would just not feel right even if there are no xenos. look at how AvP turned out, it broke my suspension of disbelief all the time because of things like the CB with no blood. how is that even possible? if something burst out of your chest there would be blood and guts every where, but they had to cut it so younger kids could see it. but i guess thats ok because that movie was not that good anyways. also how can it be rated pg-13? just from the trailer we can see people mutating and covered with blood and acid to the face, it looks like they would need to cut a lot to make it not R. but it really should be R just for the sake artistic vision. really all movies should get the R approval and then they can re-rate it after its finished because having that freedom to do whatever you want artistically will usually end in a better movie. how good would alien be without its visionary idea of the alien and its evolutionary process, not to mention its obvious sexual symbolism? not very good, let me tell you.

I think the last time both R and 13 versions of a film were shown simultaneously was for Saturday Night Fever - the ratings being X and A certificate respectively. Tbf the A version of that movie is as good as the original X cut, just minus explicit language and the gang rape scene.
There's no reason why both versions of Prometheus can't be shown simultaneously either. Would really storm the box office I reckon. Ridley has stated he's making 2 cuts, we all know he wants the R, and hopefully this will be the version they first release.

I will chime in with the proverbial, "who cares what rating it gets?" and just hope for a good movie. Alien would most assuredly have been a PG-13 film if released today and it is scary as can be. If it is a good movie, it is good no matter what rating it gets.

i wish Scott would push the envelope and some buttons and go for an
extreme R, or better yet, the dreaded "NC-17". not likely he'd go for
the latter, but i can't recall the last time i saw a sci-fi film with that
particular controversial rating
i just hope that if Scott must bend to the studio heads and have
a PG-13 rating, i hope that he releases an R rated version as well
i think it's WE who need to determine what is acceptable
in this regard and NOT the moronic "film ratings board"
time will tell.....

miser, alien would not be pg-13 if it came out today exactly the same. there is to much blood to begin with and on top of that they say "fuck" way to much, you can only say fuck in a pg-13 movie twice, and that's if the rest of the movie wasn't violent at all. just saying. but you are right, as long as the movie is good it does not matter but that's what i am saying, its not the blood and sex that makes some R movies better, its because they are better because they had the freedom to make the movie they wanted and not a cut down version.

This is a no brainer. PG-13. It's all about the money. Wider audience range, more guaranteed bucks...

I would think it probably depends more on language usage over violence and gore with a movie like Prometheus. The requirement for an R-rating is if it uses the F-bomb 1 to 4 times as an expletive. If it's used in a sexual context, it's only allowed about once maybe twice. This is mainly at the judgement on the MPAA; they may be willing to make some exceptions here and there.

to me it is NOT a no brainer because of this...
If i am one of FOX's favorite demographic, that is a 13-19 year old teen angst filled sci-fi nerdy type male...
Am I more drawn and attracted to a film that is 14 and over or one that is PG13???
Think about it...
Cause a PG13 rating does in no way ensure more people are going to the theater to see your movie...but a 14+ rating almost always does!!!

the only good thing that can come out of it being pg-13 is that it will introduce the story and movies to a new younger audience. but besides that it would probably be better if they gave it the Right of way. did you get it? did you get it? i did like a thing with the R lol i am stupid :)
