MemberOvomorph12/29/2011Does anyone feel that after seeing Prometheus, the powerful mystery enjoyed in Alien will be destroyed, and one can never enjoy the film the same way ever again?
Sometimes explaining and exposing too much can ruin the enjoyment.
This is why Alien is my favourite film. This, plus the aesthetic and musical qualities. Strangely, I never saw it as a horror movie, I was never scared by it, I truly regard it was a piece of artistic brilliance in film.
As petulant as it sounds, I do not want these mysteries destroyed! Sometimes ignorance can be bliss (well, for fiction anyway, not real life).
I'm hoping Scott will stick to his word, that this isn't a 'prequel' strictly speaking but an exploration/background to things (hopefully not influencing events/things heavily in the first film). If done right, this film would be a welcome addition to the Alien canon. If not, I can never enjoy this film ever again (think I'll read the synopsis when the film's out and decide that way and save my money from going to the pictures, that or just try and ignore the whole thing and pay attention to other things happening in the world like the Euros or Olympics).
I'm also getting pretty sick to death of the media overhyping it as a prequel while Ridley stated explicitly in an interview that it was not.
Thoughts?
(edit: I'm not a 'hater', just expressing concern, that is all)

MemberOvomorph12/29/2011i understand where you are coming from. you make a valid point.
ALIEN is one of my most very favorite films,
and when i read that Scott was going to do a sequel / prequel,
i was a bit un-nerved to read that. he's tampering with something
i hold V E R Y sacred to me
then finding out that the story of PROMETHEUS kinda closes the circle in regards
to the relationship the human species has to the space jockey, so in that regard, i do
feel there is a sense of Scott shattering my perceptions of all things ALIEN
at the same time,
(i feel) Cameron and all the rest did their very best to chip away at the integrity
of ALIEN, which REALLY bothered me, i'm not a fan of 'Aliens" and all the rest..
so for Scott to (in his own way) set things aright with this new film,
i'm hoping that in spite of the fact that some of the mystery i now feel for the what i
saw in ALIEN, is a mixed blessing for me. but what's done is DONE. the ball is rolling,
and i hope that it rolls all over me with some really great / fresh / exciting / fantastical
ALIEN inspired lore
i too was not scared of ALIEN when i saw it,
for me, it above all else, was a cool looking science fiction film to me,
it was suspenseful to me, but never "scary" or "horrific"
go figure.....

MemberOvomorph12/29/2011IMO... its not a direct prequel but will explain almost all the questions of Alien

MemberOvomorph12/29/2011A good magician never ever gives away all his secrets. He merely illustrates a part of the whole while creating the illusion of deeper mysteries.

MemberOvomorph12/30/2011Still surprises me to see hate for Aliens. People like to take cheap shots at it but never offer up solutions as to what they would have done for the second film. Aliens was the perfect response to the events in Alien. Exactly what we would do even today...send in grunts armed to the teeth.

MemberOvomorph12/30/2011Alien's my favourite. Aliens is ok, Alien 3 is ok, after that I ignore.

MemberOvomorph12/30/2011Hybrid I dont get the Aliens haters either, just because Alien is a masterpiece it doesnt mean you have to constantly berate the sequel. Its like calling your wifes sister ugly just because she's your sister in law :-) For me, if Alien is about style, Aliens is about substance. The sheer amount of concepts the film introduces is enough to merit its standing.
Anyway.... will Prometheus ruin the mystery of Alien? Possibly. But if its never made we'll never know. I remember when Lord of The Rings was being produced, I was horrified of what would be done to some of my favorite books. I felt that the books being translated to film would leave no more room for imagination or long periods of thought regarding the content of the book. Turns out Jackson did alright and I enjoyed the films, never reads the books since though!

MemberOvomorph12/30/2011The way I look at it is that if Prometheus is any good then I will acknowledge it as canon, if it turns out to be a piece of crap, I will simply deny it as being anything to do with Alien.
I mean, we're already doing it: some of us accept as gospel the entire Alien/Predator universe and their interleaving; others are happy to go as far as the "Quadrilogy"; some of us accept the first three only; while there are some who only consider Alien as a standalone film and universe.
So the beauty is we can pick and just, and most times we will not be in a minority. You need only take a look at the Star Wars franchise; there are some fans who literally deny the three prequel films out-of-hand. And that's OK!

MemberOvomorph01/1/2012The grunts in aliens could have saved themselves a lot of bother if they went into the situation armed to the teeth with a couple of gallons of cockroach killer lol.

You have my sympathy
MemberOvomorph01/8/2012I'm afraid that started with Aliens when the creatures life cycle, so unknown and mysterious, was relegated to that of an insect. From something that was wholly alien and very unsettling, James Cameron managed to make the "bugs" so very easy to kill, from a single creature that out-thought it's human victims to a dumbed down mindless cricket.
I think Ridly Scott will want to get away from any link to Aliens, 3 and Resurrection and relaunch the ALIEN with, hopefully, a Scott produced back-story now requires to undo the damge done to the legend by those 3 miscreants.

Veteran MemberMemberOvomorph01/8/2012I don't know...I wouldn't minding knowing why the goo on the eggs was dripping upwards when Kane entered the cargo hold. Or even what clawed it's way through the floor in the space jockey chamber? I think there is so much mystery in regards to the derelict itself that there are many avenues/portals one could go through and not have any of those mysteries expounded but new ones created! Like why we shouldn't kill aliens!

Spartacus
MemberOvomorph01/8/2012I know the answer to the goo question.
Ridley Scott told me On the commentary of the Quadrilogy Box Set...
He said.."Spartacus, this is for you...I did that for effect...I thought it looked cool and would freak people out, so I filmed the Eggs upside down."
Actually I think there was more to it like the physical space and set up for the shot/scene was done in a way that he had no choice but to film it upside down, but when they all noticed the effect on the dripping liquid on the EGG, they agreed it had to stay in, the effect was just to awesome, or something like that. As a matter of fact if memory serves I think they had a guy laying there with an eye-dropper constantly bathing the egg in liquid so as to be sure that upside down effect was clearly noticeable!!!
