MemberOvomorph01/23/2012Hey guys, begins by congratulating them for forming this pleasant community. I must say, I love this page and I still long. It continuare saying that my fanaticism for the work of Sir Ridley Scott and Hans Ruedi Giger is only equaled by the work of the great Howard Phillips Lovecraft.

It is obvious that there are certain parallels or general concepts present in prometheus and at the mountains of madness:
1) in both stories we see a group of explorers and scientists immersed in a journey of discoveries and revelations that change the scientific, religious and philosophical vision of being human and its role in the universe. Here is where the terrifying truth is revealed.

2) in both stories our dear players you will find answers to all the paradigms and transcendental mysteries in ancient structures designed by an alien entity.

3) in both stories will see alien gods which gave rise to life on Earth and also created other creatures. In one are engineers and on the other are the elder things. (also known as the old ones)

4) in both stories will see the monster created through genetic engineering. in one we will see the missing link of the xenomorph, possibly intended as a biological weapon; and on the other we have the shoggoths. The shoggoths are not biological weapons, but play the same role in "Monster" devours men. in fact the race of the elder things was consumed mostly by the monstrosities that created. Also most likely that the Necronomicon of Giger was influenced by the HP lovecraft.

and finally a question that has already been discussed repeatedly on this page:
is there something more dangerous and terrifying than humans, xenomorphs or engineers?

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012I love "At the Mountains of Madness"! I am sure there will be a few nods to the story in Prometheus.

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012I'm a big fan of Lovecraft, but also trust in Ridley and the work he is doing, no doubt his story shine with their own light. It is a fact that we will not see the xenomorph and the first classical movie in the same way. By the way thanks for commenting... and excellent page.
Best regards

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012I like the parallels made and just read the wiki synopsis of the plot. Thanks for introducing to me a new book to read.

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012Thanks ZetaReticuli, yes If it seems a giant chestbuster, as if he had been born of a space jockey. Wath I found by acciedente with the name snake alĂen, very grotesque and cool at the same time...

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012Shambhala, great analysis of the link between Prom and AtMoM. Alien has often been labelled as "Lovecraftian", something which which was abandoned for the sequels (although Aliens had a pretty cool "Beowulf"-inspired thing going on, with the Queen standing in for Grendel's mother).
I've been hoping Prom will be appropriately Lovecraftian, so let's see if it happens!
BTW, that pic of the diver coming face-to-face with Cthulhu is insane! Where'd you happen to find it?
Here's my favorite depiction of Big C who could fit into the Alien universe pretty easily, IMO (right click/view image, then left click to enbiggen):

Also, cool avatar. ;)

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012Robotpo; Yes, the Queen is the mother of the monster, as in the epic poem of Beowulf. Curiously Ripley played that role in Alien Resurrection.
The face to face between the diver and Cthulhu I found it looking for wallpapers but here is a link to photobucket:

Your image of Cthulhu this very good, It has the aesthetic to the Alien Universe.
danrald, certainly I found interesting show the parallel between these two great works of horror science fiction, and thank you for your comment.

MemberOvomorph01/24/2012@Shambhala, likewise enjoyed your insight and points. HPLovecraft is either a conscious (for Giger certainly) or indirect inspiration. (He would have been a great scriptwriter if he was around now!).

MemberOvomorph01/26/2012This illustration of Cthulhu does remind me of Space Jockey in his healthier days:

MemberOvomorph01/26/2012Well H.R. Giger's work has been synonymous with H.P. Lovecraft. It's interesting to know that often H.R. Giger is inspired by his night terrors. There's a darker side to all of this that I wish not to venture into. I will just enjoy the movie as just a movie.

MemberOvomorph01/26/2012very good image, apparently elephants are not the only who can aspire to resemble a jockey... lol... the cephalopods have some advantage...

MemberOvomorph01/27/2012Shambhala, woah! I never thought about the similarities between the Space Jockey and the Hindu god Ganesha. I wonder if it gets a mention in the movie?
Also, although this may not be appreciated, I couldn't help but notice that Cthulhu must have been an inspiration for Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean:

Absolutely
But in the PIRATES movies, Davy Jones turn out to be a Demi God who has exceeded & abused the limits of his power....

This is a ink drawing I did last year in about 25 minutes on a 5X8 sketech book, so it is about the same size on the screen. It is cybernetic space jockey inspired with a lemon twist of Lovecraftian Cthulhu. I am intending on painting it VIA computer but I have absolutely no experience with that. So it's going slow...Though I can paint. This inspiration was enlightened upon my creative urges when I learned about SIR Ridley Scott making the Alien prequel which became Prometheus. I hope to finish painting it by the end of the count down to the showing of this movie and put it up. I can't wait to see our Space Jockey get wired into the telescopic control apparatus cryogenic capsule thingy. So exciting!

MemberOvomorphMar-11-2012 4:45 AMInteresting post.... Like it... Shame at the mountains of madness did not get the green light but apparently Guillermo del torro still has hopes for it at a later time as he has done so much work on it already.... So keeping fingers crossed on that one emerging a bit later on.
Perhaps they felt it was too much to have 2 big budget films of this nature release the same year and have decided to spread them apart for now revisit the script again later the whole design conceptual phase was completed though I believe for ATMM

Co-AdminMemberOvomorphMar-11-2012 5:46 AMIn answer to your question Shambhala, I've been saying that there is something else worse than the Engineers and the Alien pretty much the whole time. Something that we have no idea about because Sir Ridley is keeping it so close to the chest. ;-)

MemberOvomorphMar-11-2012 11:14 PMThanks @Ronster and yes, indeed was a total disappointment and a shame what happened to ATMM, but still I have hopes that in the future given the green light to this epic project.
But Prometheus will be a great movie that is sure to set the tone for future filmmakers, a true masterpiece, an icon of science fiction and horror like Alien.

MemberOvomorphMar-11-2012 11:33 PM@Cypher Yes, Ridley has many hidden surprises up his sleeve. But my point is speculative to draw parallels between Prometheus and ATMM I thought that the Space jockeys are not the major gods of the plot. I was thinking that maybe the SJ are creations like humans and Xenomorphs. In the Elder Things ATMM gods are creators of life on Earth, but at the same time we have to Cthulhu, a terrifying and monstrous God who led a war against the Elder Things. Then it occurred to me that perhaps there may be an entity Prometheus worse or more powerful than the Space Jockeys, ie the true Engineers, those who are moving the pieces on the chess board for their dark purposes. But I'm just speculating, of course.
