MemberOvomorph01/23/2012Couldn't find this in a Google search, not sure if it's been discussed. My apologies in advance if it has.
There are 4 SJ suits in the hall with Shaw, not just 2. Look above Shaw's head in the enhanced photo in this link:

Filmophilia-Here is an excerpt from Ridley Scott's discussion, "Therefore, who is that, inside that [Space Jockey] suit? That wasn’t a skeleton, that was a suit. And if you open up the suit, what do you get inside it? And why were they going, where were they going?"
I suppose it's as good a place to store the boimechanical suits as any. (Reminds me of a castle with suits of armor in the halls). Do the suits in the hallway already have sleeping occupants? Unlikely since there are what appear to be stasis chambers in the SJ room already. So if the suits are empty, where will their occupants come from?
If the SJ (humanoid) shown in the trailer by the empty chair is too small to reach the chair's controls, will he be able to once he's inside the much larger suit?
How many stasis chambers are there vs. how many "survivors" (and I use that word loosely) from Prometheus?

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012I think you are right Db, I was looking between Shaw's arm and body, just above the pouch on her belt, you can just make out part of a base similar to the one opposite.
If they are environmental suits, then a hallway would be as good a place as any to store them and two sets give symetry.
Be a bit cramped if four SJs' tried to change into the suites at the same time though.

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012I bet they´re not suits but statues.
Someone here in the forum put a small image of the big head chamber scenario, it seems that there are two giant hands at the entrance gate.
So we have: Big Head, Hands at the Gates, Four SJ at the corridors.
Seems to me SJ´s civilization is adept of heavy statuary. Not unheard of, if you ever have seen the "Ridleygrams" for the pyramid in "Alien", that was not shoot because the Fox suits don´t baked the budget.

Yes, it certainly would be cramped in such a case.
I'll admit I was a bit disappointed when Ridley announced they were suits. There was something about the grotesque mystery of that thing in the chair being a unique species all its own... void of human conscience, etc, etc...
But if a mutated human (human size-ish) were to open and enter (or get consumed by?) one of those biomechanical suits after sampling the food of the gods... well, it might be a little less cramped? (At least inside). "We become the invading organism... (take that chestburster).

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012Despite the Greeks and Romans, Earthling´s statuary often depicts persons with clothes...even armor. :)
So, to imagine that the four SJ´s are statues of people with suits isn´t a stretch of imagination...

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012"there are two giant hands at the entrance gate" to the chamber with the big head? I havn't seen those - anybody got a picture they can post?

RickK
MemberOvomorph01/23/2012I got a feeling those 4 things in the pics are statues. Reason being, Shaw isn't wearing a helmet so I think this scene is from the temple or whatever discovered on earth - and being a temple these Jockey's / engineers were probably worshipped as gods & you'd expect statues/idols to be all over the place. Just what I think anyway...

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012@ RickK
That might also explain the gumboots...cause surely real jockeys won't wear those...it's always been the one very unsettling thing about that pic....those gum boots!

RickK: Why does Shaw need a space suit on earth (helmet or not)?
I think maybe the atmosphere is breathable at this point, (or she's begun to mutate)?
Good point about them being statues... they do love their sculpts...
Perhaps the chair engulfs the engineer (victim) with the suit? Therefore creating a trapped occupant and no escape? Sucks to be him/her. A "dead"-end career perhaps?

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012@ pjr,
Sadly, I can´t find that thread just now, but I downloaded the pic _ it´s very small. I´ll try to upload it here later, it´s in my home computer.

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012Here's hoping that "space jockey = Suit" is a RED HERRING ,
totally agree that it's a disappointing idea.
it's way more 'alien' to have a conscious pilot being that grew out of the ship, way more in keeping with alien's body-horror theme and way more like biotech taken to taken to an extreme.

Agree 100%... trying to make the best of a (potentially) disappointing situation.
Gotta' trust the man in charge. He's never let down... yet.

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012I think whatever the space jockeys are be it a suit or some enormous creature/ life form or some bio mechanical jack device for the engineers wont matter if the film is compelling and Believable , the interesting thing is the intelligence behind them and the motives they have thats the intriguing bit for me just what sort of creature are they, what kind of alien species travels in this manner, and are they the creators and destroyers of life and who created them ?

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012centaurian - I follow your "SJ is a suit"-fear, especially because "Alien" really didn´t imply that. On the other hand, if Ridley decides something was "hidden" inside, I´d love to see what it looks like. Maybe it´s blue, big and looks like an idealized human being with sharp features and a biomechanical back ;-)

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012At first, the idea of the SJ, as we know him in 'Alien', being a suit bothered me.....it got under my skin a little, just like everybody else, and then it began to simmer in the back of my mind, ultimately growing on me a little, and only because...one, we still don't know what the hell is supposed wear that thing to begin with...two, the simple idea that it's a suit makes you wonder even more the kind conceptual state of mind of its creators. What kind of thought process and thus, living thing, envisions that as a viable design for a suit? That, in itself, is a bit disturbing....three, there's still the possibility, with Dallas' pronouncement in 'Alien' that the SJ is growing out of the chair, that the suit serves as a means to biologically fuse its occupant with the chair, and thus, the ship. The wearer biomechanically fuses with his own technology; it's still odd, still weird and definately still damn cool.

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012The Borg? All I'm sayin' is someone or something fusing with tech... Has been done to death in the sci-fi realm. Hope it's a fresh idea... Those are much too rare these days.

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012@ pjr this is the picture I uploaded which centrosphere was referring to (it's now enlarged).

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012Thank you Sulaco for the link to that very interesting picture! I remember now awhile back I saw that but didn't notice the hands - the enlarging of the picture now has helped me see them, and I appreciate that!

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012I know the blending with tech thing has been done...what I'm referring to is a temporary fuse, as in the pilot, by wearing the suit and fusing with the chair, essentially becomes the ship in flight. He operates the craft by being the craft, in a sense, and when it lands, he disengages from the chair, breaking the fusion and he can remove the suit and go about his business.

MemberOvomorph01/23/2012You all seem to be forgetting that tall, very humanoid figure in the navigation chair chamber. He is OBVIOUSLY some sort of alien being/construction/mutant that will get in the chair and the suit will grow around him. If that DOESN'T happen in the movie I will be VERY surprised.
