Anything that Stan Winston created was and looked realistic, compared the half of the cgi things that came to be...
I miss you stan!!!!!

I completely agree 20th. When a movie, like Prometheus and use limited CGI, it usually works out better. But CGI has come along way. I prefer the real thing.
@cain1977 The movie industry has missed Stan. He was great! We all miss him.

ive seen so much cgi that when i saw the queen alien it was amazing to me because it was real..right there in the flesh live in the shot...the puppeteers made amazingly realistic movement and the puppet itself looked great even better than the jurassic park velociraptors almost a decade later. personally i think cgi is extremely overrated
it works amazing when used to make say a t rex run at night or in the rain but i think golem looked like crap and was unimpressive and i think the characters in avatar were still not that great looking...cgi will probably be worthy of all its hype in say 15 to 20 years..i think then it will start to enter the domain of photorealism but so far its still overrated...the fact is the queen alien is real and its just awesome how terrifying it is. there is a shot at the end with the powerloader on top of the queen and its a top down into the airlock and the queen is flailing its arms, legs, and tail and it looks like a real living creature

I agree. The practical effect in EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, ALIEN, ALIENS far surpassed the CGI effects in their counterpart movies in terms of verisimilitude.

the cgi in the prequels was so uninspiring and cartoonish it was like a cartoon..everythng in those movies was done behind a green screen..remember when they actually went places on location..instead every planet they go to is just another green screen mock up

@Mindbender
The CGI in LORD OF THE RINGS is done well, and as well as it could be done in a large scale projects with tons of studio financial backing. But there is something about practical effects that even the best CGI cannot touch. The tactile quality of the original ALIEN & ALIENS, the detailing of Space Destroyers & Millennium Falcon, the drops of rainwater off the snout of a T-Rex, and of course our favorite: Space Jockeys - all these are better done with practical effects. Having said that, the final battle of AVATAR with insane camera moves is near impossible & cost-prohibitive to do with practical effects.

People need to start following the Ridley/Nolan approach. As much practical shooting done in camera as possible, with subtle CGI touch ups to add to the scene.
@Engr101: I see what you're saying with Avatar. I have to be really honest; I don't like Avatar. Not one bit. Regardless of the amazing weta like digital effects (the motion capture) I still don't believe the CGI was as amazing as everyone said it was. I get really taken out of that film because I'm constantly aware that what I'm watching isn't real.

Hi guys
Im not to keen on the cgi aspect, its ok to do the things that you just cant do with puppets back drops or such like but just look at that queen its like you all say its just a work of art true genious Stan new his stuff just look at the predetor. the cgi aliens in reserection spoilt the film just awful RIP Stan

@ Snorkelbottom no I didnt know that although they did look better in AVP shame about the film do think they will do Alien V now that Ridley has got us all interested in it again?

hi everyone im new on here but have been following the discussions for some time , brilliant site, snorkelbottom just read your outline and was very impressed great story fired the imagination nicely have you ever thought of sending your ideas to publishers?

Practical - if done right - is better than CGI any day - they just haven't figured out how to do weight and mass perfectly yet & a lot of movements just look too fakey.

@Snorkelbottom bloody hell mate your wasted doing whatever you do for a living unless your a script writer LOL, have you ever thought about writing that as a book and expanding on it I for one would like to read that
