MemberOvomorph01/31/2012Here is something I'm curious about.
Is David an android or a cyborg?! I ask this because I'm taking into consideration the time period in which Prometheus is placed. Does Prometheus take place 30 years before Ripley was born (2062) or 30 years before Ripley and the others landed the Nostromo on LV-426 (2092)?! Either way whether Prometheus takes place 30 years or 60 years before the Nostromo landed on LV-426, that's a lot of time when it comes to technology.
What I'm getting at is this, Ash was highly advanced android significantly so that he was good enough to fool Ripley, Lambert and Parker as pass as human. Which hints at the fact that Ripley and the others are possibly accustom to androids whom you can tell are androids. But as advanced as Ash was, Bishop pointed out that Ash was a sort of Beta model and this was 57 years later.
Therefore I don't believe that David is fully an android. As it just doesn't seem feasible that an android that's 120 years older than Bishop would look as close to human as David looks. I speculate that David may instead be a cyborg of some sorts. And that cyborgs might have been the precursors to androids! It may even be that cyborgs are actually individuals whom volunteered for the company as ginny pigs in exchange for extended life?! This might also provide a background for David's seemingly malevolent actions in Prometheus?! Maybe he's dissecting the ampule because he's attempting to evolve himself even further beyond his cybernetic existence?!
What are some of the community's theories on David's origin and what role he will play as either an android, a cyborg, a man or a muppet lol (I had to reference the Muppets song to lighten the mood of the post).

MemberOvomorph01/31/2012you bring up an interesting point in regards
to the timeline that PROMETHEUS takes place in,
and what "David's" possible motives could be in regards
to the bioformer / ampules that he seems to be investigating
at the same time, i'd say it's a safe bet,
that Ridley Scott himself has disregarded ANY and ALL references
in ALL of the films that followed his ALIEN universe and timelines
i figured that Ash was produced from the Tyrell Corporation more
then he would be from the what James Cameron tried to interject
not having seen "David" in his full glory yet,
for me i'd say that "David" is an android. much the way Ash was
time will tell.....

MemberTrilobite01/31/2012That is a good question, but there is a third option...
Is David a...
1. Android (Synthetic)
2. Cyborg (I'm guessing a la Robocop rather than a la Terminator)
3. Replicant

MemberOvomorph01/31/2012I think he's a replicant. If Ripley wanted to blow our minds - he could merge universes, they're so aesthetically and atmospherically similar. Perhaps the Tyrell Corp could've been bought out by Weyland following Tyrells death?

MemberOvomorph01/31/2012Perhaps it is originally an Android but thanks to the intervention of the technology of the Space Jockeys ends up becoming a replicant... to the Blade Runner... or as Pinocchio?

MemberOvomorph01/31/2012I hadn't considered the replicant angle! That would be a great blending of Sir Ridley's two classic films! But is a replicant more advanced than Ash?! Replicants bled like people, but Ash had milk blood and it seems David is staring at something on his finger that resembles milk blood.

MemberOvomorph01/31/2012the reason i suggested the Tyrell Corporation,
is that i feel that both ALIEN and Blade Runner lend themselves to one another
in a certain sense. perhaps it's due to the fact that they had the same film director
i could easily see these 2 worlds cohesively coexist with one another
the only catch being, Blade Runner's world was set in 2019,
while ALIEN's timeline is somewhere in the 2100's so there is a gap there
the Replicants in Blade Runner bled red blood,
while Ash the android bled that milky white substance
so perhaps Tyrell's android technology would have to evolve
in spite of that, i could see the Tyrell Corp. having their commerce loving hands
all over Weyland's cold and calculating dealings in regards to what they require
an android to do, whether it be benevolent, or malevolent

alteredstate.
MemberOvomorph01/31/2012more human than human is our motto its the other way around
and the androids in alien were always a bit twitchy or at least in the case of ash's model.

MemberOvomorph01/31/2012@shardy, interesting theory and that would be sort of fun if Blade Runner and ALIEN were in the same universe. And that whole time period thing is exactly what has me wondering about the differences between Ash and David. Now if there is any truth to the rumors of a possible Pinocchio theme in Prometheus then David might be the one to watch. As this implies that David is an android seeking to be a real man. But something about the time period in which Prometheus takes places has me leaning towards David being more cyborg than full android. I guess we will see soon enough eh!

MemberOvomorph01/31/2012I think that the issue of the Replicants of Blade Runner is not very different from the Biomechanoids of Alien, and that both are a way of life different from the humans. I'm not saying that the rumors are true, what I am saying is that I do not think a great heresy that both universes are connected in some way, albeit only through winks and not in a way very explicit…

MemberOvomorph01/31/2012i've read things here and there about "David's" possible machinations in regards
to his wanting to be human. it will definitely be interesting to see if his said designs
actually come to fruition in PROMETHEUS
