MemberOvomorphFeb-26-2012 5:43 PMWell, finally the Barnes and Nobles had just one copy of Alien: Vault and I was lucky to be there and grab it. After skimming through it, many and I mean many things jumped out at me. I believe what was in the book, we will possibly see in Prometheus. I believe Scott has given us some answers as to what we will see in Prometheus and it has been right there in front of us the whole time. I am even sure Scott will add some new things to the storyline as well.
There are so many did bits of info in the book that lead me to believe we will see some of it in the Prometheus storyline. If you guys have the book, I'll quote the page numbers of where I have read the information.
1) I believe we will see the "Alien" in it's original form. We know from Alien, that the species took on the form of cane and the space jockey, according to Scott in the Vault, (page 111, under Alien: A Psychopathology) This will give a us a fresh look at something rather nightmarish and bigger. Also, a short lifecycle as stated on the same page. As a weapon, it would do it's damage and die and leave the ill fated planet open for what ever the "creators" were going to do after. Also, egg reproduction is a clue, we know that the Alien is a hermaphrodite, neither male nor female. So, place James Cameron's out of the story line, pretty much not apart of Prometheus. We know in Alien, Dallas and Brett were becoming Eggs as Ripley stumbled upon them.
2) The Temple or Pyramid: Scott stated on page 101, under "The Pyramid: Forgotten landscape", that he wanted to shoot the pyramid but it would make the film nearly 3 hours in length, hmmm...perhaps now, with the budget and the ample amount of time being close to 3 hours, we will see the full scope of the great pyramid in Prometheus.
3) Romance: It was stated Dallas and Ripley, as well as Lambert and Kane had romances. In the script to Alien but was cut there was a sex scene with Dallas and Ripley. Yet in Prometheus we know Shall and Holloway have a romance and sex, which leads to something horribly happening to Shaw.
4) Alien in "Alien" was a hybrid...as stated in point one. Of course, these are theories that Scott stated when it came to the Alien.
I believe we know more than we think we do friends, it is right there in front of us the whole time but we know Scott will throw some new and fresh ideas into the mix.
I have not been here in such a long time, I have been doing school work but am on here daily and I like to say the moderators, who are dear friends are doing a great job here on the forum...say thanks every once and while to the crew.
I recommend the Alien: Vault to any Alien fans, it is a great wealth of knowledge and a great piece to own.
I look forward to the discussions....
Cheers!

MemberOvomorphFeb-26-2012 5:57 PMI do think that the bestiary in Prometheus will consist of appearances that were shown in concept art, at least. Not sure how to say this without not making sense, but perhaps we're going to see some creatures that appear & act as they were originally meant to be, instead of how we already see them (from Alien onward, or rather Aliens onward). The name "Star Beast", a creature speculated to be in Prometheus, was actually going to be the name of what we now know as Alien as of 1979.
If these creatures in Prometheus have names, they may be named directly after H.R. Giger's work, but who knows. If not from his work, then names from back when Alien was in the planning stages.
Alien: Vault, eh?.....one of these times I ought to check Barnes & Noble for it. I'd do it tomorrow but we're experencing a hefty blizzard.

MemberOvomorphFeb-26-2012 6:02 PMi was looking on imdb at the effects crew for this and the amount of creature effects technicians and conceptual artists/ creature sculptures, and animators, is staggering .
Just thought i would mention that

MemberOvomorphFeb-26-2012 6:06 PMSorry to hear of the blizzard Dave. I am in Tulsa, Oklahoma and we are usually having ice storms now but are having mild weather. Hunker down with some hot chocolate and Alien, that's what I do.
I believe we are going to see the concepts once thought out for Alien in Prometheus but in their essence...the DNA so to speak. Now that Scott has the budget, he can do more and get more of what he wanted in this film then the barriers and walls he had in Alien.
I have distanced Aliens and the rest of the franchise from Alien. I believe Alien really has nothing to do with the sequels that came forth. I am happy that Scott has made Prometheus a new film and has stayed away from the series and kept Alien to live by itself. As a writer, it is what I would do and I am happy that Scott is taking back control of what is rightfully his vision.
Also, being former military and working in the film industry for a short while, most idea's here are going to hit close to the mark in the film. Scott is keeping the film simple, yet fresh... and when I say simple, I mean the scare tactics as was used in Alien, we are going to see in Prometheus.

MemberOvomorphFeb-26-2012 6:09 PMHey Alter...
Yeah, I saw that too. Scott has made everything by hand, after all, it looks better on film than most CGI effects. Big sets, possibly animatronic creatures with little cgi effects for the creatures. There is something great with real life made creatures and sets....of course, it helps the actors pretend to be in the real universe. Glad to see Scott going "Old School" on this film.

MemberOvomorphFeb-26-2012 6:15 PMYeah a lot of the crew have a great pedigree of work behind them . He's really pulled out all the stops for this one I was looking at the various animatronic's artists, and sculptors to make up artists, and they all have great resumes of work behind them.

MemberOvomorphFeb-26-2012 6:19 PMIndeed. I see this as being his Cecile B. Demill film, all the big sets and great acting. Truly this film will be his finest of what he has accomplished in his many years.

MemberOvomorphFeb-26-2012 6:23 PMWell when you consider what he achieved with a relatively modest budget on his previous sc fi excursions i'm at a loss to think what he can accomplish with a decent budget.

MemberOvomorphFeb-26-2012 6:30 PMI do believe that he will blow our minds with Prometheus, it will be like scene from Scanners where at the end of the film, all our heads will blow up because it was too much awesomeness.

MemberOvomorphFeb-26-2012 6:33 PMlol ahh scanners i went to see that at the pictures when it was released i always thought cronenberg never gets the recognition he deserves i would love to see him do another sc fi with a decent budget to.

MemberOvomorphFeb-26-2012 6:36 PMand what happend to john carpenter another great director who never got a decent crack with a decent budget.

MemberOvomorphFeb-26-2012 6:39 PMI've thought for a while that Prometheus might secretly be a reboot of the Alien franchise. Although I say that while appreciating what the Alien franchise currently is (save for the AVP movies, which were proof that they were better off as comics to begin with, ugh), not to mention that Aliens was my favorite of the four (#4 is Alien 3, #3 is Alien Resurrection, #2 is Alien, and #1 is Aliens......this is even based on the order in which I saw the movies back in 2000).
Until that moment comes when we realize it, though, I don't think Prometheus is a reboot. All we know is that there are "strands of Alien DNA". I think what Sir Ridley meant was that if you've seen the 1979 Alien movie, you'll spot plenty of similarities in Prometheus. Prometheus can still be considered a prequel; it's just that it won't be blatantly obvious, which is a good thing, because subtle prequels are rare. Just because you can't immediately see the consistencies and similarities doesn't mean it isn't a prequel.
As for being unable to get that Alien: Vault book, well, I do have the Alien Legacy DVD set (20th Anniversary, with the chrome-like Alien protruding on the cover; looks like this). I do recall the Alien DVD having some making-of stuff, including plenty of concept art imagery. I'll just look into that stuff for the time being.

alteredstate.
MemberOvomorphFeb-26-2012 6:51 PMPersonally for me the order of preference is the order in which they were made. I feel there are definite connections to the alien film that's blatantly obvious in the trailer but it is going to be a completely different story. Its basically a film with origins at it heart the origin of man, the origin of the xeno, and the origin of the space jockey, Which ultimately leads to the origin of the original film, and its subsequent sequels.

MemberOvomorphFeb-26-2012 7:07 PM@alteredstate.
For a while I was considering a Neon Genesis Evangelion comparison based on how it was the Space Jockey that created mankind and the aliens, that because of such, humans and aliens have genetic similarities, yet both species are unable to co-exist......kind of like how, in NGE, the angels and the humans are technically the same on the genetic level, but unable to co-exist as though, despite genetic similarities, they're both different species.
Of course, I should scrap that theory; I still assume all those urns in the Ampule Room each contain the genetic soup for different species, because the Space Jockeys are godly entities able to create entirely different species of flora & fauna altogether, each one not being related whatsoever.

MemberOvomorphFeb-26-2012 7:17 PMAgreed crazy dave . i also think ridley doesn't like to break away to far from Plausibility. He's stated as much on many occasions, and from a scientific point of view all life in the universe as far as we can tell has a remarkably similar genetic code with a tiny percentage variable which creates all the incredible variety of life we know.

Mr.J
MemberOvomorphFeb-26-2012 7:32 PMI agree with you both. This will be a new story within the same universe and I am along for the ride of what Scott does. I am looking forward to be frightened and scared straight with this film...perhaps the only film that I am looking forward to seeing this summer.

Co-AdminMemberOvomorphFeb-27-2012 5:08 AMSome very good ideas here from everyone. What always got me (as it did Sir Ridley) was that none of the subsequent entries made even looked at the Space Jockey that was dead in his chair, who was he, why was he there in the first place and why did he have that hole in his chest?. It is still my faveorite part of Alien when they discover that thing, the pulling back of the camera, the music as we see the dead body. I'm very much looking forward to seeing the who, what, why, and I have absolutely no doubt that it will be as unsettling as the very first Alien was. I'm also looking forward to some horrible new creatures :-P
I think I'm going to watch it again tonight :-P

"Is it dead this time?" "I dunno, poke it with this stick and see."

MemberOvomorphFeb-27-2012 7:24 AMThat scene where Kane peers over the platform and looks up to see the SJ is amazing. I love it when the camera pans back and reveals the whole scene and just how small Kane is when compared to the Seated Jockey.
With Prometheus, I believe Scott has the chance to do what he did not get to do in Alien. After reading the Vault, there was so much that he wanted to do and I think in this film, he will finally show more as he wanted, grant it not the Alien and I am fine with that. To see what the Alien was before human incubation is going to be awesome and frightening at the same time.

MemberOvomorphFeb-27-2012 8:40 AMThis is, honestly and without a doubt, the only movie I'm looking forward to seeing this year. I check out the new film trailers weekly, and there's simply nothing in the same league as Prometheus. In terms of scope, themes, art and production, talent, everything.
This film will be like the best single malt scotch, aged 33 years.
Fall down seven times, get up eight.

MemberOvomorphFeb-27-2012 9:07 AMWhat is also great about this film is how secretive it has been so far. I was excited for the Dark Knight but too much has been leaked out and I already kind of know what will happen. With Prometheus, I have no clue. All I can do is speculate on what can happen. I am truly looking forward to this film in June and will probably be the only film I am interested in and oh, the Hobbit because I love JRR Tolkien's work....lol

MemberFacehuggerFeb-27-2012 9:29 AMCain1977, agreed about TDKR. It should still be a good movie to go to and see exactly how it plays out versus our per-conceived notions based on all the "leaks". Prometheus, on the other hand... I have no idea... and I love it!
I think next year's Oscars will be interesting as I believe 2012 is looking like one of the better years for movies in a long time.

MemberOvomorphFeb-27-2012 9:37 AMI was reluctant at first but bought "The Vault" and I love it !!!
I learned so many things I did NOT know already reading it.
Some notes...
I have begiun to believe that The Crew Of prometheus will look at the EARTH first, and discover some ANNUNAKI like clues here on Earth that send them into space on a completely unanticipated trajectory..and that this is where the fun will begin.
They will steal something, probabaly those URNS, their creators aren't going to be pleased, and Mankind will be targeted for punishment.
What we are seeing in the Traile at the end of it, is the beginning of the last 8 minutes of the film...it's the Derelict crashing on LV-426...100%...and the 8 minutes after that are going to tie this thing in to "Alien".
What will be left to do in any other sequel or prequel will be filling in the connection details I believe.

T-Minus-Five
MemberOvomorphFeb-27-2012 11:24 AMI don't know. I don't think Mr. Scott would want to go back and bring up plots/ideas that have been talked about before. It just wouldn't be... original.

shambs
MemberOvomorphFeb-27-2012 11:48 AMIt most likely that Prometheus will be very based or influenced by the original ideas that ridley had intended for the film Alien. but on the other hand think that Scott said that Prometheus going backwards... in no way forward... probably the concept will be new and creative mixing with some ideas of the book of Alien.
what I wonder is whether the temple pyramid is a paleontological/archaeological location on Earth where the vestiges of the engineers/space jockeys race or is a structure of the alien planet...
By the way @Cain1977, nice thread.

MemberOvomorphFeb-28-2012 7:07 AMThanks Spartacus, I've been on the fence about Alien Vault, but you've just convinced me I need to make the purchase.
I have heared it said recently that in making this film Scott was heavily influenced by 2001 A Space Odyssey and Pinnochio (of all things) but I found a "Leaked film synopsis" that was posted on anoter forum back in July of 2011 that fits these ideas perfectly.
In 2001 A Space Odyssey, it depicts mankind discovering an ancient extraterrestrial artifact which ultimately leads us on a pretty trippy journey to a "meeting with our makers"
In the "leaked synopsis" we also discovered extraterrestrial artifacts which lead the us to a confrontation with our makers, who at first are pleased with their creations in that they had at last advanced to the point that we were intelligent enough to discover the location and make the journey, at which point they send us on another (and possibly trippy) journey to another place and time - at which point one of the crew - most likely the android David (this is where the Pinnochio part comes in) steals the building blocks or bioformer or whatever (because he wants to be A Real Boy!!) So you proably know the rest - the Gods become wrathful and send their angels to smite us - angels being probably the progenators to the xenos or maybe some other life form..
Anyway, I don't know why I just typed all that - I really just wanted to thank Spart for convincing me to buy that book, really. I am reading 2001 now, and a lot of the ideas in there made me think of how well they would fit into what we know so far about Prometheus.
