Prometheus Rovers

They are fairly heavily featured in all the snippets and will obviously have a significant role in the movie. Looking similar to Mowag Piranhas to me but could very well be custom made for the movie, similar to that truly terrible movie Doomsday, yes they actually made the APC’s in Doomsday from scratch!
Does anyone fancy speculating about the rovers, how they’re powered? What they’re equipped with?
I dont think they look great to be honest , big gold wheels and loads of flashy lights? A bit toyish. A fairly stark departure from Camerons APC which in my opinion looked absolutely convincing.

yeah a survey team would go unarmed. in this day in age exactly, if we were going to go to another planet with are limited tech, we would know everything about it or as much as we can using probes before we went there so we know what to expect.

yeah but these arent apcs..theyre excavation/construction vehicles..does anyone know what the chasis is from
March 13, 2012
it's just built out of a modified Stryker body used by the US Army
And all APC stands for is Armored Personal Carrier...so i'm guess since their going to an alien planet there armored...either by plating or some kind of hidden gun turret or both

i actually dislike the new car thingy apc whatever, because it looks like its supposed to be metal but it looks more like plastic to me, almost fake. the apc looked a lot better, just my opinion :)

A Stryker is a Mowag, they just renamed them for the US military.
Yeah they do look plastic, disappointing really considering the ship looks absolutely amazing. Are they armed?
Would a survey team even today, visit a ET planet on a completely unarmed ship? I have no idea

We didn't go to the moon with heavy armor and we won't when we go to Mars or Europa either. People who go on expeditions accept the possibility of encountering extreme danger and death or being marooned. Also carrying the bare minimum is essential to conserve energy. So purely from a practical point-of-view, heavily armored vehicles would be the last thing on the list, IMHO.

i know it would not need to be armored, but like i said, it does not look like it was supposed to look like plastic, it looks like they were going for a metal look and failed.

they can travel light years in this "Universe" and they know there's aliens out there from finding the map room on earth....Bare minimum don't apply here..cause they have obviously found and unlimited safe power source... hence all the weapons and vehicles and the sheer size of Prometheus it's self
better to have a gun and not need it then need one and not have it...and the astronauts did carry 9-mm with them to the moon, and if we go to mars or Europa they'll have some kind of self-defense with them as well
March 13, 2012
and no a Stryker is not a Mowag, it's derived from it in a round about way but lots of differences.
The 8x8 US Army Stryker vehicle is derived from the Canadian LAV III which in turn is based on the Piranha.
It's just like you can't say all jets are kitty-hawks cause there based off of the wright brothers lift to thrust ratio of basic flight, with wings, rudder, and elevators
March 13, 2012
Can you cite your source for "and the astronauts did carry 9-mm with them to the moon,"
I can't find anything to back this up.
March 13, 2012
Sarge that is not a fair comparison, Mowag derivatives have been manufactured under license by General Dynamics to produce the Stryker, the LAV and other models.
The design is basically identical, thats why they had to pay a license fee to manufacture them, else they'd be sued.

The Prometheus Rover looks like this:

March 13, 2012
Or even better analogy:
This is pure metal:

But Prometheus Rover is more like this:

Aside from the gold hubcaps, I think the APC/ rover looks pretty realistic. Many things, especially in the military- are being manufactured with heavy emphasis on the use of composites. They are lighter and stronger than metallic alloys, but are harder and more expensive to manufacture.
But the hubcaps have got to go...
And I think traveling as far away as the Prometheus crew does, they would be heavily armed- at least defensively. Abrams and Apaches aside, but they would use armored vehicles and medium arms. Weyland would most definitely protect their investment, no question in my mind.
The Aliens APC was cool, but couldn't traverse a speed bump. ZERO ground clearance. Maybe useful in an urban assault, but no way it could go off road.

Ditto on the hubcap thing, that's actually one of my biggest problems with it :) and yeah I always thought that about the apc too, but you know what they should have done for the Prometheus car thing? A similar vehicle to that thing in aliens, NOT the apc, that other thing that the colonists drive, that may have only been in the special edition but it had huge wheels and was far off the ground, looked almost insect like in a way, I would give you a link bit I am on my iPod and don't know how to do that :)

The Prometheus rovers look simular to the 'Landmasters' in the 1977 sci fi movie ' Damnation Alley' starring George Peppard and Jan Michael Vincent. It was the coolest vehicle ever built for a movie at that time. It could even drive across a lake. Google it.

I haven't seen Damnation Alley, but I've read the book, by Roger Zelazny, that the film is (very loosely) based on. Judging from the film's synopsis compared to the book's plot, I'd say read the book instead.
Fall down seven times, get up eight.

I was lucky enough to go to a Secret Cinema screening of the movie, which had the rover and other ground vehicles there. They look immense in the flesh, despite the obviously plastic exterior they managed to blow me away. What was even more amazing was finding out that they drove them down the M1 motorway from the studio to the venue in London!!
