Ancient Temples

In looking at the wide overhead shots of the Prometheus' making planetfall, it's obviouse there are mutiple temples lined up. It occurs to me that these are very primitive compared to the technology of the Spacejockeys. Since the star map was found in multiple ancient abandoned sites from Mesopotamia to Mexico on our planet, I wonder if the temples on this alien world were also built by a now extinct race. Perhaps the jockeys built their undergound hangars, and then entered into a dormant state to be reawakened at some point in the future. Local inhabitants may have built the temples over top of them as an homage. Notice that the shape of the temple and the surrounding walls could be primtive reproductions of the horseshoe shaped Space Jockey's craft. Ancient people on our planet built pyramids in the shapes of mountains to honor various dieties, so this seems reasonable.

Excellent point - something built, left to be awaken, and discovered. The idea that something came before, left behind remnants to be uncovered might have resulted in the homage trying to recreate what people envisioned as a natural progression. Brilliant execution - so did we create a new addition, have a creative take on what may have been, or are we created to continue? Yer call, boss - but great thread start.

the thing that I am most curious about is--how did these roads get here? I am assuming that Prometheus' crew does not spend their first several weeks clearing the rock formations and running a full road developing crew before they can drive to the temple.

I think the roads are part of the Temple Complex, built by the same people. Similiar to Nazca, Teotihuacan etc. The Nazca lines were built by removing the loose rocks and soil of an area. They are maintained because they are located on a high desert without much moisture. I've also thought the windstorm we see maybe the first defense mechanism triggered by an intrusion into the temple. And I think as in the original Alien, the primitive indications were a warning that these creatures should be avoided. Not an invitation or a distress signal.

Not only several other temples, but the ship contains another 6 or so very large chambers waiting to be explored.

@outlander not that I am discrediting your theory, but how do you account for the road leading all the way out to the Prometheus itself? An indigenous culture is very possible, however unlikely. Although I like your idea of the massive sandstorm being a first line of defense for entering the temple-you can clearly see the same APC and other assorted vehicles hauling ass back to Prometheus in way too many shots for it to happen just after they enter the chamber. Definitely going to be after the urns begin to release their bio-shock and awe on the unsuspecting crew of explorers.

Well, I think it's not so much a matter of the road leading out to Prometheus as Prometheus comes down and lands right in the middle of the lines on the ground. And I think there will be multiple trips to the Temple itself. I didn't mean the storm would kick off immediately, but it would be the first reaction of the complex to the invaders. But with all the weapons develoment Weyland does, it could also be the result of intentional destruction. Or even just a random windstorm as happen in the desert sometimes. They call them shamals in the mideast.

Yes, I suppose that could make sense if it is the Prometheus were landing on the road. Seems like such a sacrilegious act! That would be like an alien race visiting us and landing on one of our graveyards! We will have to see how this storm is played out in the final film, but it sure looks like a direct result of the end of paradise! Perhaps after the explorers have desecrated some alien artifact, or as a direct result of David's theft of some alien bioform material.

So far it is looking like the dust storm may be a naturally occurring coincidence in that it just happens as "Elly" (Elizabeth Shaw) makes it out with one of the the dead Engineers heads (in her carry-on luggage) as they haul ass back to Prometheus. This should be after the first visit to the temple. Also, it appears like there may even be multiple temples/structures, though we may never get to see beyond the main temple (as it is just so massive in itself)!
