I know we talked about this already but its getting out of hand now, the tech that humans have in this movie is to advanced in comparison to the rest of the series, the space suit i can understand, top of the line and for science use, but just look at the interior of the Prometheus, did we really need the clear touch screens? and the holograms? i mean yeah its cool, and we have that tech now, but tell me this, would they really use delicate tech on an expedition to an unknown world? they would probably use hard and strong tech, god forbid something breaks out there, and they did not have that stuff in alien, and yeah i know, truck drivers in space compared to an expensive science expedition, but what about aliens? they were not truck drivers, they were marines, on a military grade ship, they would probably have that teach in the time of Prometheus, and aliens is how many years? 97? 97 years after Prometheus. does not mean the movie is bad, but come on now, we competing with avatar here? I guess it needs to be said, again. Check out the tech of todays truck drivers or miners compared to that of an astronaut or computer engineer.

Look at a modern science lab with top of the line everything. Now look at a 18 wheeler cab. This is pretty much what we are comparing. The real world difference is just as striking.

No one is going to put CRT screens in a sci-fi movie in 2012. The easy explanation is that Ridley said he wanted to do it this way instead of the Alien way. edit: probably because of what genjitsu says below. Actually, I remember Ridley mentioning he wanted to get on board with JC's 3D process after seeing early footage of Avatar.

Yeah he was def. influenced by some shots in Avatar. They are friends, and turnabout is fair play.
I may work for the company, but im really an OK guy.

They get hand-me-downs from the Army.

Ridley wants this to be a 3D sci-fi spectacle in the neighborhood of Avatar. That was his plan with Forever War, but that fell through or something. Just be thankful dark realism and mystery is more his style, and not purple plants and blue cat people.

JC is on record having said that the Colonial Marines should have been more hi tech (as well as disciplined.) And while I see your point about sturdy equipment, how do we know the tech shown isnt sturdy? Ridley said one of the reasons he wanted to use the bubble helmet for the space suits was the idea that there would be incredibly durable glass available. It stands to reason then that these interfaces are made of this glass, and would likely be much lighter also. I get people who don't like the disconnect between the level of technologies in this and Alien, but lets be sensible. This movie isn't just for us hardcore Alien fans. It needs a broader audience and outdated tech would hurt their perception of the film. I just want a good movie that has enough commercial success to keep Sir Ridley doing Sci Fi and maybe one day gets us the Xeno-centric movie we all want to see.

Oh, and as for your question about whether they would use that kind of tech on expeditions? Someone with Natl Geo is planning on taking an Ipad 3 on an expedition to Everest, so yeah, it happens. We might also see a tweet from the top of the world to go along with the one from the bottom of the ocean Jimbo sent this weekend.

You make an excellent point - one that's bugged since the first teaser. In the Wondercon interview, Damon Lindelof sort of explains it by suggesting the Nostromo was an industrial barge and the Prometheus is a high-end scientific vessel. I can buy that. I'm sure they had many sleepless nights figuring out how to design everything to look pre-1979 Alien, but also not look like pre-1970s technology. [Actually, I'd kinda love that.] It's up for debate as to if the Space Croissant is the same one in Alien, but it's obviously the same model. The navigation chamber has a different layout than in Alien, but it looked the way it did in Alien because they were forced to reuse set pieces due to budget. I have faith Sir Scott won't go back and digitally alter the first movie for continuity, like George Lucas did!

yes its a prequel, but the technoloy on the prometheus appears to be more advanced than the tech on the nostromo. i suppose since its also completely plausible that anything that occurs in the movie prometheus is also within the realm of reality we should all be concerned. its 34 years after the original was made. if any of us want to even see a movie like this get approved and financed in hollywood, its going to have to be visually impressive to the viewer in 2012, not 1978. lets just give ridley some slack on this one....
