At first I thought this wast the derelict. Now as I look at it, it seems to be the top of the telescope chair. I think it was the placement of it in the trailer that got me thinking it was the whole ship. Also, you can see the sleeping coffins on the side of the opening filled with what looks like the same fluid that's in the ampules. Do you guys agree?

yeah, it is the top of that 'canon chair' probably the original design in 1979 Alien is the same (though I can't remember if you could really see the top of that canon in the movie). it is interesting that every space jockey figure has these 'dots'

I never noticed the dots. I wonder what they are for.

Also,it appears to have a face plate, maybe some type of device that allows the SJ to control the ship telepathicall

I noticed that too, you see it open, before that the "Iris" there in metal is the same as other scenes as the floor, it opens up as a space jockey fiddles around with a green orb thats probably earth setting his destination, he hops into the chair, gets covered by that armour and sets off into space, before the proemtheus slams into the bastard and he goes crashing back down. Oddly this is actually probbaly a small part of the movie

This may have already been said, but I've always wondered if the cannon is some kind of parasite (facehugger) delivery device with the chair acting as a restraint to keep the host in place?

In one of the trailers, the IMAX WonderCon, the shot of Space Jockey suit opening up cut next to a shot of Shaw in that Automated Surgery table struggling with the proto-facehugger organism. I think it is hinting that the Space Jockey chair is also medical in function. Either to insert new organism in the host bound in the chair (ala Prometheus) or extract & project new eggs into new planet/terrain.

I really wonder why this question wasnt discussed before..this chair is a main point in ALIEN. The telescope chair in P is maybe different. In the script of Walter Hill and David Giler there wasnt this machinery, only a small device emitting the signal, picked up by the Nostromo. The SJ are directly part of these ´cannons´, the question is whats their function? I always wondered if the part thats facing the SJ is kind a monitor or similar. The SJ suit is physically wrapped onto it, nearly one piece.I remember my thought when I saw Alien the first time ´this is a strange design, the poor chairman has a hard job´´job for life´.. I dont think this chair is projecting eggs elsewhere..

maybe they travel the same way guild navigators do in Dune. the ship only comes alive for flight when merged with driver. then, driver picks destination through some sort of 'mathematical/astral projection' which the chair makes happen - probably much faster than light. Like immediate travel or something. would also explain why the thing can't fly if they're dead?

EGR101- I've been thinking the same think the coffin has a hole on it. The SJ body has holes in it. Then there's this pic... It's smaller than a SJ, but it looks like one and has multiple holes in the legs. I get the feeling the derelict IS in fact a birthing machine. The telescope may deliver the seed. It's be stated before, but I keep coming back to it and the Giger illustration of Nut. The holes being where the serpent enters for fertilization. Maybe the opposite that's been stated too, a place for the serpents to come out from. The SJ is a bag of serpents ready to be deployed?
