'The last 8 minutes is a prequel to Alien'...illogical

the coming
MemberOvomorphMarch 29, 20121175 Views26 RepliesNo offence to Sir Ridley, but it is illogical to say that only the 'last 8 minutes is a tie-in to Alien'
...why? Because the previous 120+ minutes is a prequel to the last 8 minutes...lol
unless the movie switches into another movie completely severing the timeline

I think you're taking him too literally....of course the film as a whole is a prequel.....The entire idea behind 'Prometheus' is to look at the universe of 'Alien' from an entirely new angle...by answering questions no one thought to attempt an answer for in previous sequels....specifically the nature of the SpaceJockey race..
'Prometheus' is its own vision, and yet fans of the franchise, which this is undoubtably and irretrievably linked to, expect a certain level of intuitive acknowledgement when it comes to all things 'Alien'. Ridley, knowing this, has to acknowledge it as delicately as possible in anticipation of its release without revealing too much.
This not about the 'last 8 minutes is a tie-in to Alien'. It can't be as cut and dry as that and Ridley himself has gone out of his way to make that as clear as possible without revealing too much. What he is essentially saying is that in those 8 minutes, the elements of the franchise that people expect, will recognize or as much of them as make up the substance of 'Prometheus' are most readily noticeable and richly layered in the story being told....this is, for lack of a better term or phrase, where the rubber hits the road.....
Anyway, what's to complain about? You're making a flippant snap judgement about vague statements meant to give fans an impression of something they've been waiting for a VERY long time without ruining it in the process.....
When was the last time any studio took this much care to make sure our release day exprerience was as pure as possible while still managing to ramp up the anticipation level beyond reasonable expectation in the midst of a rabid fan-fueled speculative internet frenzy AND ultimately keep the overall picture of the film and its plot a veritable secret successfully?
There aren't many examples.....so, relax and enjoy the ride, save the criticism for when you've actually scene something to criticize....

I'm sure there will be much "alien" going on, and the movie is something to which the Alien series will seem kind of a spin-off.

Probably what Ridley means is that you won't see a clear direct link to Alien 1 until the last 8 minutes of the movie. At that point, maybe you'll be like "Oh! Now I can see how this ties into Alien!" or something...
March 29, 2012
Well it all starts in the 3rd Act he said ... cos that's when you'll start to see the Alien DNA ... his words ...

Like "the Thing" prequel that was done last year. Although actually intended as a prequel the last few minutes tie into the John Carpenter movie.
I think Ridley is trying to avoid calling it a prequel so people will go see it who have no interest in the first movie. For what ever reason. In truth many movies made in the 70s don't hold up well today because they lack the luster of today's technology or the movie is too slow and painful to watch by those who have to have a constant flow of fast movement in their eyes. And movies back then didn't always have to have something of interest for all marketing groups.
If Ridley calls it a prequel some people will think "oh just another prequel, I don't want to have to watch the original to understand it". I think he wants the movie be something that can stand alone by itself as well as tie in to original. So he calls it a stand alone.

It's Thelma and Louise for the first 2 hours. Then, as they drive off of a cliff, they are rescued by the SJs. But, unfortunately, they take a peek into the cargo hold and release they face huggers. The ship crashes, the end.

Just imagine if Ridley were to show us in the last 8 minutes the Chestburster bursting out of the Spacejockey, falling through the acid burned hole of the derelict, growing and growing until it becomes a Queen and thus, starts laying eggs in the derelict. The film ends. I KNOW the QUEEN was Camerons idea but it would be kind of neat to see Ridley pay a "little" homage to the franchise. lol I thought that would be cool.

GREAT stuff, Craig...great...
...and to answer your rhetorical question: I can't remember any time except back during the star wars/ Alien heyday of the 70's via 20th C. Fox...

Never.
I'd rather not say how long I've been making sure that I see certain films on their opening day under the most optimal conditions money can buy. But I will say it has been a lot.
craigmore, under no circumstances are you allowed to abandon this board...

All you have to see is the letters for "Prometheus" come together in the trailer just like the trailer for Alien to know it's a prequel. Also for a split second in the trailed it looks like the space jockey comes out of the floor in "it's" ship.

And I read that Damon Linderdorfferren said that in the last eight minutes the Stones appear to play Satisfaction. Now, that is bold.

While I agree with Craigamore, I think the coming was more joking than complaining. Or could I be wrong? Me? Wrong?

I think he's tongue was firmly in his cheek when and if that was said but you never know it just doesn't seem fitting with sc fi of this type that was what let battlestar down buy using a bob dylan tune to switch the cylons on it just made the credibility level drop unless dylans a cylon lol.

well its stated the beginning of the film begins with the dawn of time that was the purpose of filming in iceland to portray the dawn of earths orgins so maybe there are several time switches in the film who can say.

@alteredstate
I think that there should be a monolith in the dawn of time prologue, maybe off to the side of the big blue man. Just looking inconspicuous. And at the end we should see Shaw see a SJ version of her father and then start to cry as it rains upside down. We won't know what the hell movie this is a prequel to.

lol dallas maybe she should fill her tummy with stropharia cubensis mushrooms and have an out of body experience that propels her into a psychedelic experience where she meets herself as the face of god at the centre of the geometric mandala that is the gain mid life crisis the Magnum Opus at the centre of the philosopher's stone the holy grail is indeed a mushroom and the Macrocosm and microcosm of our existence is in the minds eye lol.
