And no, that doesn’t mean that they’re in talks with Ridley Scott to develop the sequel. In a bizarre move by the studio, they’re in talks with director James Cameron to direct the sequel in development.

A representative from Fox has said that the idea is to ‘replicate the success of ‘Aliens” after Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien’ was a massive hit and Cameron was able to provide a sequel that was ‘highly regarded and is arguably better than the original’. What the studio is referring to is the fact that James Cameron directed ‘Aliens’ as a sequel to Ridley Scott’s ‘Alien’ decades ago and it went on to receive an Oscar nomination and is heralded as one of the greatest action movies ever made. Not wanting to risk Scott being back for a sequel since ‘he’s never done one before’, talks have already begun with the ‘Avatar’ director to helm a sequel to the film after he’s done shooting Avatar 2 and 3 simultaneously.
Damon Lindelof has been hired to write the screenplay once again, but there are reports that him and the returning cast members aren’t happy at all about the fact that the studio is shutting original director Ridley Scott out of the equation.

An insider reports that the Scott camp is ‘furious’ about how this situation is turning out to be and the director himself has threatened to stop promoting the film to fire back at them. Fox chairman Tim Roth refused to comment further on the development, but did not deny the fact that they’re in talks with Cameron for the sequel.
There’s no information about the plot or what the title of the sequel will be, but sources report that the studio is looking at the working title of ‘Prometheuses’.
James Cameron said, "I’m not sure if Ridley changed his mind, because Avatar turned out fantastic, but it was during those early talks when he brought up the idea of me stepping in to direct a follow-up. This is why there’s a gap of a few years between ‘Prometheus’ and the original ‘Alien.’ That gap is meant for me to answer all the questions raised in ‘Prometheus.’ Ridley was eager for me helming a sequel to Prometheus, to continue the unraveling of the questions Prometheus will bring up. FOX is very serious about bringing me on board and exploring further what is left to be said about the world of Prometheus.”
