MemberOvomorphApr-03-2012 2:02 PMI think that the big stone head is not simply just some big statue but actually serves some greater purpose. One of my theories is that the big head actually telepathically controls the goo stuff and everything it infects as well as whatever those squidy tentacle worm things are. At some point in the movie the head will be destroyed and the space jockeys will lose control of all their creations which will lead to the big fellow in the chair being infected/impregnated.
Maybe...

MemberOvomorphApr-03-2012 2:13 PMHummm ...the telepathic big head dont sound very cool .... in general telepathy is one of the less scaring things in horror movies ( imo )

MemberOvomorphApr-03-2012 2:25 PMI agree, it sounds corny.
the giant head better be just
A symbol and nothing else!

MemberOvomorphApr-03-2012 3:20 PMHmm. Telepathy might be "corny" - but it need not be. It would seem risky, as any kind of "projected consciousness" deal would certainly need some pretty stylish handling...and yet: that head...
It's already iconic, it is represented as a "character" in the film and it is totemic to the point that the film is being marketed around it - (it's even the default avatar for your site!)
So, I would agree with a suggestion that it would appear a fair assumption the head is hugely, hugely significant.....beyond, "face" value [ ; ) ].
I haven't seen it discussed anywhere else and I just cannot believe the head is there just to provide dramatic shadow while it dominates that silo.
Assuming that the head is altogether stone, inert and sightless might just be to walk the path of skillful misdirection. We've already been given evidence of part the ceiling of that chamber, (or something on, or within the fabric of the ceiling), appearing to plasticize and animate - when we could equally well have assumed that the ceiling would be stone and completely inert...
"He" certainly looks stone-like, with his cracked forehead and face pocked with glyphs - but what is this subtle, but definite, net of capillary-looking pipe-works all over, and into, his dome? Just more "carving"? And is that "carving" really only representative...or actually functional?...
What is his story?
I feel certain he has something quite important to communicate to us, as an audience, beyond just being in that room...

MemberOvomorphApr-03-2012 4:35 PMI really hope that head was made by primitive humans as a means of worship, or was made to impress them by their overlords. If it's just a piece of set-dressing I will be supremely disappointed.
Putting a big ol' head in your bio goo storage room violates the principles of spaceship interior design for fashion-forward Type II civilizations.
...or maybe they just had this big ugly head they picked up somewhere as a souvenir, and couldn't figure out anywhere better to put it? "No, you can't put that in the cryo chamber, it's hideous. Put it with the sentient goop, no one goes in there anyway."

MemberOvomorphApr-03-2012 4:51 PMYes, “telepathy” could be awful – but something of along those lines needn’t necessarily be: any kind of projected or separated consciousness element in the story certainly would require the skillful handling of a master....and, yet: that head…
It’s already iconic, it appears to be represented as a “character’ in the film and it is clearly massively totemic, even to the point that the marketing for the film is thus far built around it – and it’s even the default avatar for this site!
Withal, I’m finding it quite hard to believe that Head is there only to cast moody shadows, while it dominates that silo. I would tend to agree with a suggestion that Head is, somehow, hugely, hugely significant…beyond it’s “face” value…[; )]
I wonder if assuming that Head is altogether stone, inert and “just there”, could only be to walk the well-worn path of the skillfully misdirected?
We’ve already been given evidence that the ceiling of that self-same silo, (or something on that ceiling, or something that appears to be within the fabric of that ceiling), is able to plasticize and animate – when it would have been a fair and natural assumption to believe that ceiling to be completely inanimate...
Head, himself, certainly looks stone-like, with his cracked forehead and face pocked with glyphs – as stone-like, even, as that ceiling – but, what exactly is this capillary-looking net of “pipe-work” all over, and into, his dome – rising and descending through his whole all surface? Is that just “carving”? Is it solely representational…or actually functional?...
What is Head’s story?
I just can’t help think he has something very important to communicate to us, as an audience, beyond simply “being there”…

MemberDeaconApr-03-2012 6:40 PMTo me maybe the Heads Mouth Opens and is in itself a Door to the Labrynth of Coridoors?
The Head also could be what the Gods/Jockeys look like and Mankind was made in their image.
Man does look like Titans, the Egyptian and Sumerian Gods also look a lot like their creations.

There's a very brief clip in one of the trailers, in which it appears that an SJ has taken control of a female crewmember, and it may go beyond telepathy to telekenesis. Mind control is kinda cliche', but it's almost a no-brainer for a super-d-duper advanced race of corporeal beings in a movie. If they can't control our minds with theirs, just how super-d-duper advanced could they really be? When you have limited time, and want to avoid a lot of potentially boring exposition, someone jerking around like a puppet gets the -"wow! these guys are super-advanced'- point across very quckly and effectively in the visual language of film.

Judging by the trailer they are actually in the ship when they think they are in a temple.
The first time I heard about a giant head being in this film was a remark Ridley Scott made before production began. If I remember correctly he mentioned a giant head piloting a ship through space...
I also read the alien harvest script that was floating about a while ago, which has probably proven to be a fake first draft of Prometheus by now for all I know. But (Possible Spoiler) there was a mention of the engineers having a telepathic ability in that. There were also scenes where they telepathically forced two men to have sex in a futile attempt to get them to reproduce.
