MemberTrilobiteApr-05-2012 5:03 PMFurther to our discussion to try and decode the core of Prometheus, I have been looking into theology (despite not being religious it is one of my points of interest)...
We all know the mythological story of Prometheus - Titan gives fire to man and is punished by Zeus for eternity by having his liver devoured by an eagle.
In the Book of Enoch the fallen angel Azazel does similar, having been banished from heaven he and the other dark angels are thrown down to Earth where they teach early man how to use tools and fire.
Now look at the depiction of the titans in mythology, they are shown to be essentially demons. Although they did come before the Olympian gods such as Zeus.
What if the title of the movie is the biggest clue of the lot...
The SJ's are in charge, having been around for billions of years and then they are superseded by a younger race whom lock them up in a prison, and what worse prison than a prison of their own making. The temples, their temples are their prison, their hell.
before the were superseded by their children they had given use fire. But in the time inbetween they have become shadows of their former selves, twisted, mangled, truly evil, and view all their children as bastards unworthy of existing.
They guided us, were turned upon by other children and sealed away, we come along open the prison and face our God's, whom have become Devil's.

MemberOvomorphApr-05-2012 8:50 PMI posted this in an earlier thread. I think both theories are similar.
I am in the camp of two races as well. If the film is based on Greek mythology as it is said to be, than two God types seems feasible. The Titans (the originals) and the Olympians (the newbies) have it out, with the Olympians seizing power. I think the Prometheus crew stumble upon the aftermath of their war when they go exploring. They find corpses of what I believe to the be SJ's, and also a head. We see the head being examined. One of Weyland's patents is the ability to reactivate brain function, postmortem. I think they use this on the SJ head, and then discovered what happened. They proceed to stick there nose in deeper, and perhaps release the SJ DNA (much like Hercules releasing Prometheus from the rock) that was contained or trapped by the Blues. But here's the kicker. Maybe the SJ's aren't benevolent. Maybe them being trapped was a good thing. Maybe the Blue guys winning was a good thing. Maybe, this is where the line "We were wrong, we were so wrong..." comes from. The Prometheus crew feels like there doing the right thing, the moral thing by trying to help this trapped being, but they were wrong, so wrong. And I do think the Blues are pissed that we interfered and want to teach us a lesson. And then Hell really breaks loose.

MemberOvomorphApr-05-2012 8:58 PMDig the take on the theological slant, Snorklebottom - was sorta musing on Milton's "Paradise Lost" in this situation: a fall from grace. It would tie in to what was once most beloved becoming wicked, and lashing out at that which THEY ultimately created.
Your quote here - inbetween they have become shadows of their former selves, twisted, mangled, truly evil, and view all their children as bastards unworthy of existing. - shows that sort of grief for giving creationist abilities to what they've made.
Free will plays into this - and you are definitely on to something. The SJ's created, were held accountable because of their choice. They view their makings as a cruel reminder of poor decision making, therefore unleashing their wrath.
In other words - what the hell did we just cook up, it came back to spank us, and in retrospect, now is the time for settling an age old score because another crew of chuckleheads we're responsible for came along to stir stuff up.
Man - if the flick is anything like you mention above, it's gonna be stellar.

MemberOvomorphApr-05-2012 9:01 PMForever War - stellar.
Documentation becomes a map to a corporation's greed to co-op. Nothing like reading the heiroglypics wrong, right?

MemberOvomorphApr-05-2012 9:06 PMAre we talking about "Prometheus" or "Star Trek: Insurrection?"
Anyway, I personally hope the title isn't illustrated quite so literally.

Forever War
MemberOvomorphApr-05-2012 10:38 PM"We were so wrong" Anguished recognition that Man was not yet ready to reach so far given the fact of the inherent weakness of the human condition, still eons away from acheiving the balance necessary to avoid the self destructive inborn tendencies.
Late - We go too early, take what we're not ready to handle without destroying what created us.
Simple self preservation is the only answer I see. I know what I would do if my existence were threatened. I would remove the threat, an immature, juvenile threat.

J/k but seriously too much speculating

Excellent point of perception there! We're not prepared for what we set out to discover as self-entitlement of discovering how we came to be.
Lots of selfish pursuits there, man. It's gonna be an agenda driven flick that comes back to the starting point - watch out what you wish for. You just might get it, and not near what you anticipated.

Forever War
MemberOvomorphApr-06-2012 8:20 AMAlien had an external threat, Giger's nightmare creature. Prometheus has an internal threat, the bundled collective neurosis of Man. The crew are representatives of their race whether they recognize or not.
