Last Great Sci-Fi Film?

Prometheus Forum Topic

So, I was thinking, what was the last GOOD sci-fi film based in space? Specifically one with a horror component? I mean, all of us here KNOW that Prometheus is going to be Legen-wait for it-freaking awesome, but think about it. When REALLY was the last GOOD film like it? Promethus will be epic to all of us space nerds, but what about to the general public? I mean, this film is going to turn on a whole, younger generation to the concept! Big things have small beginnings.

@Jim100a100 No, I should have said, science fiction or any movie involving complicated depth perception as in 3D. My bad, you are absolutely right, too broad a statement. I was wrong. I think you guys know what I meant though. Ridley Scott used different cameras for Prometheus because of it than he was going to originally . He also he will NEVER shoot any film with anything else ever again.

@HiveWarrior Dude, i wouldn't just make up something like that. Kubrick was a very, very sharp guy. Like the old truism says: "know thyself." ;) http://www.guardian.co.uk/film/2000/may/05/1

a gift since some of you really really loved it... and I admit I liked it graphically speaking , just not the acting. I made these four forum banners for a friend who also loved that film. Thought you guys who liked that film would appreciate them. Cool that there are apparantly a lot of "Forbidden Planet" fans on here. The whole movie screams *1950s!*......but that's only part of its' awesomeness.....well, that, and Leslie Nielsen. Have you ever seen the time he brought his "fart box" on "The Tonight Show?"

On the Riddick note i really liked Chronicles of Riddick and heard a third movie may be in the works. The 5th element IMO should rate up there in one of the classics of SCI -FI

Ian Holm fine Job acting in Alien but he did an equally fine job in the Fith Element. But thought Gary Oldmans Zorg character was just awesome. He is way under-appreciated.

@ artyoh Chronicles was a movie I had no interest in seeing at theaters and passed on mostly because of Pitch Black. When I watched the DVD I was so impressed with the movie I had to buy it. I hope they explore Riddick's origins more

Planets are cooler than outer space. Only so much you can do on a ship. Alien and 2001 are the only movies that have made it interesting, imo. Even Star Trek (TV) was only really interesting when they touched down. The 5th Elements was like something right out of Metal Hurlant. Starship Troopers was fun. Dumb, but fun.

If thinking interms of great, IMHO that still would be "Blade Runner". Good would be "The Thing", "Alien Ressurection", Fifth Element" and "12 Monkeys". Again, just MHO.

I agree, and for me, it's because both "Alien" and ( particularly ) " 2001" conveyed the complete and total isolation of outer space more effectively than any other movies I've ever seen. I think a lot of people didn't really get the 1940's-propaganda-movie political satire of "Starship Toopers." A buddy and I went to see it, and we were the only people laughing in the whole audience.

@ Biehn_Bandit How could i forget Starship Trooper. The Special Effects in that movie were awesome. Goofy but alot of fun. IMO the SE in Starship Troopers was alot better then that SW movie that can't be named.

Paul Verhoeven is a great satirist. I shouldn't say the movie was dumb, but there was some bad acting by some bad actors in it. Don't know if this was intentional or not.

Ok guys, the following is from 1997 or so, and let's face it... Starship Troopers is a pretty cool hardcore-space-sci fi movie. Of course the Verhoeven one.

Supposedly they're making a new animated series. The Roughneck Chronicles were good but animation has come along way since then.

The casting for "Starship Troopers" was spot-on. They hired kids who looked earnest and said their lines very earnestly. The entire movie is over-the-top hilarious, IMO. I actually thought it was better in that regard, than "Robocop."

This is what i mean the SE were alot more seamless in this movie than the SW Attack of the phantom sith were Lucas went wrong is that whole movie looked too sterile(interaction between bug and human looked real). BTW I noticed nobody mentioned John Carter as a good SCI-Fi movie. I had low expectations for it but left he theater entertained so much so i went back twice which is rare. Admittingly I never read any of the "mars" series books and i know a lot changed but still enjoyed it.

@artyoh Agreed that was what VH was trying to get across. A total militiristic society. Actually some of uniforms reminded me of Nazis. To this day the scene above and the one were they drop in on the planet are some great SE.

Exactly.....we dehumanized the Germans, and to a much larger extent, the Japanese, during WWII....even forced them into glorified concentration camps...to some extent, we became what we feared most.

Now "species"(horror & sci-fi) by far was not a very good movie however it raised some interesting questions. Using our own DNA to destroy us. So I wondered if the "sil" exists in the same universe as a the alien. Both are Gigeresque and the species must have some advanced society to create our own destroyer.

Species and Splice were both interesting T&A sci fi concepts that failed as movies, but they don't fit the original intention of this thread
