Alien in a Prometheus context

For the last few nights I have been rereading Alien to whet my appetite and to try and gleam any nuggets out the original story. A couple of things I spotted. When Ash is discovered to be an Android, he has the following to say about the alien signal. Company specialists already knew that the transmission was a warning and not a distress call. We were to investigate a life form, almost certainty hostile according to what the company experts distilled from the transmission And also: The derelict spacecraft we found had landed on the planet apparently in the course of normal exploration. Like Kane they encountered one of the alien spore pods. The trans mission did not say if the whether the explorers had time to determine if the spores originated on that particular world or if they had migrated from somewhere else. Before they were all overcome they manged to setup the warning to keep inhabitants of other ships from suffering the same fate. Where they came from they were a noble people. Hopefully man will encounter them again under more pleasant circumstances Dallas appeared to be mutating into a cocoon (egg), but hanging next to Dallas was Brett in a different cocoon. Different in texture and colour from the first. While Ripley couldn't know (according to the text) but it was the same as the broken urn on the derelict. - interesting that mutating into 2 different things. I know the books are not strictly canon, but when ADF wrote the books he would have been working from the screenplay script the movie was based on rather than his own imagination.

Thank you for sharing, that is pretty interesting actually. I've read on another forum that Brett was being transformed into an egg, and Dallas was being kept alive to become the host of the next Alien. IE: the facehugger would come from Brett and attach to Dallas.

Can we really be sure one alien can turn people into eggs? Sounds far fetched to me! I'm sure James cameron had the same problems when faced with answering these questions, Which is why he created the queen. However, victims would be cocooned ready for the eggs to hatch, not to be turned into an egg. If we erase whatever James did with Aliens, then i suppose it seems logical that the species must breed of course, but you think the xeno can produce a substance that could mutate a man into an egg? If the egg didn't need another host after that, i might buy it.

The whole mutating someone into an egg/urn is a bit far fetch, but it was part of the original story, and since ADF wrote the novel using the screen play I'm sure it wasn't off canon Whether or not the urns in Prometheus share the same history or not is another matter.

The humans turning into eggs was not only in the novel, it was also a deleted scene of Alien.

Well it may had sounded far fetched, but it was a scene filmed but then binned as a idea for the movie. when Aliens was being filmed they must have known about that scene but decided to go a different route like the Queen but include the way the Xenos cacoon their victims so they cant move and thus are trapped for when the Face Hugger gets released from the Eggs. The orginal screen play had many things that never made it into Alien, maybe Ridley Scott is exploring that orginal idea and the whole deleted scene idea but not as how the Xenos act, i think he will explore these things with a whole new Organism or Organism that some how at some point Evolved into the Xeno.

If the alien is thought of as a kind of nanotech machine that uses DNA as its instruction set then it can turn any organic matter into anything it is programmed to create. I imagine that the alien ship was grown rather than built. Write a DNA program and let the nanomachines go to work. It would actually be more alien to our experience if this idea were the means of reproduction. Combine the basic instructions of the alien DNA with whatever the host DNA brings to the final organism.

I dont think the idea if the victims "turning into eggs" is that far-fetched. As Jason 8 put it above, the alien likely manipulates the victims DNA to create a new organism.
