As one of our most anticipated movies of the quarter, Ridley Scott’s Prometheus is standing strong for sci-fi in a year that is dominated by superhero fare. While you can check out the trailers, viral marketing and a host of images for the film, Scott recently commented on a few details of Prometheus regarding its run-time and his director’s cut. Although he’s known for his support of director’s cut releases on DVD/Blu-ray – notably Blade Runner, Kingdom of Heaven and Legend – Scott has said that:
“The cut that you’re gonna see in cinemas…it’s always the director’s cut, really.”
Whether that quote still stands once Prometheus hits the store shelves remains to be seen. The film stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba, Rafe Spall, Sean Harris, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron and opens on June 8th. Hit the jump to read more about what Scott had to say.
In a press conference for Prometheus in Paris (via The Playlist), Scott was joined by Theron, Rapace and Fassbender to speak about the film. Scott addressed the question of run-time as follows:
“I’ve only made a mistake once on cutting a film short — I won’t say what it is right now, because this is not the time — but I removed 17 minutes off a movie, and I didn’t ruin it, but it wasn’t [as effective]. In this instance, you got a pretty good version here, pretty good cut. We’re running at about — I think without the end titles, which normally run about four to five minutes — we’re running one hour, fifty-nine minutes and change. It’s very tight, it’s what it should be.”
In addition to the run-time and director’s cut commentary, Scott and the cast answered a number of questions over the course of the half-hour press conference. If you’re interested, here’s the official synopsis for Prometheus followed by the full press conference below:
Ridley Scott, director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

MemberOvomorphApr-16-2012 10:34 AMThanks...and after watching that entire interview once again I have come to realize that he is in fact referring to "Gladiator". The extended Directors cut with his digitized "sig" on the box, has exactly 17 minutes of additional footage and it;s funny but all 4oo Billion times I have watched it I have thought the exact same thing to myself...
That print of it, might be the single best FILM EVER MADE.
The deleted scenes scream out, "We Belong in that Film"!!!
Great Interview too, I love how he kinda dozed off their during the DVD question and it seems to me we're going to get some extra footage much later on.

MemberOvomorphApr-16-2012 10:51 AMWell he's not going to disparrage a theatrical cut before it's released, because they want folks to see it in theaters. Later, when we've all seen it in 2D, 3D and seen it multiple times, they'll release the DVD of the theatrical cut. Then later, will come the "director's" cut on DVD and BR. They always stagger those after market products.

MemberOvomorphApr-16-2012 11:05 AMI'm thinking about the runtime economically in addition to aesthetically. RS says it's a tight cut of the film, but you'd theoretically be able to have more showings (and more $) with a 2-hour movie rather than a 3-hour one.
Even if RS considers the theatrical version his director's cut this go-around, I wouldn't mind seeing an extended edition later on.
Fall down seven times, get up eight.

MemberOvomorphApr-16-2012 5:14 PMI figure Prometheus 2 will make the connection with Alien, so I hope they throw in some teaser of this on the DVD and BR.
