Just a thought? Will Prometheus flop? I mean seriously I am intense about this movie but how many people even realize its existence. Few of my friends know about it and less know that is is somewhat related to Alien. Sci-fi in my opinion is hit or miss with the masses. I think the serious tone and feel of this movie might not jive with potential buyers. Most of my lady friends don't want to see it because they don't even know what Alien is. I feel to many people in this forum believe it will be a mass success but seriously this movie doesn't have sparkling vampires were in trouble...discuss!

If the masses of people and new generations just want to see a handful of fried shit (nice and sweet vampires/Lycans) and stupid and senseless alien invasion (battleship) then just say FUCK THEM ALL!

Look, I'm old enough to remember that everybody had the same attitude toward 'Alien' when it first came out, and it was a smash hit out of left field for most people and critics alike. Sci-fi can be hit or miss except when it's mix with scary monsters. 'Alien' put Ridley Scott on the map and shot everyone in the movie into stardom. Believe me Sr. Ridley Scott knows what he's doing, so sit back relax and get ready to have the living fuck scared out of you.

Here is a thought - maybe if people stop talking about the Alien connection and look at this movie as a standalone story (which it is) about man's hunt for its origins, maybe people will see it just for what it is. As far as I am concerned this is not an Alien movie or even related to that franchise. I feel RS would be insulted that people think this is another Alien movie when he has said it is not. Take it for what it is and will be - a Ridley Scott classic. We believe this is going to be a classic but I think this movie will do ok and not great because of all the Alien hype it is being given by those die hard Alien fans verses the Ridley Scott fans. I think this movie will be 50/50 at the box office because we have been filled with Avengers, Spiderman and Battleship types. Sad to say but people seem to want mindless and story less movies about machines and explosions and superheroes.

Prometheus wont flop but wont be a megahit At the box office either. Box office numbers Does not mean the movie is great but just That the mainstream likes it. Maybe we should all watch prometheus about 5 times in the cinema, just like the mindless girls did with titanic XD

Yeah, I doubt it will flop. But I dont think it will be a mega hit. It'll probably make somewhere between 40 - 60 million on opening weekend. And I'm sure it will make back its money and more once it hits international theaters. But, yes most of my friends only know that this movie exists because of my endless ranting/promoting. Most of them don't give a crap. (They're fans of "Aliens", not "Alien" and therefore don't really care for a Ridley movie.) They just want a fun sci-fi shoot-em up like "Aliens". My other, more hardcore sci-fi friends, are willing to watch this movie but strongly feel its "going to suck". I truly hope Ridley proves most wrong and this film is not only a critical success, but a commercial one too.

MemberOvomorphApr-17-2012 2:49 PM
might flop in the short run..opening weekend...but the geek fanbase is so large that it is bound to break even in the long run, bluray sales, merchandise etc

@weylandshark Very, very wise: and beautifully put. @crzygaser But who could answer that question? I've been trying to get a handle on how much this thing is costing - I'm guessing that Prometheus needs to make some really serious Gross. But Ridley Scott knows that. There doesn't seem that much to be gained in looking for reasons why it must not, or, should not, flop - because, of course no one wants it to, but it really could, no matter what you or anyone thinks. So, after recruiting all those people you mentioned, I would just go with what @weylandshark suggests. Go; enjoy. Hope it doesn't flop - but if it does, it does.

I think that's why Ridley's so focused on saying it's not a prequel and can stand on its own. Moviegoers who have no idea about "Alien" won't care, and if they like the movie and do happen to find out that there's another film from about 30 years ago that "bridges" this one, well, that's just more revenue coming in from "Alien", isn't it? It's also about two months away from release. Right now, we're just getting little teasers to start the word of mouth from the die-hard fans like us. I expect a full on assault of promotional material being thrown out there about a couple of weeks before June that will put the pieces together for everyone else. No sense in wasting ad money so far out when the "average movie-goer" will probably forget about it the next time they see a trailer for "Battleship".

I think this will be about a J.J. Trek sized hit. Trek has a stronger legacy, but the general population didn't really care about the franchise. Marketing and word of mouth and that it actually turned out to be a fun movie made it a hit. And the marketing wasn't half as good as the Prometheus marketing.

@darthmongo Exactly. Thank you. That is exactly why I think they are not drawing hard association with Alien and why that is not just false strategy - he is making a wider film, for a wider audience. I actually don't think Ridley Scott is the best Director in the World, but he certainly does know what he's doing - and, if he makes a movie with a wide enough appeal beyond very hard association with the "Xenomorph" baggage, the nature of the story he's telling - and word of mouth - will do all the rest. If I think about these trailers: I have to believe they are some of the very best yet made. If the actual Feature is even half as good, for even 2/3rds of it's run-time, well then, while it might not achieve "Inception" Box Office, the money and the future will be safe.

I see this film doing the same thing that Alien did back when it opened....few people really knew about it, there was NO internet awareness, and Ridley Scott was nobody....to the general public it was a monster movie, just the latest scare flick for teenagers. Nobody expected then what would happen. Among the competition this summer, Prometheus is going to make its competition look like a senile Easter parade, and once again, RS is going to get the drop on the naysayers. Only this time we know who he is. R is for Ridley

@Shambhala - LOL! Exactly, my friend! If the serious tone and feel of this movie doesnt jive with potential buyers, females, and glamour vampire lovers, then thats their problem. We cant force them to have good taste. I think this movie is not well known right now but hopefully it has something really great about it that when its released everyone will be hyping it up and word will get around getting it more sales. Its sad that serious films get ignored while films like batman get all the sales. This is why I dont blame Ridley for(Im guessing) making it PG-13. I dont like that he has to, but hes just doing what needs to be done in this stupid day and age where kids films get all the money and attention. I hope this movie is great and does extremely well.

I think word of mouth and repeat viewings will carry Prometheus. It will make a huge amount internationally in my opinion - markets such as China and Japan LOVE sci-fi and are turning out to theatres in their millions - example: these markets prevented John Carter from being a total disaster, Battleship has already been a big hit and Titanic re-release made nearly $100 million in China alone in 12 days! These markets will also buy into the slick marketing - I think Prometheus will surprise people and I reckon it actually cost LESS to make than a lot of the movies out this Summer thanks to Ridley Scott's experience - tons of CGI costs way more than practical effects - though there is some stunning CGI in the film, Scott did a lot of the work practically. I think what we all need to do is support the film - tell our friends to see, we need to see multiple time IN THE CINEMA (pay to see it!!!) - I for one would like to see what Ridley Scott has in mind for the Prometheus universe

I don't know about you guys, but I'm hearing more and more people talking about Prometheus. When I go to the movies and the Prometheus trailer plays, afterwards, you can hear everyone going "That looks awesome!" or "We have to see that, it looks so scary" and I've even heard the occasional "That looks like ALIEN! We have to see that!". I think it will be a bigger success than any of us expect it to be. Certainly will be a game changer in the world of sci-fi. I bet in 2014, we'll see new sci fi films which take after Prometheus and its concepts. (It happened with Alien)

@WhyDontTheyFreezeHim Exactly. Where were you a few days ago when I was getting into it with someone over this rating thing and the choices Scott has to make now to ensure this thing makes a return today - and has future tomorrow? These are some very wise observations on this thread. Sci-Fi/Horror/Fantasy - these are some deadly waters and he will have spent a fortune by the time this thing is done. I can live with PG13 if the Feature stacks up against it's own trailers. They are outstanding.

I think it will do just fine, there will be tons of competition though, this summer seems to have a ton of hits lined up. @WhyDontTheyFreezeHim; I am a girl, and all my female friends are going nuts about this movie. A lot of my male friends however, have 100% no interest in the movie, they would rather see Battleship, Men in Black and Batman. I love sci-fi, always have, I hate girlie movies... Go figure. * I just asked a male friend why he didn't want to see Prometheus and he said it was too"artsy" O_O

WhyDontTheyFreezeHim

MemberOvomorphApr-17-2012 3:38 PM
@Svanya - But youre the exception though. I just cant imagine most females would be interested in sci fi to be honest. And I cant believe a lot of your male friends are more interested in Battleship and Men in Black either! WTFs wrong with em LOL Its very cool that you and your friends are into this movie though. You have great taste unlike most females!

WhyDontTheyFreezeHim

MemberOvomorphApr-17-2012 3:43 PM
@ Svanya - "Too artsy"??? Crazy! Michael Bays movies should be more his thing then!

AdminPraetorianApr-17-2012 3:43 PM
@WhyDontTheyFreezeHim; Even my own brother won't go see it with me, he is all "meh" about it, he did like Aliens though but never was into Sci-fi like me. He hates Blade Runner too, and that is my fave movie ever. I am not American, maybe that is it, because the girls I know don't like Twilight or whatever other movies are associated with females. (To be fair I have never seen Twilight, but it doesn't look like anything I would want to watch) Yep you heard me, the guy thinks the movie will be boring and artsy. While the girls think it will be fking awesome. Way back when Alien 4 was released I went to see it with a female friend. When A.I was released I had to drag my boyfriend to see it with me, and I went to see it a second time alone.

WhyDontTheyFreezeHim

MemberOvomorphApr-17-2012 3:45 PM
@allinamberclad - Yup. Unfortunately sales matters...a lot. Scott is a smart guy and is doing what has to be dont to give Prometheus the best chance in a market where "un-artsy" films are king :( @Svanya - Im disappointed in your male friends lol! But sadly, my friends are the same too...theyre just not interested. Even my cousin is like "meh"(which surprised me)...hes still coming to see the film with me though. Its like someone else said in here, they are fans of Aliens, not Alien so much, and no show of a xeno is just not interesting to them. Im not American either by the way, Im from the UK. EDIT - "Yep you heard me, the guy thinks the movie will be boring and artsy. While the girls think it will be fking awesome." Haha! Thats crazy! Lets just hope it isnt boring and artsy(VERY much doubt it will be boring. "Artsy"? Not sure what that is exactly but it sounds good to me lol) I only heard about and watched A.I last year and think its a brilliant film.

I'm pretty sure it will do well overseas. Audiences in the US are finicky and the lamestream media tends to show disdain towards high concept sci-fi. The more sophisticated and openminded international audience will turn up.

@Svanya You basically just described the inverse of my experience LOL. Except that no one I know personally, sci-fi fan or otherwise ,is interested in this movie. (present company excluded of course) However, most of the women I know (including my wife) hate any and all Sci-fi/artsy movies. My guy friends are the ones that are into Sci-fi and "artsy" movies.

There lies the Risk and a Massive one. Some people who never watched Alien or took much notice are not going to be intrigeed by a movie based mainly on Space Jockeys and links with Alien. Those who never liked Alien/s would not watch the movie because of the tie in, and regardless people who dont go watch those kinds of movies would not watch this kind any way even if was not based on Alien Universe. The Hard Core Alien fans will be disapointed if this movie has little or no Alien links or even pisses all over the idea of Alien Franchise (i dont think Ridley would go that route). The PG13 is another potentially limiting factor, basically could limit the movie to a District 9 meets Avatar meets Paranormal Activity then again i am sure that PA is a (R) in the US but 15 in the UK. Thats why i think the US Rating system is flawed. The UKs offer more flexiblity. oh well i guess when it comes down to Age limits its one area that even Americans think sucks lol.

@WhyDontTheyFreezeHim "Too artsy" - yeah, I saw that reference @Svanya made about what someone said and a piece of food actually fell out of my mouth. Jesus....I sometimes forget: times have changed in Cinema. From what I understand, "Art", used to be a good thing... And Ridley Scott, the supreme Visualist, the man behind all this debate - where did he train? The Royal College of Art. *smh*

@BigDave District 9 was rated R in the states. And I loved that movie. I think it was well directed with a great story.

@Drakeus. OMG District9 was another movie I went to see with a female friend, none of my male friends wanted to go, not even when I showed them the short film it was based on (by: Neill Blomkamp). God I loved that movie. Click here---->District9 Original short movie

@Svanya Yeah the short was great. And to think it was an indie film made on a very minor budget. Now thats good Sci-Fi! Still can't believe your guy friends have no interest in Sci-Fi movies. I mean...dont get me wrong, I know a few men that don't like Sci-Fi movies, but those tend to be Jock's or guys that are not into any movies what-so-ever.

@allinamberclad - Yeah, this is the world we live in now. A lot of the time, things of any worth are just ignored by the masses and sometimes thought of as uncool. I just feel like most things today, like film, music and video games etc are dumbed down because the masses are "asking" for it to be dumbed down. Im shocked by how many of us in here have friends who arent interested in this movie actually. Hopefully they see it and will like it though, thats what matters more. I just dont want this movie to flop sales-wise if it does turn out to be a masterpiece. It would be a huge shame. For some reason though, I also have a feeling this movie will really do quite well. Im guessing word of mouth once the movie is out is gonna help a lot...unless it completely sucks of course lol
