from what i could deduce from the IMAX trailer, there are 5 citadels in total, including the one the way team enters the general feeling, is that there is at least 1 Engineer spacecraft per citadel perhaps it's a sort of base of some sort of operations...?

My take uses the history we have on shaw and holloway s discovery. They found the star map in ancient temples on earth if these beings are the engineers I suppose the same goes for the planet they travell to lv226 some organisms or indigenes habit of the planet worshipped the engineers just like our ancestors think about history sacrifice rituals same here just alien shit and we are smack dead in the middle......R rating please give blood gore suspense and horror in all it's glory.....born in 79 when alien was brought into this world and hopefully born again June 8 2012 when prometheus hits the big screen R rating please lol

Maybe it's a military base (the area 51 of the Space Jockeys) or biological weapons experimentation. While it is likely that each temple has a function, perhaps the smallest are for biological weapons and the larger the hangar for the war bomber / or terraforming ship (Revelation / Genesis) IMHO

Maybe they are all linked together underground and the temples are just mounds to show entrances to the underground network?

Or it could be the way they bury their kings and queens.......just like the egyptians on earth. A large pyramid for the king and several smaller pyramids for the rest of the household.

Maybe the Engineers are like Gardners... Each has their own Green House and varity of Plants to nurture etc....
