MemberOvomorphMay-01-2012 6:04 PMdoes anyone know if any of the logos as used in the Alien franchise are trademarked in any way? I consistently see a ton of companies out there making use of the WY logo, whether it be on a t-shirt, sticker or whatever.
I have no problem with this personally but I was curious if there was some legal loophole that prevents these companies/individuals from being sued, especially since they're using fake logos. My guess is that 20th Century Fox owns the rights to the Alien franchise and any designs associated with it. any ideas?

Dude, I don't know for certain, but I'm pretty sure that Fox owns everything of the franchise. I think that's the reason of "Alien vs. Predator", and the following Aliens movies after the original. With all due respect, I'm sure that are thousands of fans out there.

MemberOvomorphMay-01-2012 7:19 PMYeagh they do but that just means people can not use the logo in merchandising as far as website domains go its a whole different ball game. For prometheus Ridley insisted on the use of Weyland Corp as the company because its a corporation but the company is Weyland industries so fox had to purchase from a regular joe who had rented that domain roughly 8 years prior to even knowing prometheus would be made, they guy would have probably been offered $10,000 - $20,000 to let go of the domain www.weylandindustries.com, fox could have got weylandcorp.com but Ridley being a perfectionist insisted the site be weylandindustries.com .
by Calling it Weyland Industries as a website it means the website showcase the undustries division of Weyland Corp, a Corporation is a collection of entities under 1 identity with a board of directors at the helm, a corp has different legal standing than the individual companies and divisions under and within it. So Weyland Industries the website just focuses on the Space exploration Division and Technology side but Weyland Corp which does not have a website owned by FOX could have divisions in earth military, banking, sport, car manufacturing, food production even the police force and politics. I dont think www.weylandcorp.com will ever be brought by FOX because why would they want to spend tons of time building an imaginery history of the entire Corporation of Weyland and all its divisions, for prometheus and the alien franchise people just need to know about the space exploration and development division, so www.weylandindustries.com is all thats necessary.
I recently read about a couple of american guys who built there own cocal cola site without permission from cola, it got a huge following and then coca-cola phoned them up congratulated them and allowed them to become the official runners of the coca-cola fan page.
Sometimes it can work out brilliant at worst the company threatens to sue and you hand over the domain, at best you might be the owner of a huge recognized fan site, get freebies, go to comic cons and events and may even get a few thousand in the bank if the purchase the domain,
I got a feeling the lucky people who own www.omniconsumerproducts.com
www.tyrellcorp.com and www.weylandyutanicorp.com could be getting phonecalls in the not to distant future.

MemberOvomorphMay-01-2012 7:55 PMI was thinking more along the lines of merchandising. There are in fact dozens of sites out there selling Weyland-Yutani Corp related product, some of which are more popular than others. Since these companies are still in business I assume it's ok they continue to sell product bearing the WY logo. As far as I can tell nobody owns any official license to reproduce Alien/WY merch.
So, is it ok for businesses to sell WY product so long as it differs slightly?
