MemberOvomorphMay-04-2012 4:51 PMKane insist on going to the derelict in dangerous weather conditions, presumably walks past man's 1st encounter with alien life form, literally, a HUGE discovery, the SJ, finds the only hole in the ship, falls down it and sticks his head into egg. Milburn sees space cobra from hell and smiles like its a cute puppy, then reaches for it. Does Weyland own a patent on mind control devices? Were they briefed beforehand independent of other crewmembers that their mission was to go to these life forms and collect them, by people in the know who misled them of the danger these life forms presented, or might some other force such as the alien life forms be summoning them subconsciously?

MemberOvomorphMay-04-2012 4:55 PMnah ..are just dumbasses ( but again how many people die every year to be over confident with dangerous species ? And we are on earth ... )

MemberOvomorphMay-04-2012 5:11 PMThese types of characters are what I call “victims of the writers.” They (and their dumbass actions, or lack thereof) are required to move along some plot point or prove some aspect of the the situation at hand. They rarely behave rationally. They're not ‘allowed’ to do so. Poor things...

MemberOvomorphMay-04-2012 5:14 PMNo - you just speak of the Characters that must be sacrificed on the altar of Fiction, in order that we have a Story.

MemberOvomorphMay-04-2012 6:37 PMIt's not just the story that is being moved by such characters, also history.
The whole human evolution is a record of trial and error, because of Kane and Milburn types.
Just a couple of examples:
How did we discover that certain species of mushroom are delicious while other are hazardous? How did we discover that some plants are edible while other are poisonous?
Dumb as those character they might seem, they are a historic necessity (at their own expense, sadly).
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born.
Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

MemberOvomorphMay-04-2012 8:10 PMI'm pretty sure they're just dumb asses, however I'm not so sure it's that far off from what a natural reaction (besides fear and terror) would be. Tell you the truth I'd probably be quite curious if I saw movement in the eggs and what not. I wouldn't stick my head in it, but I'd still be curious. Not to mention some people may be more amused or intrigued by the cobra like creature then scared, causing them to move towards.
That being said I can't help but shake my head when Kane puts his face in the egg or another horror movie character makes a stupid, "putting your life at risk, and potentially commiting suicide" kind of decision.

MemberOvomorphMay-04-2012 8:23 PMThe crew does seem to be mostly rather young and inexperienced. and thus prone to recklessness. Maybe Weyland wanted it that way so that the odds were in favor of contacting the alien life forms in some reckless manner. I remember watching a documentary about the X-1 program and the sound barrier, where one of the team members reflected it was odd that they were all very young and placed with such responsibilities. He speculated that the reason may have been that if they failed catastrophically it could be blamed on their age (inexperience, recklessness) and not on other reasons...

MemberOvomorphMay-05-2012 3:09 AMThey are cut from the same cloth as the character of Landon, from POTA. Taylor said he would walk naked into a volcano if he thought he could gain some knowledge that no other man had.
Everyone on Prometheus would have to be a bit mad to go across the galaxy like they are doing, and it's clear that at least Shaw believes they are going to meet the creatures that created us. So Milburn also probably assumes benevolence among any creature they would meet.
Kane is just a bored space trucker who's trying to break the monotony of a long trip. Plus he'd love to make a unique discovery that would make him famous.
