The term is often applied to a large machine that demands blind devotion or merciless sacrifice. An Unstoppable Force.
The word originates from the sanskrit Jagannath, a diety whose name means Lord of the Universe. Jagannath is described as an Avataree (Shoggoth) i.e. the cause of the Avatars(Elder Things), and not merely an Avatar. The incarnations emanate from Jagannath, who is the cause of all material creation. (Ubbo-Sathla/Demiurge)
There is a festival dedicated to Jagannath called the Ratha-Yatra. Three richly decorated chariots, resembling temple structures, are pulled through the streets of Puri. This commemorates the annual journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balarama, and their sister Subhadra. After a stay for seven days, (creation myth anyone?) the deities return to their abode.
A glimpse of Lord Jagannatha on the chariot is considered to be very auspicious and saints, poets and scriptures have repeatedly glorified the sanctity of this special festival. The sanctity of the festival is such that even a touch of the chariot or even the ropes with which these are pulled is considered enough to confer the results of several pious deeds or penance for ages. In fact, there is a famous Oriya song which says that on this occasion, the chariot, the wheels, the grand avenue all become one with Lord Jagannatha himself.
The concept of the chariot has been explained as "The body is the Chariot and the soul is the deity installed in the chariot. The wisdom acts as the charioteer to control the mind and thoughts."
The Skanda Purana glorifies the sanctity of the Rath Jatra in the following words "Those who are fortunate to see the deities of the Srimandira in the Gundicha Temple, the final destination of the procession of the chariots, derive the benefits of a thousand horse sacrifices, an immensely pious deed. Kabi Samrat Upendra Bhanja in his famous Vaidehisa Vilasa mentions that the Lord comes out from his sanctum for participating in the Gundicha Jatra, another name of the Festival of Chariots, only for redeeming the fallen, the patita jana who get the opportunity to behold their dearest god at close quarters on this occasion. Similarly, saint poet Salabega waxes eloquent in praise of the dark Lord Jagannath and says that the Lord swaying and moving like a wild elephant arrives at the Grand Avenue and rides his chariot and destroys in a flash all the sins of his devotees, even if these may be grave or unpardonable." (Sounds like Eradication to me)
A glimpse of the Vamana (ship), the dwarf form (SJ), an incarnation of Lord Jagannatha(unseen Horror in the mountains, xeno), is sure to ensure emancipation, release from the cycle of birth and death.
Release from birth and death. (genetic integration? Total Eradication? Extinction?)
Theres some dark stuff in there. Any thoughts?

MemberFacehuggerMay-04-2012 8:43 PMWhile eloquent and well researched, the connections to the subject matter of Prometheus seem to be reaching to me.
It's hard for me to equate forgiveness of sin and pious acts with genetic integration and eradication.
Safe? Of course he isn't safe, but he's good!

MemberOvomorphMay-04-2012 8:49 PM@myrddin Unless this "forgiveness" is given by a false God.
I know it may seem like Wall of text, but im just going on the fact RS said he based the SJ culture on Persian Mythology.(Sumerian, Babylonian, and Hindu).

MemberFacehuggerMay-04-2012 9:22 PMIronically there are also tie ins with Norse Culture(eitr and the first giants) and some obscure ancient hebrew passages (Gen 6:1-8 where "sons of God" impregnated human women and bred giants).
Safe? Of course he isn't safe, but he's good!

MemberOvomorphMay-05-2012 8:02 AMMy intent is not to use Lovecraft as a basis. I just put common names and notes in parentheses to use as context for visualizing what beings are what in the hierarchy of things.

MemberOvomorphMay-05-2012 8:14 AMI like the idea that the juggernaut "demands blind devotion or merciless sacrifice." To me that sounds kind of like what the SJ chair (or all of biotechnology, for that matter) could do to whomever sits in it...
