Should Alien be given the 3D treatment as well? Even Aliens? For experience cont

MemberOvomorphMay 06, 20121334 Views14 RepliesAs a means for film experience continuity do you think it's preudent to bring out some sort of re-release that sees Alien and perhaps Aliens in a re-mastered version where by they have both been given the 3D treatment? Maybe Alien 3 at a stretch?
Should you meddle with this classic too? What do you think?

NO
Sorry, I'll expand on this.
George Lucas hath proven that fucking with what is already established will alienate you from the people that caused you to get where you are, i.e your fans, and then said fans will start wondering about your sanity when you continue to update or add to or generally fuck around with something that people thought was already as perfect as could get. So I just don't think it's a good idea to try and do it to these movies. And I reckon 3D is a gimmick that, when people can't sit and watch them without barfing or passing out because their eyes are screwed from it, will be done away with fairly quickly. That shit is a serious health concern for me, and if/when I ever get to have kids myself, I won't be letting them see anything in 3D until their eyes have fully developed, then they can check it out if they desire to. But 3D is BAD for growing kids eyes.

I don't know. 3D has never been an issue for me. With Star Wars - it was a money grab for sure. Didn't see the remastered, 3D version myself but heard nothing but good things.
3D may be bad on kid's eyes, but who's gonna take their 5 year old to see ALIEN in 3D? If that's the case, that would be the least of the child's worries.
But as for the topic at hand, personally, I'd say go for it. I never got to see ALIEN or ALIENS in the theater, so I would love to experience that. I don't see why not do it. Give those who weren't around the chance to live the classics again in the cinema - the way they were intended to be enjoyed.
3D may not be the healthiest choice - but neither is eating McDonald's or being at a computer for hours at a time, or playing video games for hours at a time. I say go for it. I know I'd buy tickets.

sure, why the hell not
as long as the original prints for ALIEN are not altered,
and copies of it are, i don't see the harm. hell, formatting
i t to 3D couldn't be any worse than the shit-show Cameron
gave us with um " Aliens "
just sayin'....

I only sit a computer for hours because I need to for work, I do however get up and wander around every 30 minutes at least for 5 minutes. And no one would take their 5 year old to see it, but most kids movies are coming out in 3D nowadays.
And why couldn't Alien be simply re-mastered to view on a cinema screen today? I'm sure many cinemas would proudly play it even if it wasn't done in 3D, I'd go see it on the big screen, but again not in 3D because it makes mee feel sick and throw up, tried to see Alice in 3D and ended up throwing up all over the chairs in front (lucky no one was sitting in them!) the aisle and my date at the time. Needless to say, I didn't get much further with her than that...........
So it's not just kids eyes and health that are at risk. A good percentage of the population cannot physically view things in 3D without adverse effects. 3D TVs come with at least 3 PAGES worth of warnings. Does that not make people wonder if in the end it's worth their health to see something in 3D?

Ummm......3D as a matter of continuity, interesting thought. I think it's out there on the edge really..I am a monster for continuity in terms of story and detail...I'm really challenged on this LOL.
I don't have a 3D TV, don't want one, won't buy one even for this. Now if we were to have available to the market much much larger screens with 3D, maybe.
I understand that Titanic underwent an 18 million dollar conversion..and it wasn't all that great, because of the colors and tones it was shot in don't lend themselves well. Prometheus on the other hand was planned for 3D, post production will make the difference here.
If the studios want to spend the money and the people want it....sure. But not for me. I am a tireless proponent of the theater as the one true experience...and I accept that no way am I ever gonna have a screen that big.

3D is not going to kill you. I'm sorry for those of you visually handicapped and can't see the effect in 3D movies and you've missed out on them how great it was seeing "Phantom Menace" and "Titanic" so vividly along with the rest of us.
Anyway...
My thing about converting "Alien", "Aliens" and "Alien3" (or "Alien Cubed") is that for "continuity's sake" you might also have to include the dunderheaded "Alien Resurrection" and the craptacularly awful "Alien vs. Predator" moron festivals just so they too can be considered a canoniacal part of the saga instead of being best forgotten. Also too, they ideally would want to wait until the technical capability goes up and the cost comes down to deliver a superior conversion to the format. So far it's still quite a task converting older movies - but of course, things ARE advancing. So far, as much as I adore 3D when it's done well, I think it's best they just leave the movies as examples of their eras unless they can convert those 2D classics to a level on par with the most qualitatively current.

Did you really just say "how great it was seeing 'Phantom Menace'" in 3D? Seriously?
A crap movie is still a crap movie whether it's in 10 dimensions or just 2.
If Fox deems it worthwhile to re-release yet another cash grab (er, classic! I mean classic) then yeah, sure. Whatever. I don't care; I wouldn't go see it.
Now, if it were Terminator 2: Judgement Day, that would be a different story...

As long as the film (including Prometheus) can still be viewed, as I'm sure it will be, conventionally in in flat 2D and in £d just for the 'special' one-time experience then available for the most part in 2D ever-after on DVD and TV then thats fine because then at least the continuity form Prometheus to Alien is an exchange that is 2D seamless with regards to following the story and getting into the 'world' of the franchise. I'm all for that as much as I'm all for the fact that if you readily have ever-more access to 3D TV and you want to see Prometheus in that regard then folow on to watch Alien in that vein as well then, once again, I am all for that providing that it is a two-way street for both format experiences so then every one regardless of your format taste is satisfied to as best a degree as you can muster.
Chiefly, because we are going to be getting another prequel experience fairly soon with The Hobbit and again in 3D and the story that preceeds it (The Lord of the Rings trilogy) is not - as yet - been converted into the 3D format. Again, here we have our quandry, do you or do you not give now The Lord of the Rings trilogy the 3D treatment so all tastes are satisfied, as long as The Hobbit can be viewed conventionally as well as in 3D I am again sold on the iidea so everbodygets a pleasant viewing experience as I like to see things both conventionally and in 3D for comparison! Here's an even more thought provoking question to which may come bitter conflicting views upon but I would even go so far as to say for both visual experiences, should it not be considered to give 2001: A Space Odyssey a 3D version as well as running with the conventional version alongside so, once again, both parties win?
I think it would be fantastic to see the into and the StarGate and the orbiting space station circling/wheeling around atop the Earth would be a fantastic experience within the cinema and I could not think of a more visual dazzling spectacle to honor the great man Kubrick and his vision than that as a fitting tribute. I would just hope that the powers-at-be-up-there would do 2010: The Year We Make Contact justice too and include that in 3D for continuity and because it is one of my all-time favorite movies!
To 3D or not 3D?

Yes, as with Terminator 2: Jugement Day that would be a good film to see in 3D and I would like to see The Terminator as well, the problem is there are a lot of protective fans out there so I default again to the process that as long as there are two versions running side-by-side or in the Alien franchise case "in The Pipe, five-by-five!" then i am all for it... The problem also is that there is a lot of public resistance to certain films being 'tampered' with. This film should be given the 3D treatment that film should be left alone and I will say here that for the case against 3D I would have to argue that perhaps such a film as Gladiator should not be messed with as it is a different kind of film and 3D would in a sense just be a novetly to a powerful, human emotion film that just happens to be set during the Roman era. However, I would still go and watch it should it ever recive such a treatment as I would, out of curiosity more than anything else, want to see what it would look like and be a sucker for the 3D experience deep-down at heart but wiould ideally think it should perhaps be left alone as a stand alone film experience in the conventinal 2D format.
300 however, I am all for that being given the 3D treatment once again providing it runs parallel with the conventional version so both parties get the experience the most desire then that would be fine with me. I would even like to see Blade runnner be given a 3d re-release treatment for the cinema.
So STILL not quite The Final Cut if I had my way!
Just Blade Runner: The Final Cut 3D! Phew! Could we hadle it? I think deep-down there would be others that would also be a sucker for that concept as well.
And you all know who you are!!!

@Xenotron lol 10 dimensional movies...that take place simultaneously in the past present and future
Alien is not a 3D type movie..it has little action and is more about suspense..the 3D gimmick won't work here
Aliens would lend itself better...again Alien 3, what's the point? hardly any action

I see where you're going but in this instance, just for the sake of Alien on it's own, the ponderous nature of the film added into the fray that it is in 3D might give a 'hightened sense of awareness' to it's atmosperic edge. It might lend itself well to the overall, foreboding theme of the piece. Don't forget we are going to be subjected to ponderous moments in Prometheus tempered by suspense and action, well isin't that not unlike a very similar parallel and on par with Alien? Alien and Aliens wouls be about justifyable for the 3D treatment I feel. Alien 3? Well there are some moments that are compelling I guess, interesting to perhaps see in 3D but there's not enough of an overall film in Alien 3 in all fairness to perhaps justify the 3D treatment. But I think there is a good case, a strong case for both Alien and Aliens though.
