Id Rather Be Eatin Something Else
MemberOvomorphMay-12-2012 4:51 AMFrom Prometheus to Alien - unless there are stories to still be told in-between until the events of Alien - how and why does the weather change upon the little planetoid from what seems like mild barren, stable-like weather to almost martian type global blizzards? True, in Alien we as the viewers may have just seen a particular storm that had brewed up coincidentally when the Nostromo had gone into orbit around the little world. But it could be that some natural or even artificial catastophe slightly 'knockedit' out of its original orbital trajectory and thus forced a change upon the planetoid through its weather systems.
It cold be like Mars and have frequent weather systems that 'blow hot and cold' so to speak from time to time but in keeping with the shifting of the planetoids orbit idea makes me wonder if that has some crittical bearing upon the stories narrative. It makes me think of Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan where Khan states that He and the rest are actually on Seti Alpha Five. He confirms to the two researches he holds captive that Seti Alpha Six exploded six months after they were left there. The shockwave shifted the orbit of the Seti Alpha Five planet leaving 'it' and everything upon it laid wasted and barren. I just wonder if weather systems like the one that looks like it brews up from time to time occur all of the time on the little planetoid and what we see in Alien is just how a typical storm cell wold be on the night-side of the planet and its like this all the time from time to time though.
O something BIG happens which potentially ROCKS this little world down to its core and that of the plot line as well! I hope its signifigant that something may occur that shifts the world off of its axis and thus would go a long way to explaining the such ahrsh conditions upon such a relatively tiny world.

MemberOvomorphMay-12-2012 7:20 AMHi, Id Rather Be Eatin Something Else:
I do believe it is already set as "fact" that the Planetoid in ALIEN and the one in PROMETHEUS are two diferent ones.
Cheers

The high winds and gusts as Dallas and his team approach the Derelict worked really well when showing up on their cameras, it really heightened the mystery and fear of the ship.
The rain when Bret went to look for Jones with the heavy black chains blended in perfectly with the acid dripping off the Xeno when he snatched him into the vents.

MemberOvomorphMay-12-2012 5:05 AMThe planetoid in Prometheus is LV-223, the one in Alien is LV-426.
It is fair enough to assume that they might be different planets, with different atmospheres and possibly different weather patterns.
In any case, the weather in Prometheus is interesting, because we see the events on its surface to happen in almost fine weather (except for that sand storm whose origins we don't know yet), while all the shots of the Prometheus approaching and entering the atmosphere show a planet totally covered with thick clouds, cyclones and lightning storms.
In the end it might be that they just land in a better area, or are just lucky with the weather.
Ridley Scott will eventually tell us how the Queen was born.
Right now we have the Deacon; coming soon the Mercury, the May and the Taylor.

MemberOvomorphMay-12-2012 11:27 AMSo it then makes me wonder if there are three planetoids/moons in orbit around the gas giant one is LV-426 the other is LV-223 what is the thirds designation?

MemberOvomorphOct-26-2012 5:22 AMWhy didn't Prometheus forecast the coming storm earlier ?
WE are used to seeing weather maps that show wide areas of the world,,and see any approaching storm..using various satellites...and ground based radar.
But our ship is in a valley..without any satellite aids,,with what seems to be rotating radar antenna..
The lack of earlier storm warning always a question in my mind..but a friend made the above observations, and it sort of made sense.
As far as why the storm occurs at this moment in the story I choose to believe that other Engineers somewhere on this moon..have been observing..and wanted to get rid of the human menace..by 'narural means'..
