Just read this on digitalspy.co.uk. . . http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/movies/news/a380327/ridley-scotts-prometheus-lands-r-rating.html Hopefully that means a 15 rating in the UK!

Well I hope it's a 15 at the minimum. I'm really hoping for an 18 certificate here in the UK. It's about time we had some decent sci-fi films for adults instead of the sanitised pap hollywood has produced for kids and teens in recent years. And yes that includes Avatar, the Star Wars prequels, Tron Legacy, etc, etc.

Just wanted to add that you don't need action and/or horror, or even spaceships or aliens or time machines (!!), as essential ingredients for an adult sci-fi film. Check out Jerome Bixby's The Man From Earth. This is an adult sci-fi film with no action sequences or horror, just incredibly thought-provoking ideas. It's just half a dozen people in a room talking. But I guarantee you will be amazed by how gripping it is and how it leaves you thinking about profound concepts afterwards. Highly recommended.

Yeah Avatar isn't even worth a mention in the same sentence as Prometheus! I think a 15 rating here would be ok, as I've seen some pretty scary/disturbing films with that rating in the cinema in the last year. But I suppose, with a R/15 rating, Prometheus won't have much impact on the box office considering it probably cost £200 odd million to make, uh oh!

They would make double, triple, and sometimes quadruple the amount of money out of fans that see it that many times in cinemas if it gets an R rating, you're right. Some people may even see it more times than that in cinemas. It's a once in a lifetime movie in my opinion and I know I'll remember the time I've spent here as well as the movie itself for the rest of my life, and I'm going to try and see it as many times at the cinema (depending how long it plays for in cinemas where I live,) as I can :-D

UK - Probably a 15 if they want bums on seats... 18 if they want us to take the film seriously. It's time we had a decent Sci-Fi/Horror movie for ADULTS who are capable of thinking UP to Sir Ridley's level. I'm so fed up with the dumbing down of everything these days, I need something that will challenge my conceptions of Life, the Universe and Everything, and I hope Prometheus will be just the movie to do this.

@Kronik - yeah, I have the same hopes for Prometheus. If the studio really stick by their word and pass Scott's vision uncut, then perhaps that will open the gates for some real grown-up sci-fi films in coming years. Makes me wonder if that isn't part of their game plan - using Prometheus to test the market for adult sci-fi. Their only problem is that there are so few directors working at Scott's level. That excludes Cameron and Lucas. Alfonso Cuaron is a director to watch - Children of Men was excellent. His new film, Gravity, has a very simple concept - two astronauts adrift in near-Earth space - but sometimes out of simple concepts great things are made. Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) and Neill Blomkamp (District 9) are two promising younger directors who might be able to deliver the (grown-up) goods. It's about time the Hollywood studios stopped underestimating the intelligence of their audiences.

Well I already plan to see it 3 times, so I'm contributing about £25 toward it's box office takings! Ha! :) Seeing it 1st June, that night, cannot wait! I think it'll get the 15 rating here though, which I'd be happy with! But if it's 12A, I don't think I'll bother. . .

These days it’s about the profit margin and not the demographic. I really do not think the studio cares who sees the movie as long as it gets seen. If a PG-13 gets you a younger clientele willing to shell out the cash then so be it. The board of directors wants return on the dollar – nothing else. Let’s face it RS has his following but that alone will not pay for this movie so the seats have to be filled on opening day and beyond. This summer offers some serious movies so the studio has to be competitive. I really don’t care what the rating is going to be because RS is going to put a good movie out there. The bonus is increased following, new followers for generations to come. Another bonus will also be spawning a sequel or two and maybe a shot in the arm for the Alien franchise.

R is such a broad sweeping rating - spanning anything from Saw to Sideways. You have to look somewhere like the UK with more classifications to get an idea of what kind of R youre going to get (18 or 15?) Fully expecting a '15' rated R - which I must say is a whole lot better than I was fearing a few weeks back. Looking forward to the NC-17 cut on the blu ray!
