Huge skull

Quote from wikipedia: "Our present society predominantly associates skulls with death and evil. However, to some ancient societies it is believed to have had the opposite association, where objects like crystal skulls represent "life": the honoring of humanity in the flesh and the embodiment of consciousness".
Perhaps this is what the skull is supposed to represent, since the SJs might be our creators.
What are your thoughts on this?

I've noticed this image is the nearest motif yet we've seen to
the classic elongated Alien cranium with the skull at the front
- as it is under the translucent cranium. It's obviously derivative
of Giger's designs for Dune and that is wonderful, because I'm wondering
if this may be one of the tenuous links to Alien. The aesthetic
definitely seems to lean towards the Alien beast.

Yes, really gigeresque, isn't it?
We discussed it some weeks ago...
Have you heard of phoenix asteroids?
They glow in every color of the rainbow...they travel endlessly through space...

I am wondering if the same skull is carved on the top of the 3 other temples further down the valley. To me, it represents some kind of divinity symbol. I think it is supposed to indicate the contents of the temple is sacred and to be handled lightly.

check out these images, this was some designs originally for the movie dune, but they look very relevant! http://www.prometheus-movie.com/community/forums/topic/436

Sorry about the sudden update on this subject but thought this new information sounded interesting...

Shawluv: yes I've heard rumors that Giger used a design similar to that of the temple in Prometheus... Wonder if this is the same design.

In the David promo there are skull-shapes in the background. During the interview when David is looking right into the screen and talking about what makes him sad, on either side of him are large skull shapes. Not sure if relevant, but interesting to note.

@SeattleWhispers: Perhaps... I'm sure we are going to see a whole lot of symbolism in this film.

Did anyone read the purpose of Gigers unused Domes in Dune...
"Harkonnen is a gigantic Moloch, which functions by converting living beings into energy. Every visitor is materially or spiritually exploited (as I was for this film project). Whoever enters the castle stays there for the rest of his life, which in any case can only last a few seconds. The belly of Harkonnen is a gigantic, senseless gothic, empty space in which corpulent beings swing through the abyss on their suspensors. The thin, plump external skin is supported from inside by a bone-like structure in the form of gigantic vertical plates. The egg in the desert, a symbol of fertility and reclusion - nothing but a fragile, empty sham."

Now the interesting think is the Dune unused Harkonnen converts matter to energy.....
Could that be whats behind the Urns? The Derelicts are Bio Mechanical and thus could they had been using a substance to convert organisms into a liquid like matter that can then be used as fuel?
Meaning the Urns act as a Battery?
Prometheus does not hint at that, just the Dune Concept which the Prometheus Temple seems to be based on does.
We do see in Prometheus that in those Urns could be the liquefied DNA of Xenos...

Thanks for Posting Shaw's sweet sweet baby. I really loved the skull and it was an interesting addition. Giger is such a thought provoking artist and I am thankful they included some of his design work.

Yeah, it's a DIRECT BORROW from Jodorowsky's earlier stab at Dune, from Giger's original design for the Harkonen castle - here it is.
