Yup......Saw the Sunday Telegraph magazine article about it coming out when I was 13 and got my dad to take me. He didn't understand that it was an "X" certificate at the time, and I looked older and am very tall.
I am "very" excited about the film but apprehensive as well.

I saw the original Alien in the cinema. The Observer Magazine published a colour article about the designs for the film, and being a sci-fi nerd I went. None of my friends wanted to see it so I went alone. It blew my mind. It was just so obviously a better film than nearly all the other sci-fi around at that time, and that includes Close Encounters and Star Wars. Only a few other films have had such a a profound impact on me at the cinema - A Clockwork Orange; The Man Who Fell to Earth; Blade Runner; Blue Velvet; The Matrix; V for Vendetta. So, yes, I'm very excited about Prometheus - a new sci-fi movie by Ridley Scott is about the only thing that will get me into the cinema these days (although I did go and see Avatar!).

Technically, ALIEN was originally released in 1979 (not trying to be a tight-ass). Yeah, I saw it in the cinema twice when I was 12 years old, then three other times over the years since. It made an impact, and it’s never left my mind since…
I’m looking forward to the new film with excitement…but also great cinematic trepidation.
Here’s to hoping!

I saw ALIEN at the Drive-in, first-run. I went in with no info or expectations and was blown away! It has remained my favorite movie ever since.
I am definitely looking forward to Prometheus, more so than any movie since Alien3. In fact, I already have Imax tickets ;)

While I understand you UK blokes get to see "Prometheus" a full week ahead of the US audience, outside of the film makers themselves--no one was viewing "ALIEN" in 1978, as it was not released until May 25th 1979. That being said-I had major difficulty seeing "ALIEN" at the theater, as I was only 11 years old. Having been turned away twice at the UA 150 in downtown Seattle because I was not 17 and my older brother did not count as a "legal guardian"--it was not until Thanksgiving eve that my parents (who did not want to see the film) gave personal express permission for me to see it at an outlet multi-plex. Despite being robbed of the 70mm 6 track Dolby experience--I was just happy to finally get to experience the film at all ! "ALIEN" is my second all-time favorite film and I don't see that changing anytime soon. I am very excited to view "Prometheus" at the cinema!

Saw it as soon as it was released in '79. I read the newspaper review which was good but I NEVER expected what I saw on the screen. RS's use of Giger's work made that a film unlike any other before. The first scene of the SJ was overwhelming to say the least. I can't imagine that or any other that followed to have been as mind blowing without Bio-Mech art.
I'm hoping Prometheus uses it in ways we can't even imagine.

eggchamber:
You got me there with "the man who fell..."
So, David Bowie is an Alien who comes to Earth in order to take water to his planet but stays and gets naughty, forgets his familly and planet and has the kicks by mistreating his human girlfriend.
I never understood that flick.
Please explain it to me friend.

I saw Watership Down in '78 & Alien in '79 when I was an itty bitty thing in grade school...
...and I'm still not sure which one scared the crap out of me more.

Watership Down is pretty scary for young kids. When the burrow starts collapsing... HORRIBLE.
Critical (LOL, NOT!) trivia about Watership Down.

sorry about the date thing guys. i tend to just watch the films and skip the trivia and tech stuff. i saw it at the same age as otto. so i was 8. i was a walk out from the chestburster and went back in for the scene with ash. was with mum and dad and my 18 year old cousin. it traumatised me for about a week. since then i have not looked back from my love of realistic sci fi. to tell you the truth i have not been so excited about a movie since Aliens followed up. i had a movie mag about aliens 6 months before it came out. it was the closest thing to this forum at the time and answered most questions. I read it that many times it fell to bits.

< hijack > Damn, Watership Down has its own wiki? That makes it an officially modern classic & culturally iconic film. < /hijack >
O.K. I admit Alien scared me a lot more. But both films left deep marks in different ways.

Yes, I was 7 years old at the time. Only now does it occur to me that this might not have been a responsible parenting decision...
