As reports confirm that The Avengers has banked a further $55 million this weekend (wow!), will Prometheus be able to knock it from the top spot???

Agreed Frantz But my point was - and I think I didnt get it across well - is that box office for Prometheus is important so we can get a sequel - if it flatlines at the box, we wont. Have to remember, Blade Runner was a massive flop upon its release - hopefully we wont have to wait decades for a Prometheus sequel - though Scott returning to Blade Runner universe is equally as mindblowing potentially as his work on Prometheus Agree with you too Wirrn - one thing I will say is that The Avengers was definately at the higher end of blockbuster entertainment - for those little kids who saw it at cinemas, it will be their Star Wars so I reckon it will be remembered

....I don't see how this is a Prometheus-related discussion, tbh... All your posts seem to be related to Prometheus financially... My answer: Who gives a shit.

no. not at all. Prometheus will make a good amount of money yes, we know that, but lets be honest here, this is no blockbuster, this is a hardcore r rated smart sci fi horror, how many of the general public do you really think will go see it?

By the time PROMETHEUS opens, AVENGERS will take in something like $15-17 million, just a simple projection.PROMETHEUS is dark & rated R would probably open around $50-60million, and this is the most optimistic prediction. If the movie opens around $20 million plus, the low end, it would be disappointing. I would hope it would open around $70 million and drop reasonably, gains traction through good word of mouth (the snake in the helmet scene would probably get the twitter buzzing like crazy) and ends up around $200 million plus. The last big budget gory, violent R-movie is 300 and it did around $200 million. The original ALIEN grossed about $250 million in today's dollars. I would want PROMETHEUS to gross close to $300 million in US/Canada, but that is just a wish

No. I don't even expect it to be. There are two reasons for this. Many people outside US from non-english speaking countries have no idea about aliens, so they have no clue how this movie is going to be. On the other hand, whole world knows heroes like thor, hulk, iron man and vilians like loki. That "knowing" factor is going to make such movies based on comics a hit, also it has moderate pace which helped this movie unlike battleship which is too fast for sci-fi lovers taste.
Uncertainty is the only certainty there is, and knowing how to live with insecurity is the only security.

@Prenihility who gives a shit? Well I am sure FOX and Ridley Scott give a shit! And how would the box office performance of Prometheus not be related to Prometheus! Be realistic! I want this film to succeed more than anyone - and for this to knock Avengers off the top spot means additional press and the potential sequel a sure thing. Luckily with Ridley Scott at the helm we have a seasoned film-maker who has made a sci-fi epic for about a 1/4 of most of the other blockbusters out there - so that means it probably doesnt even need to open at number 1 - a healthy $60/70 million opening (excluding the international take) would be enough to guarantee a sequel. Hopefully, film-goers will the tired of The Avengers by the time it opens! I am sorry if you were offended somehow by my question but this is a Hollywood picture and as much as we may not like it, it all comes down to money at the end of the day. I for one am hoping for an earth shattering take so we get to see more of this universe as Scott seems keen to return!

pfff even transformers rule at the box office ...of the first 10 movies all time 8 are for teens ...well lets say 8 and half ...some are not even good movies . Who si better Moon or Transformers ?? And the worse gained more than 10 times the best one .But we can be sure that all the pirate of carribeans and Harry potter will be forgotten in 50 years while people will still talk about alien and bladerunner .

There is one sad fact regarding general audiences: they go for movies that are based on good ideas, but are just retarded enough to be all things to all people. That extra bit of moronic/merely disinterested audience is what makes the studio heads always try to dumb down their movies - like that whole PG-13 crap idea for Prometheus, luckily abandoned by now. This is why popcorn movies will almost always beat art - even commercial art - at the box office. But these movies have short half-lives: all but forgotten a few months after the video release. And the other type of movies...they seldom get made, because they are too risky. Sometimes they do fail, even in execution. But at other times, they create Cults and Franchises - far less immediate money, but a lot more money in the long run. Avengers will probably have the better box office. But come on, who really wants to remember that movie? And no matter how Prometheus turns out quality-wise, it will surely be remembered far longer.

Sorry for not elaborating... I'm just tired of seeing threads that aren't actually discussing the content of the movie... Of course i want RS to succeed, and i want Prometheus to succeed. RS should definately be rewarded for all the effort and skill put into Prometheus. Adding to Wirrn's post: It will always be like that. I just think it's an extension of nature. Why do the vast majority of people listen to this commercialized pathetic excuse for music? Why do people KEEP buying Call of Duty videogames? It recquires a passion, an educated opinion, and intellectual capacity to understand things of high quality. It'll remain that way because not everyone has the brains to see the truth. There's no doubt, that Prometheus will 100% guaranteed be a better FILM than Avengers. It may not be as profitable, but looking at the criteria for making a quality movie, and what makes a good movie a good movie; Prometheus will be on top. Back to what i said earlier: It's sort of like natural selection; Instead of death; it's quality/truth :D. You have to give up something to achieve something. It will always be that way. And again, i apologize for coming off as an arse-clown with my blatant, out-right response... I just sometimes hate this world... More specifically the people in it, who have the attention span of a goldfish, and are not complex in any way, whatsoever...

@ OP, I would say no, because the avengers Is a mainstream blockbuster movie that Appeals to a much bigger spectrum Of audience than a horror scifi blockbuster Like prometheus might do. and btw, why do u care? is ur salary affected by the box office of prometheus??? @ Sky, you are dead wrong if you think The rest of the world would not know About aliens. Maybe in most african Countries they dont know because They dont have access to many movies, but in europe, asia and australia, The alien series is well known.

Do you know that Leonardo DiCaprio was planned staring in Prometheus before shooting , but he had contract obligations to other movie at the time ? Fox wanted him and Ridley too ... Now , no matter how this movie will look like , people would rush in cinemas when they hear that " Inception " and " TITANIC " star is in new R.S. sci-fi masterpiece ... Think about it ... Some things ( considering box-office ) would be different ...

Sky, you are so wrong." There are two reasons for this. Many people outside US from non-english speaking countries have no idea about aliens, so they have no clue how this movie is going to be.". Most of people in non english speaking countries have never heard about stupid comic heroes but are very familiar with alien. I don't give a shit about comic heroes . I'll not watch avengers even on my pc. I like only X-men animation and the firts two batman movies. Everything else connected with comics is a crap for me.

No. The genre and exposure is different. Not many people like horror though the film is factually considered sci fy the general public with view it as horror. Not even close to avengers number. That fil has a bigger draw . Robert Downey jr Sam Jackson Scarlett johanssan etc and more known characters cap America Thor iron man hulk etc. Unfair to compare

Are you kidding. Coors and Prometheus have just teamed up! So look out Hulk, look out Thor, Coors is on our side! Yeah! I mean, I had my doubts, but that Coors commercial was so cool and having a beer commercial just makes Prometheus more classy. Okay, I can't keep it in anymore, let the your bile out on me all you want, but, after avoiding it as much as I could, I just watched it for the first time and that friggin commercial is lame as hell. I am thinking less and less this is 2001 on steroids and just on steroids. Have faith. It's only a commercial. It's only a commercial. It's only a commercial.

I think some of you are underestimating the audience for this film. If it is a good film, with any sort of rave reviews that reference Ridley Scott history, people are going to come out of the woodwork to see it. The idea, of course, is that audiences are so used to half-baked concepts and crappy storytelling, that they are starved for something both intelligent and exciting, and more importantly, something new and iconic for this generation. Prometheus has the advantage of a tangent relationship to Alien, which helps market the film, but it's true strength with audiences will come from it's ability to provide a unique experience. If it truly does that, it will find the wider audience, become not just something like another superhero film, but something you "have" to see in the theater: an event film. We will know the answer in a few short weeks, when audiences start responding from the theaters. if it is good, people will find out in a hurry.
