Disturbing Trends as of late....

In the past few days, I have noticed a disturbing trend of members questioning the rights of others to comment on their opinions, ideas, posts, threads, etc..simply because of who they are, what they believe or that the OP's opinion was being questioned......This is, of course, entirely UNACCEPTABLE.... Also, there have been incidences of bullying and sarcastic instigation.... Now......Most of you know that we have a standard here of how we treat one another and we do our best to follow that standard and it is my hope that that continues.....In the spirit of fellowship and renewed attention to our conduct as a community, the following was added to the Forum Rules thread on the 18th of this month....It applies to everyone, staff included.... This thread is merely intended to ensure that the forum at large is aware of the staff's feelings and concerns on these matters and I will leave it open for three days to allow for comment before I lock it personally....Thank you for your time and participation in this community. craigamore Prometheus-movie.com’s Standard of Participation and Conduct - We members of Prometheus-movie.com take pride in our standard of a kind, welcoming atmosphere that applauds and fiercely defends passionate, mature discourse. - As a contractual obligation pursuant to membership with Prometheus-movie.com, each of us is expected to engage in intelligent discourse at an honest, civil and socially acceptable level. - Dislike of an idea, opinion or identity of belief is NEVER a license to insult the individual presenting it and will be dealt with in every instance. - Always attack the opinion rather than the individual giving it. Failure to do so displays only a lack of respect for fellow members and the forum itself - as well as an unwillingness to engage in civil, intelligent argument. - No one individual or group is in sole possession of a right to participate here. Any and all who follow the Forum Rules HAVE A RIGHT TO PARTICIPATE IN FREEDOM OF EXPESSION here at Prometheus-movie.com, no matter what that opinion may be; nor his or her political, religious, racial, ethnic or sexual identification/orientation. - As members of this community, while it is not mandatory, it is expected that we stand up for one another - in that while we may not always agree, we will ALWAYS respect one another and DEMAND each other’s right to his or her opinion so long as the expression of that opinion is, itself, respectful and maintains a common sense level of decency. - Immaturity only succeeds in revealing the attacker’s foolishness to the community at large. Remember, any willingness to make things personal loses one the argument before it is even made. -We are all here to passionately express and share our collective obsession concerning all things Alien and Prometheus…..let us all behave as though we respect and understand the merits of that purpose.

As someone who gets a bit "bent" by personal attacks, and also as someone who has to be careful not to do the same- I think this is long overdue but greatly appreciated. Movies may be intended to attract a certain demographic, but this forum proves that intention otherwise. We have multiple generations with differing opinions here, so some minor conflict is inevitable.

Great addition to the sites forum rules and charter! -abordoli (staff) P.S. If the above are being violated please REPORT the post so that we can promptly investigate (regardless of who is doing it).

I don't mind attacks on my opinions..that's all they are. But when I see people going after other people themselves, well that's different...I see the attacker as threatened, weak in their own self...and that's too bad..but inevitable I suppose. I'm glad for the rules, gotta catch myself sometimes because I wanna break em or at least bend em..but I got them in mind

This is a forum, here you will find trolls, snobs, hardcore fans and new people. But in my opinion there are people who call themselves "Hard core fans" but are really just a bunch of selfish people who are constantly making fun of the opinions of others using sarcasm in their attacks.

Well i think we can all have our own oppinions as long as we try and respect each other... i hope i dont come across badly if i comment on a post that someone is making and putting my point or sometimes pointing out they are wrong. I hope people dont think thats bad of me... such as when someone may start a thead and say sugest that say the Engineer could be say David 8 and i just post a comment to sugest its not and find some proof of why it is not. Or they they state that Weyland is only in the movie for 5 minutes. There is some stuff we dont have the answers yet, and i post my two cents but even if i dont agree with what others say on the matter, i dont come across as making their views not as valid as mine.... At least i hope not ;)

Well, sure there are people who carry around labels for other people, ready to whip them out, perhaps butting into conversations or responses that they aren't part of, but nevermind that...they just can't help but slap one of those titles on to an offender so everyone knows better... Problem is...everyone knows who has a pocket full of labels...except the person doing the labelling...they're too busy being busy to notice what they're doing....being selfish and DUMB

Labels are not attacks, are real. In the same way a cruel person attacks a Newbie (a person who is starting in the forums) and in the same way a person underestimates others and laughs at the views.

And I'm not harassing people, and I do not usually attack with acid sarcasm others' opinions...the rest are just jokes, for fun, that's all.

"common sense level of decency" I actually am glad Craigamore put this post up. I actually don't like to comment on half the things I'd like to because there is a lack of decency at times. I'm really ok with a bit of joking around but, yeah personal attacks and bullying are serious in my opinion and people should respect each other. It seems decency goes out the window whenever you go out in public, I'd like to think I can find more decency here where we have a common interest. In no way should you censor yourself if you are expressing yourself but one should stop and think when they are expressing an opinion if they are mad or just disagreeing with someone. Stopping and thinking can go a long way at times. We should all know the difference between disagreeing and being an A-Hole.

The anonymity on a board like this encourages this kind of uncivilly. It happens everywhere across the net, but LESS where it is not tolerated. I thank craigamore for writing this up in this way, because it's unambiguous what's expected of us as COMMUNITY MEMBERS—and our overt behavior. Even if it's really "who you are" to be a smart-alec in real life, please keep in mind that in real life, you actually know (face to face) the people you are behaving that way in front of. They can tell that something snide is intended for humorous effect and not directed at them personally. But, we DON’T know each other that way, so it's VERY easy to hurt someone else's feelings. The safest thing to do is to treat everyone like someone else's grandparent (until you do get to know them well *virtually*). Start with RESPECT and then go where your new friendships lead you. Nobody is perfect, but our behavior sure will be a lot closer to the IDEALS of this community if we at least try.

When you are at a job, at school, at church, at a grocery store, at a hospital......YOU ARE BEING WATCHED!!!! Your behavior, your attitude, your speech is typically being observed by someone and they are forming an impression about you. THIS site is no different. Your speech, through the words you choose to write before hitting reply, become a reflection of YOU. Try not to be your own worst enemy!

I haven't encountered anything as you described; if anything the only OP's some of us have questioned were the ones who decided to troll us with false imagery, such as that Predator dog I saw a day or two ago.....except that's a bit different; it was just some OP effing with us. Anyway, you'll get no argument from me about the rules you've stated in your opening post. The "Golden Rule" is something more people ought to consider in life, instead of being intimidating, bitter creeps. And just because this is the Internet doesn't mean you can always get away with anything.....such a phenomena is being studied. I forget the name of it; it has to do with "inhibition", including the inhibiting of personal feelings due to being an anonymous individual online, but it also has to do with how people feel that they "don't have to be responsible for what they post online," and such. The latter, concerning personal responsibility, is one that fascinates me, but since we're talking about taking other people's feelings into consideration in this thread, I'll stop my little lecture and say, again, that you'll get no argument from me concerning obeying the rules set forth by this site's staff and admins. EDIT/UPDATE Actually, in concern to "intimidating, bitter creeps", I will admit that over time due to personal things I've becoming increasingly bitter and sarcastic. Perhaps none of you have seen it, but that's because I repress it, knowing that carrying the burden of hatred is worse for me than it is for others who are somehow able to handle it and get what they want with it. Times like that in which I wish I didn't have a conscience, but that's just me. :
