May 23, 2012I don't think Shaw KNOWS anything. As much as the presumption of "it's an invitation"- she assumes many things. She is a person who has had faith for her entire life, and she begins to question not her faith- but what she has faith IN.
Faith or lack of it can be habitual. When you believe in God, and enjoy the benefit that comes with it, you may start to have great faith in any person's intentions. By the same token, if you have a poor experience with faith, that attitude bleeds over into many aspects of your life. I'm not saying it makes any sense one way or the other, I'm just saying it happens. Such habits are also why people lose or question their faith at some point. Make no mistake people, much of what the scientific community holds dear is as much based on faith as it is proof. Yes the proof is there (don't get up in arms yet!), but not always as much so as something like a video description for every scientific fact. Scientific fact is often times more like "connect the dots", with proven facts dispersed over a well thought out and quite plausible theory. We are all human, and do the best we have with what we got.
Both Shaw's and Holloway's characters are in the story for a reason. Both reside at extreme ends of the spectrum in their beliefs, and both are willing to risk everything to prove them. The twist is that they are a couple. Now that's just weird! Little Squiddy is gonna need counseling his whole life!
