MemberOvomorphMay-23-2012 1:32 PMNow that you bring it up...didn't they film in IMAX? Not sure, but isn't that a slightly different ratio? Anyone an expert on this sort of thing...just interested.

Some extra Information:
IMAX SPECS:
Some IMAX Info:
IMAX 70mm equates to theoretically 16k Digital resolution ... so RED Cameras @5k seems pretty far off ... some major DMR upscaling and cropping is done so it fits the IMAX screen ...
Current digital IMAX projectors have a tallest ratio of 1.78:1
D-IMAX ratio = 1.44:1
Some theatres have ratios of 1.85:1, with no masking. So anything that isn't in flat gets letterboxed
The native AR of digital iMax is the same as for all other DCI projectors - 1.89:1, that is, basically, a Flat AR.
An ratio of 4:3 is the more common aspect ratio for 15/70 IMAX films

Found this from Prometheus Cinematographer: Dariusz Wolski:
Dariusz Wolski had this to say about the Epic camera:
In my opinion, the new Red Epic camera is about to revolutionize all spectrums of the film industry.
I am going to use Epics in my new project directed by Ridley Scott. I am amazed with the quality of the image and the fact that you can shoot 5k at 120fps without compromising resolution, and most of all the size of the camera.
Combined with the Element Technica Atom 3d rig, we will be able to shoot a 3d movie with the flexibility of a conventional cinema camera.
I don’t see anything that comes close to it at the moment. I can’t even imagine the potential Epic will have on the big blockbuster industry as well as independent cinema.

What I would do to own this ... damn how things have changed eh? ... GO DIGITAL!!! :) ...

MemberOvomorphMay-23-2012 2:07 PMIt's that a camera or a fusion reactor? Talk about revolutionary!! Ridley is the man.

MemberOvomorphMay-23-2012 2:20 PMDigital itself was never the problem, whether it be in film or the music industry. We just had to figure out how to utilize it's capabilities properly, without corrupting it's potential benefits. By the way, does that thing make popcorn as well??

MemberOvomorphMay-23-2012 2:28 PMPlease tell me it won't be cropped in IMAX. This is my biggest concern. Recently had to make the decision between IMAX digital (ie not quite as good as BFI Imax at waterloo) and RealD at the local cinema and opted for IMAX digital. Fingers crossed I made the right decision!

MemberOvomorphMay-23-2012 2:42 PMWell Prometheus is being shot in 2.35:1 cinemascope, and IMAX films need to be cropped to 1.85:1 ...
So for IMAX you get a bigger picture and therefore, I would've thought, you would NOT get the WHOLE picture, being as it's getting cropped ... :/ ... I'm not 100% on this btw ... just guessing ...

MemberOvomorphMay-23-2012 2:54 PMdamn! I hope not. Of course at regular cinema you just get the blask bars at the side for a 1.85 move, hope it's the same...already got my ticket too!

MemberFacehuggerMay-23-2012 3:19 PMThe cropping is a concern of mine too. I'm trying to get a definitive answer to determine how to see it.

MemberOvomorphJun-05-2012 3:06 PMMy two cents...
Your best bet (if you want the best picture quality) would be to see the film in D-Cinema on an anamorphic sized screen. If you can't find a D-Cinema theater with that aspect ratio (which could be hard), find one with the largest screen possible.
D-Cinema will be as close to the Orig Camera Digital capture as possible. 35mm prints will suffer a generation loss, and may appear slightly more pixellated than the D-Cinema version.
In general, if it's shot in digital, you want to see it in a D-Cinema theater.
