I think it is at this point that I should go ahead and state a possibility for many of you. The majority of you may leave the theater disappointed because this film most likely cannot deliver the exposition necessary to explain all the mysteries we’ve been milling over the past month (who are the engineers, why did they make us, what is the function of the xenos, what are the cobra-aliens, what is the ooze, etc…) in the allotted time of the film. Ridley Scott recently said in an interview that this film will not be” a science lesson.” He has also said the film leaves room open for a sequel and, from the collection of scenes shown in the trailer and the early reviews, it seems like we may leave the theater knowing very little and with lots of questions still lingering in our minds.
In our rabid desire to support the film and soak in every little thing revealed through trailers and featurettes, we may have made this movie out to be something that is not. That is, by injecting importance into every scene and tidbit, we have made the film out to be a science fiction epic instead of a science fiction horror. There is a big difference between the two as Ridley has said that his main intention is to scare the sh*t out of us. Most likely, this will be a horror thrill ride with trappings of scientific depth and existentialism that serve to set the mood as opposed to form the backbone of the film. The meat and potatoes here will most likely be scares and slimy critters with an emphasis on tension and suspense.
From my time on the forums I have realized that I’ve built this movie up to be the end-all, be-all science fiction magnum opus that will tackle the issues of human creation, alien civilization, and the existential angst that comes with finding our place in the universe. This is, of course, ridiculous to expect from a film that is, at its core, a horror movie set in a science fiction universe. We most likely will never get any definitive answers about the Engineer’s culture, their Homeworld, their motivation for spawning life on earth, why they design creatures, and where they come from. The most likely outcome is that we will leave the cinema knowing only as much as the crew knows. And from what we’ve seen so far, it doesn’t look like the Engineers and the crew members are going to sit down for tea and crumpets to discuss the how and why of things at any point during the movie.

I'm thinking Prometheus will almost certainly suffer from 'Star Wars Syndrome'. This doesn't mean it will be crap like the new Star Wars trilogy was. SWS to me is an inevitable disappointment resulting from over zealous anticipation. One that can't possibly be satisfied because we've all given it far too much thought. The films that have the best impact, as with the original Alien, are the ones that people don't expect or have this kind of anticipation for.
AlainMay 28, 2012
I read somewhere that the quality of the film obeys the following law :
Quality=1/(Promotional Budget^10)
Hope this film will put an end to this assertion.
terminatusMay 26, 2012
I think that we should not concentrate on possible negatives the movie could have. If you go into the theater thinking or worrying that the movie is going to be bad, then it will most likely seem bad. I honestly hope I DO leave the theater with lots of questions still in my mind. Thats why we loved ALIEN so much in the first place. There needs to be an element of mystery that always remains in the ALIEN universe.

DrakeequationMay 26, 2012
To be fair, there is a big difference between Prometheus disappointing the people who have been building it up on the forums and it being a bad movie. If it is a great science fiction horror thrill ride most viewers and critics will love it. This is why I said that for us on the forums the movie will disappoint. For the average movie goer it may turn out to be amazing even if it doesn't answer the big questions.

RuthMay 26, 2012
Forget about disappointment, this movie is going to be amazing either way. Also, as I've always said, I don't need all things from a to z answered. I need more questions, more mystery and tension. I love when movies stuck in my head and I can use my imagination to explore them further. IMO, that is what makes movies good.

craigamoreMay 26, 2012
Agreed terminatus....I would NEVER want to leave a movie like this WITHOUT a slew of questions to keep my mental motor whirring....I prefer a lot things being left to mystery as the stories and films that most intelligently leave those questions behind are almost always the ones we agonize over in reverent imaginative thought, speculation and intense scrutiny..they're the MOST fun as well...

SaintsSinphonyMay 26, 2012
People that are thinking this movie could be a disappointment seem to want Prometheus to be the way they want it to be as opposed to just accepting the movie and not worrying if it fits into their ideas as canon, answers their questions, and/or want to see a classic alien.
The interesting part for me is seeing how the engineers and humans interact. I'm glad they don't sit down and the engineer explains themselves. Why should they even give us answers? I really hope no one makes it out alive and the engineer and whatever other creatures devour the whole Prometheus crew.
This movie looks great, and I'm hearing lots of buzz on the internet, tv, and even that ancient medium the radio. It's not just the marketing noise either, it's real people saying this film looks so interesting. I'm sure it will generate more questions but that is great. I don't want a predictable answer, I know the derelict is on LV 426, I know facehuggers make adult aliens and I know the queen lays eggs. I want a whole new extension of the universe and so do many others.
The recent article from the French mag “L'Écran Fantastique” (sorry if the name is wrong there) had some great stuff from the special effects team. If half these ideas are in the movie I think it's gonna come off great and look fantastic.
dodgerfanaticMay 26, 2012
yes , ridley scott doesnt disappoint , the first alien left us with mysteries and had most wondering with extreme inquisitiveness , that is the way of our species , to know that we will always have questions as the we explore the uncertain , i believe i will not be disappointed as long as i still have a curious wonder of what is out there ?

With whoever thinks that Leaving the Theatre with a lot of questions unanswered:
I AGREE!!!
I want to be intelletually aroused.
The only thing I would be disappointed would be with a bad plot; wich I have this feeling it´s gonna be just great.

I dont think about the negatives...why bother!
Wait til the movie is over before jumping into negative territory because any speculation at this point is irrelavent.

azalardMay 26, 2012
I agree with the topic creator. I think we've hyped this up by spending so much time speculating on this forum that we'll ultimately be disappointed when the real article is unraveled. It's human nature, and none of us can avoid that. If you sit around the Christmas tree trying to guess what's in each present, you're bound to be disappointed because some of your expectations will not be met.
Of course, we can sit here and BS with each other and say, "I think this film is going to rock no matter what!" But in reality, we've already set ourselves up for disappointment by talking about it day in and day out. RS may be a genius, and I'm sure I'll enjoy the film, but at this point I'm probably going to be more disappointed than I would have been had I never set foot on this website.

craigamoreMay 26, 2012
Drakeequation...I'm rather confused by the NEED expressed here to have 'definitive answers about the Engineer’s culture, their Homeworld, their motivation for spawning life on earth, why they design creatures, and where they come from' in order for Prometheus to be worth its salt....for us NOT to be dissappointed...
"Ridley has said that his main intention is to scare the sh*t out of us....it seems like we may leave the theater knowing very little and with lots of questions still lingering in our minds....THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT SCOTT AND LINDELOF INTEND FOR THIS TO BE....they have both said in numerous interviews that Prometheus is an EPIC, SCI-FI/HORROR film about the mysteries of our existense that WILL ANSWER SOME QUESTIONS AND GENERATE EVEN MORE......It is all of these things as they see it and until WE see the film, what's the point of pouting over what MAY or MAY NOT be the outcome of our viewing experience....
I don't get this....but please understand Drakeequation...my objection is not to you specifically, it's this idea I have a problem understanding...while I DO get where the trepidation comes from....I don't follow the logic of this complaint over what we DON'T even know for sure yet...

Craigamore, my post was more geared to people who, like myself, have put forth many theories about the Engineers and Xenos. For instance, there was a great deal of posts about why the first Engineer sacrifices himself. Unless there is some sort of narration or later explanation from an Engineer, the movie may just show us a flying saucer leaving and the Engineer drinking something mysterious that dissolves him. If there is no further explanation and that scene is left open to interpretation, I, and many people like myself, will be disappointed that we were given no answer after so much speculation. The disappointment will come in the form of having no concrete answers after speculating about the back-story to all the footage we were given in the trailers and featurettes. I sort of blame myself and also the marketing campaign which peaked about a month ago and then kept releasing more and more footage to try to keep the wave of hype going because it peaked too early.

wesenMay 26, 2012
I hope we don't learn anything about the engineers' homeworld and culture because it would become too fantazy-ish for me. I do, however, agree that by analyzing every bit we can spoil ourselves. Because maybe some of the things are just there because they look good and don't have a meaning at all ;)

Heeey.... its only a movie!
I really enjoyed the last month in following the "opening" of one hint after the other and i have never watched a movie trailer SO OFTEN like the prometheus trailers.
So to me the final visitation of the movie at cinema will be like a CLIMAX of this road... and WE HAVE BEEN THERE and in 20 years we can tell people (who may not be interested in this..hehe) that we were in prometheus on opening day, after the movie has been shown 542 times on television program each christmas ..haha
Enjoy and dont think so much... :-)
whiskuzMay 26, 2012
I'll never understand why so many people feel the need to inform us of how we're going feel after we see the movie. And they always have this tone reminiscent of the way teachers talk to their students. No disrespect meant to the op'er.
And this is not a horror movie! The whole point in going a different direction with respect to the choice of making a straight prequel or a film that takes place in the same universe was that he wanted there to be much larger questions and themes addressed. Alien was as small and focused as a movie can be. RS has said numerous times that Prometheus will deal with huge questions, but will scare the shit out of us as well. Horror movies don't deal with the origins of the human race and our place in the universe.
He's also said that a lot of questions will be answered, but new ones will be posed, which means we will leave the theater knowing more than we did when we walked in. Additionally, Damon recently said that a sequel would deal with a whole new world literally and figuratively, which is a pretty obvious admission that the SJ home world will be part of the story.

scifimoviepage.com is one of the negative critique about prometheus because they think addition of charlize and noomi is going to be like supermodels in alien movie. I think these old school thought people should need to rethink that we are in 2012, and not 1979 to expect the same crew member casts and crappy CGI for the prometheus.
I must say that timing for RS is good, he is making this prequel or the new mythology under CGI of high quality and also with the help of IMAX experience is going to be way different than crappy CGI in alien.

POOPMETHEUSMay 26, 2012
The' res a really good chance it might not live up to the hype... From what I've seen so far, it looks like any other movie being released. It might add to the original story line, but I doubt it will be as groundbreaking as the original ALIEN was.
SkyMay 26, 2012
considering the CGI, alien is not going to be groundbreaking for me. sorry but i am a guy born in the 80's and from what i see today in terms of CGI, i think prometheus will entertain me compared to alien.

SvanyaMay 26, 2012
I never hyped it up, I still am neutral and will remain so until I see the movie. One thing is sure, the visuals. music and actors are going to be fantastic so I don't really care if the story isn't great. Don't get me wrong I do want it to be awesome but I am realistic. :)
Some people here are treating the movie like the second coming of Christ, which usually means they have set expectations too high. People need to just relax and wait until they see the movie.

@ Sky Alien didn't have any CGI, but to counter attack what you said about being born in the 80s and not finding Alien entertaining, I was born in the early 90s and I still find Alien better and more entertaining than most of the crap that is released today. To a lot of people, CGI makes movies look fake, and it only works in films like the Avengers, and action films, not horror. That's why ridley has mentioned that he tried not to overuse the CGI and actually built some of the sets.

EGR101May 26, 2012
I think you may have to re-phrase your bold declarations: The movie will disappoint die-hard hardcore scifi fans who trawl the net for plot speculations and discussions like many in this forum for example. The movie may be a breath of fresh air to casual moviegoers who are not movie buffs but love movies all the same. I showed PROMETHEUS teaser, the very first one, to my pals, and their jaws kinda dropped: "What is this?" This is the very first minimalist teaser with that blaring horns. While I think Fox should use this teaser as the sole marketing campaign (along with the two excellent virals, David & Quiet Eye) to promote the movie, the various trailers and featurettes show tons of intriguing stuff even for hardcore scifi fans. For this who trawl the net for the latest teasers from 30 countries, watching the same bits of footage over and over again, you may have experienced sensorial fatigue. How many times have you seen that craft landing, lol? See, go radio silent from now till the premiere, I am telling you. WE HAVE ALL BEEN INFECTED !!!!
SkyMay 26, 2012
@Alexa, I do agree that these days sci-fi movies like transformer, AVP and battlefield type of fast pace CGI are making money. I do understand that pace wise Alien was okay. But I am looking forward to CGI as it is way better in prometheus compared to the other movies and also better than previous alien. One more point is that prometheus is one hell of long movie too. I am not sure why you think CGI in horror is not good because some of the movies are way better with CGI like say Grave encounters (2011), Silent Hill etc.

Well I haven't seen Prometheus yet and from what I have seen I know I will not be totally disappointed. I like mysteries and if they do answer a bunch of them in the last 8 minutes of the film...so what! So far we have seen lots of different aliens, cool spaceships and stuff, hot space babes, laser guns, alien worlds, explosions, people on fire, the Derelict and an android losing his head over ancient alien technology. There are some things that bug me though like: Aliens creating humans? I'm really more interested in what happens when Humans meet Aliens for the FIRST time! I am also annoyed by the Stoned Head and Statues. To me that's too much a human creation, advanced biomorphic aliens should have something that we wouldn't understand or recognize. I wonder how many temples with the human skull there are? I not that upset Really I guess the idea is that the ancient statue idol worshipers learned it from the Aliens???
Alexa431May 26, 2012
@Sky simply enough is that they don't have a scare factor. Even as an Alien fan I was pretty excited that prometheus was made to scare the hell out of people and not another film that Fox wanted to push through. While Im uncertain whether it will answer all of our questions or not, its irrelevant as long as its an amazing Scifi film.
ArkadineMay 26, 2012
Hey Drakeequation, maybe you are not familiar with the literature of H.P. Lovecraft, which precisely "tackle the issues of human creation, alien civilization, and the existential angst that comes with finding our place in the universe." Oh and I forgot to mention that his are horror stories with lots of "scares and slimy critters with an emphasis on tension and suspense". And most important, the explanations are always hinted at, and a great deal of the mystery remains in the shadows, making his ideas all the more thought provoking. Maybe you would prefer something like "Avatar", where everything is explained to you two or three times just in case.
SkyMay 26, 2012
@Alexa, the reason I like alien is not because of the actors or the alien creature but because there were many questions like space jockey and other related to the aliens remained unanswered. As long as I get in the same mystery mood in prometheus, I think it gets my money back..

Personally, I don't want all of my questions answered. And I'm not really looking for the end-all be-all of science fiction with this film. I would like a few answers, just enough to whet my appetite.
What I do very much want, and what I expect from this cast and director, is an edgy semi-thrill ride that's got a different look and atmosphere to it, much like the first film had way back in 1979.
I don't want a science lesson. I want to be entertained, and I want to find myself in the days after seeing the film, thinking about it, and asking even more questions. For me, many things in life, including the films I like, are more about the journey, than the destination.
I think this film will deliver.

Kronnang DunnMay 27, 2012
I think that the film may fail because lots of non sci-fi people will not understand it, Alien fans will complaint about the absence of Xenomorph elements and sci-fi fans won't get the whole same Alien universe not prequel idea.
