MemberOvomorphJun-10-2012 9:41 PMWith negative word of mouth dropping Prometheus' box office gross, and with Brave (Pixar films always do extremely well) and Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter just weeks away, I was wondering if you would still want a Prometheus sequel if the budget for the next film was much lower and the director was someone not well known. It seems like Prometheus is on track to earn only somewhat more than 2004's AVP which grossed 172 million worldwide but only cost 60 million to make (still made almost 3X its budget back). Prometheus also has a problem in that it may have had one of the biggest and most costly marketing campaigns in recent memory as the website, viral videos, trailers, constant tv spots, and even train station (yes they built a Prometheus train station advertisement at one point) must have cost a fortune. I know for AVP they recouped a lot of costs with toys, the DVD release, and the comics, so while they didn't make a huge profit, they went ahead with a sequel anyway. Unfortunately even if Prometheus does well with licensing deals and blu-ray/dvd sales, it may still fail to be truly profitable without breaking 400 million dollars worldwide at the box office (I'm talking the kind of profitable that gets a big-budget, big name director sequel). The sequel to AVP, as we all know, had a lower budget and much less competent directors. One could say it was done solely for the hardcore fans of AVP and was not really meant to be appreciated by general audiences. So as fans of the film, do you want a small budget sequel or would you rather they just leave the franchise alone if it fails to generate the cash a big-budget sequel requires?

MemberOvomorphJun-10-2012 9:49 PMWord of mouth dropping Prometheus' box office gross? Doubt it.
Prometheus 2 is on its way, its inevitable and it will be well funded and well produced. The viral marketing is even still going.

MemberOvomorphJun-10-2012 9:50 PMOuch. I'm hoping they saved money by secretly filming it in tandem with Prometheus, and it will be released 10.11.12 !!!!!
I think this film has trouble in that while on second viewing it is the type of film that really sucks you in, a lot of people will have walked out disappointed not to return, and to give bad reviews to others.
They shouldn't rush out a bad sequel. Even if our Weyland King director is getting closer to the grave... they could pass it on the the other King -" King of the World Ma!" James Cameron...
So long as the SCRIPT is good, and not full of huge glaring holes, I'll be happy with a sequel.

MemberOvomorphJun-10-2012 9:56 PM@Xenojon, I will point out that Prometheus got beat out by Madagascar 3 at the box office and suffered a massive drop in ticket sales over the weekend due to negative word of mouth. Many film analysts are now saying it will struggle to make back even double it's budget at this point which, by movie standards, is not a profitable film.

MemberOvomorphJun-10-2012 10:05 PMI am pretty sure 10.11.12 will be the release date of Prometheus on bluray lol.

MemberOvomorphJun-10-2012 10:09 PMScott says that he wants to do another one. I hope he does. I do to like the idea of a lower budget movie though.

MemberOvomorphJun-10-2012 10:14 PMi cant believe that people are seriously taking on the notion that some how two films have miraculously been made already and that the sequel will be announced on that date get a grip.

MemberOvomorphJun-10-2012 10:22 PMnot in some posts ive read not this one but in others there is a genuine belief this is the case.

MemberOvomorphJun-10-2012 10:23 PMThe internet has been buzzing about that 10.11.12 and some even think the sequel will be released on that date! lol I think it is the date of the bluray/dvd release.

MemberOvomorphJun-10-2012 10:47 PMGood thing "Prometheus" was released before "Dark Knight Rises" or it would've made even less.
"Madagascar 3" beat it by $10 million opening weekend!!!

Thats embarassing considering all the hype/marketing "Prometheus" got.
Sequel? Fox isn't going to bankroll any sequel for a movie that couldn't even be #1 its opening weekend.

MemberOvomorphJun-10-2012 10:54 PMI went to see the movie for the SECOND time tonight and on a sunday night the theater was packed. There are going to be a lot of people who hate this film, no doubt, but this film will do well with so many fans of the Alien franchise. My friends and I are in our 30's and we can't stop talking about it. There were some huge flaws with the movie, but the overall mind blowing ideas that were being thrown around were.......WOW.

MemberOvomorphJun-10-2012 11:01 PMI would like to see a sequel to Prometheus....despite the flaws I mentioned at length in my review, I still believe its worth having in the series and am far more fond of the ideas it presents then, say, Alien Ressurection. It had tremendous potential from everything I have seen, they just missed it.

MemberOvomorphJun-10-2012 11:05 PMSame here Spamcannon. I think people will talk about it whether they hated it or loved it. I see myself seeing it at lease one more time and I've seen it twice already.

MemberOvomorphJun-10-2012 11:08 PMYou know just checked box office mojo and avatar got 73 % of its overall takings in foreign receipts that's a huge chunk.
For a R rated film despite its flaws and split reviews Prometheus is on track to do well,
and summer family films are always going to have the upper hand against an R movie.
The avengers has done great as well because of the lower rating and its supposed to be a good film to boot.
I'm wondering if the dark night rises can live up to the success of its predecessor, the joker is always a huge draw for fans not so sure if this one will be as successful as a film, but maybe as a box office success its even money in relation to the previous batman. Time will tell.

MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 1:20 AMWow I can't believe how or why any Alien franchise fan would bash this movie. OF COURSE I want a sequel. This was an amazing film. Plot holes? This film was paced for the viewer, it had an epic quality thy couldn't be confined with small details and unneeded character development. So many people had wrong expectations of this film. I think Ridley delivered 100% and resurrected this franchise.
An amazing film! And definitely set up for a much anticipated sequel.

Yes people here are fans boy but that doesn't mean we have to like everything served up to us unconditionally

MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 1:48 AMI think many of you misunderstood my question. I meant would you still want a sequel if it was going to have a very small budget and be handed off to another director (not huge like Scott or Cameron but someone like Blomkamp).

MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 1:52 AMI really hope that Prometheus be profitable, or else I will feel a little disappointed. This film is designed to be a starting point (especially for the end) so it'll give you the benefit of the doubt before mourn :p

MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 2:19 AMHell yeah, I want to see the Engineer home world.
Director isn't terribly important to me. I place ability to tell a great/intriguing story over famous names. Renown is gravy.

Triedtolikeit
MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 8:21 AMPerhaps a lower budget might Resurrect the franchise; I doubt it though. If it were a stand-alone story, without too many references to extremely stupid story of this movie, there might be a chance something good would come out of it.
On the other hand, I'd rather see any budget go to something new. Prometheus was so, so bad, that I think it's highly unlikely that anything worthwhile will now be made. There are SO MANY great scifi stories that are now more worthy than anything ALIEN. Let's finally see ENDER's GAME made, for example.
So count me in as a NO. Let this thing die. I don't want to ever hear about ALIEN again - that's how bad Prometheus was.
I just can't believe anybody liked it at all.

MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 8:43 AM"Would you want a sequel under any circumstances?"
That was your question. The only sensible answer I can find, is: "No".
Quality counts for something - or it should.
I would love a sequel, [in the principle of Sequels: I find I could care less as far as Prometheus is concerned]: but not under the circumstances where the sequel is garbage.

MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 3:47 PMI wouldn't want a sequel if it didn't have the proper budget. A director that isn't a big name might work, but the money has to be there for it to be proper. I would hope it would look as good if not better than Prometheus.
The thing is, if there is a set direction to go I want it to go that way not have it get changed over once or twice or like Alien 3 and no one even knows what the F**k is going on then I don't want it to see the light of day.

MemberOvomorphJun-11-2012 3:50 PMBTW I didn't expect Prometheus to beat Madagascar, that would have been a miracle. I'm looking at the numbers compared to MIB 3 and the Avengers. I'm curious if Prometheus stays afloat for the next month.
Yes I like the film but I don't really know if the majority will.
