The pork thing is just a myth.........when you pour cola on an uncooked pork chop it reacts with traces of blood which oozes out and resembles worms.
There arnt ACTUALLY worms in pork.

@wesen
Interesting and did you know the Moray Eel has two sets of Jaws like the Xeno...

"Is it dead this time?" "I dunno, poke it with this stick and see."

OttoMay 28, 2012
@ Mark...dude...check out "trichinosis"...there CAN most certainly be worms in pork---more precisely cysts...that then hatch...and then go live in your muscle...

Don't forget the Chindra fish. This little guy is attracted to chemicals in urine and will swim upstream, lodging himself in the urethra using barbs. He must be surgically removed. There are certain bodies of water in which you should never urinate.
ArkadineMay 28, 2012
@ Star Beast of Cthulhu I remember watching that documentary... so fascinating... an organism who relies on two different other creatures to secure her progeny, using all types of sophisticated chemical techniques to deal with them... if you didn't know it's something that happens in the animal kingdom and you first saw it as part of a science fiction story, you would probably think it's too far fetched to be real :-)

OttoMay 27, 2012
keep in mind..the "worm" has visceral and innate terror to the human mind, probably because there are so man¥ "snake like" critters that like to make a meal out of us, or at least our "parts"...a little genetic programming that Ridley and company are taking advantage of.... ;)

there is also this cool parasite that attaches itself to the tongue of fish, or rather replaces it, the tongue eating louse:

I was, for a time, obsessed with Bott Fly larva videos on YouTube. LOL!

Think a minute about this Guinea worm, for instance. You get it if you drink water that contains water fleas, which have the larvae inside of them. When you digest the water flea, the larvae is released and the guinea worm develops in the muscles of the legs, reaching up to 3 feet long. When the critter has matured it makes an open sore in the leg that causes such a terrible itch that you feel compelled to submerge your feet in water, generally the same pond from which you got it in the first place, so it can release larvae and re-infect other hosts, who come to the same body of water to drink. Imagine the millions of years of evolution it takes for a creature like that to figure out its own way of self perpetuation. Most parasites target an specific type of host. Like the Xenomorphs with the humans... you could easily imagine some higher being ingeneering a lifeform to target exclusively people if they would like to exterminate them. Probably the Xenomorphs are interlaced with human dna.. that would be interesting, finding out that our worst nightmare is just us in a way :-)

Read about the tsetse fly...malaria...all "taking over" of our own body to our detriment...
Infection by other organisms, with efficiency, to survive...no regard to the host, other than to keep the host alive as long as possible for its own selfish means...

I think the idea of the Xenomorph was based on the Ichneumon Wasp

@Star Beast of Cthulhu; There was a wonderful thread about that subject awhile ago, about real lifecycles and such. I can't find the thread atm.

#5 was my first choice of the selection because, seriously, Jesus-titty-fucking-Christ! A brain worm?! I thought worms only invaded your intestines and ate whatever you ate, making you hungry again (tape worms).
Worse yet is that it seems easy to get; undercooked pork conceives this thing.....but even worse than that, it's communicable. Dx And so the Golden Rule of hygiene applies here : "Wash your hands."
Reminds me of a "brain-eating amoeba" I heard about a couple of years back (2007, to be precise). You can get it if you put your head in hot water, such as in a hot spring.
@wesen
Oh yeah; this website is where I first heard of the tongue-eating louse. Definitely disturbing, and since I have a rampant imagination, I can imagine how it must feel; imagine the feeling of biting your tongue, but hundreds or thousands of times the feeling. Oddly enough, the tongue-eating louse basically just replaces the fish's tongue. The fish can still eat and carry out its usual life....it's just that it picked up a "buddy" to replace its tongue.
As for their relationship to humans, currently there are no reports of them being a real threat to humans, though they can bite and supposedly it hurts.
I also saw a video of it on YouTube once. The ending was awesome. I won't spoil it; watch it.
PS : I apologize for my coarse language in my post here; the "brain worm" freaked me that much out.

Check out the show "Monsters Inside Me" on Animal Planet. All about parasites that attack humans stealthily. You'll learn more than you want to know but a very good show.
wesenMay 27, 2012
@crazydave thank god it doesn't really pose a threat to humans. I guess we don't swim in the sea all day and also don't have gills which it could enter through. Phew!!! But it is just so cool! I wonder what it does once it ate the tongue. Eat little bits of what the fish eats? ;)
thanks for the video. Before I heard of that thing I thought those parasitic wasps were the coolest parasite. Now I don't know anymore ;)
