The Rating Debate....

I know this has been discussed in many different ways but I just wanted to say, 'what is up with the moans and groans about the rating'...... I mean come on, there are some people who just want to see a great film, to them the rating is not important as long as the story and production are good, then there are others who just want to be shocked with gore and violence, now to me these people could not really care how good the story and film are as long as they are rewarded with a nice splattering of blood and over the top violence. To be honest a 15 certificate can still carry shocks, look at Saving Private Ryan, now this was close to the mark, Prometheus could well follow suit. Am I on to something here??? Roll on Sunday...... when I will be seeing in 3D.

I think the bigger issue is the tone of the movie. If Scott was trying to win over the "teen" crowd he will have watered down the content a great deal to appeal to them. This not just talking about blood and gore, but the seriousness of the dialogue, the complexity of the events, and the way in which the philosophical underpinnings of the film are presented.

but Drakeequation......all of what you describe, outside of blood and gore, the "seriousness of the dialogue, the complexity of the events, and the way in which the philosophical underpinnings of the film are presented" ...NONE OF THAT WOULD, IN ANY CASE HAVE ANY DISCERNABLE CONNECTION TO A RATING THAT WOULD GIVE AN AUDIENCE, ON RATING ALONE, ANY LOGICALLY TRUSTWORTHY ANSWER AS TO THOSE ISSUES OR THE OVERALL QUALITY OF THE FILM... What yasjooni is getting at is just how ridiculous, and I totally agree, all this worry about what letter and or number designation a ratings board slaps on a movie......I have said it countless times now and I will say it once again......Until you see the film, there is NO WAY to know whether it succeeds in what we as fans hope for it or not and to cast all of your hopes on that increasingly arbitrary letter and or number designation seems just as increasingly stupid.....

I am sure that the tone of the film will be very dark and at times probably harrowing, I think that film makers today are pushing the boundaries with censorship which can make a 15 certified film, (in the UK), a borderline on an 18 certificate, generally an R rating in the US would equate to an 18 certificate in the UK, I think there will still be some shocks in this film.

I'm glad its a 15, some 15's are pretty nasty anyway (The violence in Kick-Ass although comical was pretty graphic) and look at District 9 that had loads of messed up stuff in it an again 15. I think Prometheus is gonna be a pretty dark film by what the trailers give off, not expecting tons of gore or nothing just expect it to be a bit disturbing and intense, that would make me happy.

A 12a would of pissed me off a bit though. Just think the subject matter doesnt suit that age category. I mean come on we havent seen the full thing yet and when I went to see The Woman in Black some little kid (shouldnt of been there really a bit young) started hiding in his dads coat at the Prometheus trailer (watching the film that followed made him cry, poor sod)

Actually, the people who saw the film at the french screenings said the tone of the film felt like a movie geared towards the teenage crowd...

@Drakeequation hmmm... I dont know how that fits tbh. I'd say The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers is proper Teen focus. If Prometheus is on their level im not worried just now a bit anxious if that is true

horror movies usually target teens regardless of theatre sales they expect teens to be buying dvd's and using netflix or something of the like. Have you ever seen anyone get carded buying non porn dvd's?
