I'm fairly sure david tried to anger the engineer because he was bitter about his own simplistic creation and wanted the humans to suffer similarly. But its more than likely he was angered by the underwhelming greeting, the shit they were causing on the ship among other things. Who really knows tbh. He probably told him to 'try harder'
