In biology a few species of animals can reproduce with out a male. From the simple cell Amoebas all the way up to some types of snakes. Remember the problem on Jurasic Park. The velocirator eggs were hatching. Nature is a funny lady.

r.e. biological questions i'd be more concerned about how an organism can acquire so much biomass SO rapidly. (if it can with no apparent food store why does it need to bother eating..)
..but I prefer to enjoy the alien franchise without being pedantic :)

one of my theories is that alien can be considered a "super male". it can use anything as a female. doesn't even need a dedicated uterus, and can mix and match a lot of DNA to cross with it to take on local adaptations and get something to gestate.
it wasn't a regular human 'he' doing the fertilizing, rather the alien virus.

I haven't seen the movie yet, I must admit. If you identify it with a virus, then this is possible to. All viruses reproduce by injecting the host's cell with their RNA (RiboNucleaticAcid) and the RNA is able to cleave the host's DNA and insert itself into the host's DNA. And, the next time the cell divides a new virus is created. In biology viruses are not considered "alive" because one thing they can't do is reproduce themselves with out a host. That seems pretty fitting for the Xeno. And, actually the world has been experimentally treating some cellular diseases with viruses that inject a genetically modified RNA strand (done in a lab) to combat the cellular diseases. We might be able to wipe out cancer if it works. But, that is a whole new set of ethical questions.

the phrase that has been thrown around is "biomechanoid". so are these creatures actually biological? i dont believe we will ever get that answer. Maybe the creatures dont eat. i've never seen a xenomorph eat. I've conjectured on other feeds that maybe it is some sort of alien bio, nano tech and can use almost anything even to a microscopic level to reproduce and increase mass. that they are bio machines and need other forms of energy other than "food".

" I've never seen a xenomorph eat."[quote]
Well, if you listen to the verbal evidence given here, its' clear that aliens DO eat.

seriously though alien is clearly a predatory/parasitic organism .. getting its energy from victims.
Other than that the rapid alien mass increase is something I prefer to ignore :( its a plot hole in the original IMO - unless it has the ability to store energy very densely in the eggs. (instead of consuming food to grow, they get energy from the hosts).
