Note: This review has been marked "spoiler-free". Any spoilers posted will be removed (the entire post). -----------------------------------------------------------------I've been expecting/anticipating/salivating over this as much as anyone. Ever since the first teaser trailer with it's ghostly horned music to the slightly longer trailers... I'm sorry but WHAT WAS RIDLEY THINKING? Okay no spoilers from me, we obviously benefit from the first week of release in the UK : but there was so much missed potential. The cinematography and designs were incredible but there was zero mystique. Taking schlocky dialogue, insipid characters, dire music and no real tension, what has Ridley learnt from his first Alien outing? Back then the limitations were what drove it to be a character piece as much as it was an incredibly taut, dark adventure, you also cared about the characters, even Jonesy. The set designs were also outstanding and compact and claustrophobic. The atmosphere was palpable. So why 30 plus years later has he gone almost P.W Anderson? I swear it could have been directed by him. Aside from the incredible VFX / 3D (as good as it gets) - there's just no hook once the reveals are (fairly early on) established. Back to the 3D, again although amazing, it's ironic that whilst it makes you feel more immersed in the environment; Alien made me feel more immersed in the emotional content without the need for it. I rewatched Alien recently, while being over familiar with it, it stills tingles me and gets under my skin. Prometheus - you didn't scratch the surface. Big bag of boo's from me. :( Ridley, my dreams are quashed!

@fairplay32 Maybe the restrains of a limited budget help you being more "artistic". Generally very rich people tend to be more tacky than elegant :-)

hi fairplay32 I agree with your opinion. I'm really in a bit of shock. Having contributed to the forum and been looking forward to tonight. Still just my opinion. Interested how one or two of the people who liked it (good for you...genuinely happy for you) think there's is the only opinion in town and that a different OPINION means you didn't understand what they obviously did ....guessing they snuck in after school. For those who liked it, I wish I was one of you (Other than David8, the visual effects/ship and some good dialogue lines...I still like the bit in the clip from yesterday where Vickers confronts David....That to me was the most tense scene in the movie. Peace.

Has anyone seen RS' robin hood? It is similar in that it raises more questions then gives answers and is really more of a springboard for sequels. Everyone is allowed there opinion, but I wish people would enjoy what they complain so much about. I love movies that I leave asking people questions in the parking lot. If you don't like that sort of movie, go see avengers or some other flick that wraps it all up with a bow. Some people like to be teased, to enjoy the question(s) and sometimes even the frustration of not knowing. This is why some people loved/hated the last sopranos episode. For some reason some people need someone to hold their hand, lead them down the path, draw a picture of what is happening along the way, and then sit down at the end to explain in entirety what just happened with flashbacks or idiot bad guys explaining what you just saw. Some people enjoy their own thoughts and perspectives and ideas of what may or may not have happened. To me, this is the upper echelon of films. You start with disney flicks and cartoon movies, move on to low budget flicks, then mindless action, dirty comedies, etc. Then the remaining few that like to think on their own and not be told exactly what to think enjoy movies like this.

Well I work in movies and I actually know quite a few people who worked on Prometheus so I'm not slighting them. I just feel beyond some of the grandiose designs, it was pure rehash of some fairly low brow stuff thats been churned out in recent years. To me Alien set the bar in terms of what can be achieved, differently. I'm not expecting an Alien once over with a bigger budget. Not at all. But there was so much mystique in the discovery of the Space Jockey in that film - think back to it. I just feel Ridley's gone down a balls out route to explain it all. Further more I don't mind everything being revealed or answered; a film is good on its own merits for revealing as little or as much as it wants but as long as its done right. I just feel this wasn't so much the case. There were snippets of hope - the opening sequence with the waterfall was stunning. Small, intricate scenes with minimal dialogue gave it some feeling. I just can't stand one dimensional characters with cheesy one liners; there was too much of that, and to be honest I just thought "go get slaughtered then human fodder" I dont care. I want to care about characters and the build up. This wasn't the case.

Hey Sandman What's the deal with thinking that people who don't share your opinion on one specific film must be challenged in someway? That's kinda self righteous. We don't all like the same music and art and despite loving Alien / Blade Runner and films of all budgets...it's just an opinion. Why not share yours without running others down...leave that for religion. I would have loved to have loved this film...I took a truck load of people along. To me, it didn't deliver..period. Just my opinion.

I don't get all this talk about a sequel. If the movie doesn't do as well as anticipated (particularly among the hardcore fans) there probably won't be one. Why would the movie studio bank roll a sequel if it tanks?

How would you know if more people hate it than love it. The only negative comments I have heard are from people on this board. I highly doubt this movie wont make double what it cost to make at the very least. It's not an Alien movie...Fact! It's a stand alone movie...Fact! No movie is perfect...I have yet to see one that is! 20th century fox has the last word on anything Ridley may have wanted....remember that!

If they think a sequel will even make 1 penny they'll do it! look at the transformers franchise (shudders). I was left feeling a little let down and wanting more, sadly not in a good way.

Watched it last night in Birmingham. At the end everyone groaned. My friend called me this morning from London. At the end of the movie everyone laughed. I totally agree with FairPlay32. A very, very poor movie with absolutely no mystique. This film over hyped itself and simply did not deliver. Vickers was awful. Weyland unnecesary. dialogue extremely tacky. Music good in parts but awful in others. Effects generally great but some poor bits. David carried the movie too much. Extremely, extremely disappointed.
