MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 9:21 AMAt the beginning of the film we see the sacrificial Engineer drink the black goo which immediately breaks down his cells leading to the first elements of DNA for human life on earth.
Later on, when David spikes Holloway’s drink with a tiny amount of black goo, Holloway appears to follow the same pattern of cell breakdown as the sacrificial Engineer, only at a slower rate; presumably because he only ingested a small amount.
The inconsistency occurs when the mealworm bathes in the same black goo. This time, the goo mutates the worm into a "cobra-hugger". Also, when Fifield falls into the goo, he later returns as a super strong mutated version of himself.
So, why do we see very different results from interaction with the same black goo? I am, of course, assuming that all of the above characters and creatures have interacted with same substance. Or, maybe the goo needs to mix with another substance; or be at a certain temperature to produce a growth effect rather than a breakdown. Thoughts???

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 9:41 AMI was under the impression that the black goo at the start of the movie was designed for the engineer to ingest and create life on earth. So that black goo in particular was designed to make us from engineers.
The black goo later on was the same concept but different. It would create life but not human life. That black goo was for us to change into xeno territory. Almost as if we are stage one and facehugger/xeno would be stage two.
Viddy well, little brother. Viddy well.

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 10:01 AMI heard a theory that the black goo simply speeds up the process of evolution with the exception of the engineers, with the worms turning into 'cobra-huggers' and Fifield becoming a super strong, zombie like character.
but this makes no sense as Holloway began to breakdown as the sacrificial engineer did. Unless... the 'zombie' type stage comes after a longer period of time after coming into contact with the black goo from the state we saw Holloway in, if that makes sense?

Custodian
MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 10:01 AMthe scale of ENGINEERS and humans really puts paid to the WE'RE MADE FROM THEM argument, for me.
Also, if you can genetically modify POTATOES, why are they not called MEAT? You can genetically modify a sheep, and that's called meat.

MemberOvomorphJun-03-2012 10:57 AMit can be because the vases has a special function, kind of distillating the black goo, then it speeds up the prosess of evolution, but when drunk clean, like with the engineer an Holloway, the are destroyed. David looking at the urn/vase said it was sweating .
