Upon reflection...

I get that some are saying its a masterpiece etc, and I'm genuinely happy for you, jealous of you even, but I just don't agree. I won't go into all the details of WHY it just isn't a very good film, as plenty of others have done a very good job of detailing that for me. Although I will quickly say that plot holes, poor acting, awful dialogue, and just completely absurd and lazy storytelling in places all add to my general dismay.
But you know what, I could forgive all of that, and just put it down to a big budget summer blockbuster to be forgotten as quickly as it is digested (which, believe me, I have done), if it was even slightly scary.
This film is just not scary enough. Nay, at all.
Ok, astronauts from earth seek to make contact with a mysterious alien civilisation for the first time. They find the planet and clear evidence of said civilisation - now THAT'S scary. As much awe as it would create, I would be cacking my pants. Moving on... they meet beings from said civilisation, and they are EXTREMELY unfriendly. Now that's full on horror inducing and absolutely terrifying. THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN A SCARY FILM. If it was, I could almost forget its many flaws.
Please don't think I'm trying to be flippant or blaze here. I really want to love this film, and I haven't had my heart broken by it being a disappointment, I'm even going to see it again tomorrow with some friends. I just think this should have been excellent. It had so much going for it.
However, I am able to enjoy it for what it is. Popcorn. Big special effects, gorgeous visuals. Bit of gore. Switch your brain off Friday night stuff. I look forward to the Blu ray for sure.
But as for mind bending thought provoking science fiction? No. Not this time.
