Promethian Man
MemberOvomorphJun-04-2012 2:45 PMI'm frustrated that all the talk about Vickers outside the movie ( i.e. in interviews/promos, etc. ) is intended to convey the notion that Vickers is a Burke-esque 'company-man' ( woman in this case ), no good, evil doer. The film even goes to the length of having Vickers receive her 'comeuppance' at the end.
But, I do not think she is bad or evil at all. She just doesn't believe in the mission, doesn't want the infected to be brought aboard the ship, didn't want her father coming along along on this mission, and resents him for chasing his dream of meeting his maker and becoming immortal.
She is hard-nosed and by-the-book, but I feel those traits whould have better aided her character to emerge as the the true and unlikely hero of the film, ala Charlton Heston in Planet Of the Apes ( an unlikeable person, forced to become the defender of humanity when faced with the ultimate threat ).
I thought she was an interesting character, and would liked her to not have died so needlessly in order to serve the film's intent of showing her as bad...
